Saturday 23 October Chelsea  2 (Malouda 23, Kalou 81)  Wolves 0

A performance in a different world from the the second half against West Ham, tempered by poor decisions in the box at both ends.  Indeed, Chelsea and Cech in particular had somw very nervy moments until the second goal went in.  Doyler had some chances and stopped Van Damme from scoring in the first half, while Milijas and Jarvis both should have passed rather than doing there own thing.  Jones benefited immensely from having Milijas also in the midfield, but still gave the ball away too much.  Stephen Hunt came on at half time for the less than impressive van Damme, to be greeted with resounding boos and his presence on the left seemed to galvanise Jarvo on the right.  Tommy Docherty paraded at half time, getting a mixed reception from the Wolves fans for his contribution to our history.  The first Chelsea goal came with both centre backs going missing, relying on Dave Edwards to be back in the box to block Malouda, but to no avail.  Edwards had a box to box job, and had or made several chances.   Marcus was again oustanding including a one-on-one save against Drogba.   So Liverpool leap frog us in the table, and for 69 minutes we were bottom until Newcastle finally saw off West Ham.  Although Probert was the best ref we'd seen he still penalised Wolves more than Chelsea, including Boswinga who got a way with a lot and Cashley Cole who punched the ball awau with no booking.  Of course there had to be another cheating example from the Blues when Boswinga went down claiming a head injury but peeked through his fingers to see where the ref was, but, at least, even Drogba didn't dive.

WW report

Yes, Wolves failed to win for the eighth successive game in the Premier League, and yes they remain rooted in the relegation zone. But they will surely profit soon if they continue to perform as they did against reigning Premier League champions and current leaders Chelsea.
For long periods of the game the home side were frustrated by a hard working Molineux team but goals from Florant Malouda and substitute Salomon Kalou ended any hopes of a shock result.   Richard Stearman took the place of the injured Jody Craddock, Jelle Van Damme came into midfield for the unavailable Michael Mancienne and Nenad Milijaš make his first League start of the campaign as Mick McCarthy played Kevin Doyle as a lone striker with Steven Fletcher dropping down to the bench.  Wanderers kicked-off defending the end of Stamford Bridge that housed 1,500 of their supporters.  In the third minute Petr Cech punched behind a Stephen Ward cross for the first of three Wolves corners in the opening stages. From the third Christophe Berra's header was blocked by John Terry.  Nicolas Anelka's through ball was too strong for Didier Drogba to latch onto but it took a great save from Marcus Hahnemann to keep things level as he got his fingertips to a low angled drive from Jose Bosingwa.  Terry headed wide following a Drogba free-kick but the flag was up for offside anyway, then Cech made a comfortable save from Dave Edwards' header after a cross from Kevin Foley.  In the 23rd minute Cech made another save, this time after Van Damme had got a head to Matt Jarvis's cross from the right, but seconds later, against the run of play, Chelsea moved into the lead.  Anelka found Yury Zhirkov with a short pass in the area and the Russian's low cross was turned in by Malouda.   Anelka could have had a second three minutes later but he fired into the side netting from a good position to the right of goal.  Two shots from Milijaš in just over a minute were both taken by Cech, and then Stearman went into the book for a late challenge on Drogba to the left of the visitor's box.  Malouda's free-kick into the box was eventually cleared by Ward after Drogba and Branislav Ivanovic had tried to convert.  Bosingwa was wide with a low shot from 20-yards and then, after Terry had fouled Doyle just outside the Chelsea area, Edwards flicked the free-kick to Dave Jones whose volleyed centre was claimed by Cech. Doyle headed wide after a Jarvis centre and shortly before the break Hahnemann saved at the near post with his foot after Bosingwa had charged into the box.

Half-Time: Chelsea 1 Wolves 0

Stephen Hunt replaced Van Damme at the start of the second-half - a move not met with universal approval by the home support.  And the midfielder was soon in the thick of things with a diving header from Jarvis's corner that was cleared from in front of goal by Michael Essien.  Cech had to be alert to turn a snapshot from Doyle around the post whilst Hahnemann enjoyed a stroke of luck when Malouda's dangerous shot struck team-mate Essien and bounced harmlessly behind.  A header from Edwards, following yet another Jarvis centre, looped onto the roof of the net, and then Milijaš let fly from just outside the area but the ball went straight into the midriff of Cech.  There was another chance when Doyle got in a glancing header after a corner from Jones but, again, Cech was perfectly positioned to save. In between, two Chelsea substitutions, Kalou for Malouda and Paulo Ferreira for Bosingwa, Mikel was booked for a heavy challenge on Edwards.  It was a measure of the pressure Wolves were applying that Chelsea had everyone back to defend from Jones's 80th minute corner.  But a well worked move resulted in a second goal for the Londoners just a minute later. Essien, Kalou, Drogba and Essien, again, were all involved allowing Kalou to slide the ball past Hahnemann. The relief from home players and supporters alike was notable.  Chelsea made a final change with Josh McEachran taking the place of Zhirkov and, after Drogba had hit a25-yard free-kick straight to Hahnemann, Sylvan Ebanks-Blake and Fletcher were sent on for Doyle and Jarvis respectively.  Berra was booked for handling the ball in the final minute, and in stoppage time Hunt broke clear on the left and laid the ball in front of Ebanks-Blake who was flagged offside.  Wolves will play worse than this and win.

Saturday 16 October Wolves 1 West Ham 1 ko 3pm

a case of "I'm forever foaming at the mouth" after yesterday's second half. Danny Murphy was querying what went on in team talks - "ease up & let the Hammers take control" seemed to be the order of the day after a flowing exciting first half. Ho hum, and off to Chelski then. At least we're above Liverpool! Charles Ross ALOB editor and Bully were on MOTD2 tonight talking about the tackling "controversy". Some more referee errors too as Clattenburg gives a non-penalty to let West Ham equalise and denies them a clear winner. Justice perhaps.

Wolves 1 (Jarvis 10) West Ham 1 (Noble-pen 53)

It was a game of two halves at Molineux as the bottom two in the Premier League slugged it out with Wolves dominating the opening 45 minutes but only having a Matt Jarvis goal for their troubles, before West Ham hit back with a controversial penalty after the break as they took charge of affairs.

Dave Jones came in for the suspended Karl Henry as the only change to the home starting line up.  Wolves kicked-off attacking the South Bank end but their goal was under threat inside the first minute when Kieron Dyer took the ball to the by-line and hammered in a low cross that was cleared by Jody Craddock.  The veteran defender was wearing the captain's armband in the absence of Henry but he had to hand it over to Christophe Berra with just two minutes gone as he limped off after landing badly from an aerial challenge with Victor Obinna. Richard Stearman went on in his place.  Wolves began to play some excellent flowing football and after a move involving Kevin Doyle and Steven Fletcher, Dave Edwards shot hit a defender sending the ball just the wrong side of the post with Robert Green rooted to the spot.  From Jarvis's corner Green punched the ball out but only as far as Jones who got too far under the ball and volleyed high over the bar.  But the West Ham keeper wasn't so lucky in the tenth minute after another fine home build up. Doyle played a clever short pass to Fletcher who threaded the ball through to Jarvis in the West Ham box.  The winger's shot was blocked but he regained possession and found Jones on the 18-yard line. He in turn pushed the ball wide to Stephen Ward whose centre was punched out by Green but only as far as Jarvis who sent a cushioned volley back into the net.  After that mistake Green showed the other side of his game just a minute later with a brilliant save from Jones whose well placed shot was heading for the far corner after Jarvis had set up the chance.  From Jones's flag kick the ball was half cleared to Kevin Foley who hoisted a cross to Fletcher who headed into the heart of the six-yard box. Stearman raced in and looked certain to register his first goal of the season but Green made a superb block to deny the defender.  A header from Edwards looped over the angle after a run and cross from Jarvis, and then a kind bounce put Obinna in the clear but Stearman was quickly back to shield the ball as Marcus Hahnemann ran out to claim.  Another cross from Jarvis found Edwards whose shot was blocked and then Tal Ben Haim cleared at the near post as Foley's low cross looked destined for Fletcher. There was a scramble before ball was cleared after Jones had planted the corner into the heart of the box as The Hammers' goal led something of a charmed life.  In the 35th minute, Jarvis took a return pass off Fletcher and hit a cross from the right that curled into the side netting just wide of the post with Green flatfooted.   Just before the break a mistake by Manuel du Costa almost cost his side a second goal. Green rolled the ball out to him but he lost possession on the edge of the box to Doyle who fed Jarvis but his drive was (painfully) blocked by Daniel Gabbidon.

Half-Time Wolves 1 West Ham 0

The Hammers drew level seven minutes after the restart following a controversial penalty award by Mark Clattenburg. There didn't appear to be any danger as Foley tangled with Obinna just inside the left of the area.  But the Nigerian went down in what seemed a 'six of one half a dozen of the other' challenge and the referee pointed to the spot with Mark Noble ramming home the penalty.  Three minutes later another poor punch from Green, this time after a cross from Foley, fell to Jones whose low goalbound shot appeared to strike team-mate Doyle and bounce to safety.  But seconds later it was the Wolves goal that was lucky to survive as Freddie Piquionne broke clear on the left and lashed a shot that cannoned back off the crossbar.   Appeals for a Wolves penalty as Lars Jacobsen blocked a Jarvis cross were ignored, and then Stearman headed a yard wide following a cross from Jones.  Play was soon at the other end where Dyer jinked his way deep into the box and looked odds on to score. But Ward managed to boot clear from in front of goal and when the ball fell to Obinna his shot was deflected wide.  Midway through the half Jelle Van Damme replaced Fletcher and, after Hahnemann had saved a vicious drive from Obinna, the visitors substituted Dyer with Carlton Cole.  The one time Wolves loanee was soon in the thick of things beating two men as he ran into the area. But he then failed to get a proper touch as he tried to convert allowing Hahnemann to take the ball off his foot.  Deep into stoppage time, with virtually the last kick of an absorbing contest, Piquionne toe poked the ball past Hahnemann but the referee penalised and booked the striker for hands in controlling the cross.

Wolves' manager Mick McCarthy:

"We completely dominated the first half and should have been more in front to be honest. I knew West Ham would be better in the second half but I think they've been gifted a penalty.  "The two of them have come together and I think he [Obinna] is looking to go down. I think he [referee Mark Clattenburg] has bought it and it's probably indicative of the run we've been on that it was given against us.  "We've got off the five points and ended that losing run and sometimes you just have to wipe your gob and get on with it."

West Ham manager Avram Grant:

"We are very disappointed but we have many positives to take. We scored two goals, one of them was given and the other the referee decided wasn't a goal.
"Mark [Clattenburg] is a very good referee but he's also a human being. He made a mistake. It's not the first time this has happened to us this season. Of course it was a goal.  "We are improving a lot. We are working on the mental side of things and the character within in the team is getting better."

Saturday 2 October Wigan Wolves ko  12:45pm Live on Sky

Wigan Athletic 2 (Gomez65, Rodallego 85) Wolves 0

Capt Karl pushed Wolves down to bottom but one with a stupid attack on Gomez which brought him a well deserved red card. A weak push by Dave Edwards on N'Zogbia (after he was arguably fouled) gave them the lead as George couldn't leap high enough to divert the ball, and then Berra's attempted clearance going in off Rodellaga just about gave Wigan everything they needed. They could arguably have been down to 10 after a succession of fouls by Thomas, before he was hooked. Doyler tried in vain on his own, while Kevin Foley was far far better than against Villa, including our best attack and a clearance off the line, while Michael Mancienne had his best game for a long time, taking on Henry's role. Marcus was firm as ever as was Jody. Berra again poor, Wardy mixed, Dave Edwards not so sure defending, while Jarvo only had one or two chances to influence the game and lost the ball far too easily. George came on to reinforce the left while Bent and SEB were given 8 minutes to turn the game around. Subs again too little too late. Just not good enough, the Hammers look a challenge now and we'll have to get points off the top 4 or be bottom next month.

Two Wigan goals in the last third of the game shattered a Wolves team forced to play with ten men following the sending off of skipper Karl Henry after just 11 minutes. The defeat was the fourth in succession suffered by Wanderers. Wolves kicked-off defending the end of the ground that housed over 2,000 noisy travelling supporters. There was just one change with Michael Mancienne coming in for Dave Jones as Mick McCarthy opted for a 4-4-3 system.

Wolves manager Mick McCarthy said he had no complaints about Karl Henry's straight red card in the 11th minute of his team's 2-0 defeat at Wigan. Starting with the worst disciplinary record in the Premier League, Wolves' reputation was further dented by Henry's challenge on Jordi Gomez. McCarthy said: "I have no arguments with the sending-off, it was reckless. "Given that our reputation in recent weeks has been soured because of tackles it's disappointing."

Gomez grabbed the opener in the second half with a fine free-kick before Hugo Rodallega made sure of the points as Wigan picked up their first home win of the season. And Latics boss Roberto Martinez was left in no doubts about the severity of a challenge that caught Gomez late and spun him through the air. He said: "I just felt it was a broken leg. The excessive force and how reckless he was meant it was a real worry for us. Jordi was very, very fortunate to escape damage. After that I didn't want the sending off because in a way you become anxious with everyone expecting a win. "But the way we regrouped and found the solutions in the second half was very pleasing. It was a mature performance."

McCarthy said there was no malicious intent from Henry when making his mistimed challenge on Gomez: "He's not that way inclined, he doesn't kick people." Referring to his team in general, he added: "There's no problems with discipline and attitude at the club."

They witnessed a quite opening to the game in which Wolves did most of the pressing without unduly worrying home keeper Ali Al Habsi. But Wolves were left with a mountainous task after they were reduced to ten men with only 11 minutes gone when Henry was shown a straight red for a reckless challenge on Jordi Gomez. Gomez soon recovered and his 20-yard effort trickled harmlessly wide as the visitors adjusted to the reduction in their ranks. In the 19th minute Wolves were awarded a free-kick 25-yards out after Steve Gohouri's foul on Kevin Doyle. Steven Fletcher took the kick which wasn't far away with the ball striking the net support at the back of the goal. Franco Di Santo beat the offside trap in the box but his short cross was cut out by Mancienne before, at the other end, two Matt Jarvis corners were cleared by the Latics defence. A low centre from Charles N'Zogbia just eluded Di Santo but Wolves were giving as good as they got despite only having ten men and after Maynor Figueroa had fouled Kevin Foley to the right of the Wigan box, Jarvis floated in the free-kick which was too high for everyone. Most of Wigan's goal attempts were coming from distance and when Hugo Rodallega tried his luck from inside the 'D' his effort sailed high over the bar. Fletcher was harshly shown the yellow card for a high kick that caught Di Santo during a scramble in the Wigan area. A minute later Di Santo tried a shot inside the Wolves box that hit Jody Craddock and bounced out for a corner. N'Zogbia's corner was half cleared back to him and when he returned the ball into the box it went through the goalmouth and out dangerously close to the far post. Just before the break Hendry Thomas was booked for a late challenge on Dave Edwards.

Half-Time: Wigan 0 Wolves 0

Within seconds of the restart Marcus Hahnemann pulled off a terrific save to deny Gomez who latched onto Rodallega's pass and shot for goal from just 10-yards out. But the American keeper parried the ball and as it rolled towards the line Foley ran across to clear. Hahnemann then had more routine saves to make as Di Santo and then James McCarthy shot straight at him from positions just outside the box. Seven minutes into the half George Elokobi was sent on in place of Fletcher. Jarvis nearly broke through as he darted into the area but he was dispossessed by Emmerson Boyce as he was about to shoot. But in the 65th minute it was Wigan that took the lead after Edwards was penalised for a challenge on N'Zogbia on the 18-yard. Gomez curled the free-kick over the wall and into the net off the underside of the bar. Hopes of a repeat at the Wigan end after Gohouri had fouled Doyle some 30-yards out on the left, were dashed when Jarvis curled the free-kick wide of the far post. Hahnemann had to have his wits about him as Dianto struck a speculative volley from wide on the right - the keeper pushing the ball behind. In an attempt to salvage something from the game boss McCarthy sent on two strikers, Sylvan Ebanks-Blake and Marcus Bent, in place of Stephen Ward and Edwards for the closing minutes. Five minutes from time Wigan's hold on the three points grew stronger still as they moved into a two goal advantage. N'Zogbia pushed a short through pass into the area and as Christophe Berra tried to shepherd back to Hahnemann but Rodallega got a touch to help it into the net.
