40 Saturday 29th March 15:00 MK Dons v Wolves
rMK Dons 0 Wolverhampton Wanderers 1 McAlinden 81′ FT 90 +4 HT 0-0 MK Dons 0 Wolves 1 - match report and pictures http://www.expressandstar.com/sport/wolverhampton-wanderers-fc/2014/03/29/mk-dons-0-wolves-1-match-report/2222705/ Substitute Liam McAlinden was Wolves’ matchwinner against 10-man Milton Keynes to reward the record-breaking near 9,000 travelling following. McAlinden headed home Kevin McDonald’s cross in the 81st minute in a game of few chances to send Kenny Jackett’s League One leaders 10 points clear of third place with a game in hand after Leyton Orient’s 1-0 defeat at home to Bradford. In a poor game, substitute Sanmi Odelusi was sent off for two bookable offences, the latter of which prompted the free kick that led to the only goal. MK Dons set a new record attendance of 20,516 today, with 8,943 away supporters. Nouha Dicko’s shot that flew inches over in the 45th minute was Wolves’ best chance, while keeper Carl Ikeme made a superb save to deny Dean Bowditch’s curling free kick in the 57th minute as Dons made it five home games without scoring. Jackett made two changes to the side that beat Colchester 4-2 on Tuesday. Jack Price and Nouha Dicko returned to the starting line-up in place of Lee Evans and Leon Clarke, who both dropped to the bench, from where Bakary Sako was absent due to an injury to his right foot that has required several painkilling injections. There were amazing scenes of colour and noise as the lilac-shirted Wolves ran out to 8,857 visiting fans that packed behind one goal across two tiers and both corners. But they were left disappointed by a drab first half that barely got going and fell well short of the occasion. Wolves looked closest to scoring but chances were thin on the ground on a bobbly pitch that made passing football difficult at times. Michael Jacobs had the first opening in the 10th minute when he tried to pick his spot from 25 yards but curled it wide. A minute later came Dons’s only effort of the first half when Dean Bowditch spotted Carl Ikeme off his line and tried his luck with a dipping volley from 35 yards but the keeper was equal to it and made a smart diving catch. The game became extremely scrappy and clogged up in midfield with both teams giving the ball away and it made for a flat spectacle. Wolves had the better of it and tried to lift what was looking a dull afternoon through the lively James Henry in the 29th minute. The opening came after Dicko’s shot was blocked and Danny Batth helped the ball on, but keeper David Martin blocked and Henry was ruled offside anyway from point-blank range. Dicko had the best chance of the half in time added on but fired a deflected fierce left-foot drive inches over the bar after Henry intercepted Antony Kay’s pass and raced away before squaring via Jacobs. Thankfully, the second half started in livelier fashion and there were openings at both ends. Within seconds, Jacobs’s left-wing cross hit Dicko and flew straight at Martin. But Dons hit back and Dele Alli’s lob gave James Loveridge a sight of goal but Ikeme was equal to it, racing off his line to get a hand to the ball before Kevin McDonald cleared. There was a half chance as Batth headed from Henry’s free kick on 52 but Dons went much closer five minutes later when Ikeme made a superb save to his right to keep out Dean Bowditch’s curling free from 30 yards after Batth tripped Loveridge. Dons brought on Sanmi Odelusi for Matty Kennedy on 58 but perhaps a more significant one came three minutes later when Jacket made a double switch with the arrival of Liam McAlinden and Clarke for Price and Dicko. Clarke, looking hungry and playing deeper than his fellow striker, made his presence felt immediately as he won a corner following Dean Lewington’s last-ditch challenge. But Wolves continued to find chances hard to come by, with often the final ball poor. Wolves were given a helping hand in the 80th minute when Odelusi, who had been booked on 72 for a late challenge on Scott Golbourne, was sent off for sending the same player sprawling. From the resulting free kick taken by Henry, there was a huge scramble in the box and McAlinden had a shot blocked before it was cleared to McDonald on the right and from his centre, McAlinden guided home a header at the near post.
BBC Wolves moved six points clear at the top of League One after substitute Liam McAlinden's first league goal for the club gave them victory at MK Dons. Striker McAlinden headed in Kevin McDonald's cross a minute after Dons substitute Sanmi Odelusi was sent off for two s in two minutes. Michael Jacobs and Nouha Dicko also went close for Wolves, while Dons' Dean Bowditch saw a free-kick tipped wide. Defeat for the hosts left them three points off the play-off places. It was the Dons' fourth successive home defeat but Wolves, who were backed by more than 8,800 fans as a new record attendance was set at Stadium MK, now have daylight between themselves and the chasing pack. They are now six points ahead of second-placed Brentford, who were held 0-0 at Oldham, and 10 clear of Leyton Orient in third after they lost 1-0 at home to Bradford. Wolves had marginally the better openings of a cagey first half as Jacobs shot tamely at home keeper David Martin, who also tipped over a Dicko effort. Dicko went close again at the start of the second half, while at the other end striker Bowditch saw his free-kick pushed around the post by Wolves keeper Carl Ikeme. But the game swung in the visitors' favour when Odelusi, a 58th-minute substitute, was shown two yellow cards in quick succession for fouls on Scott Golbourne. And McAlinden, whose only previous senior Wolves goal came in a Johnstone's Paint Trophy tie against Walsall last August, made his side's numerical advantage count immediately when he nodded in to win it.
Liam McAlinden lowdown Cannock-born McAlinden, who has come through the Wolves academy, made his first-team debut at Molineux in a 2-1 home defeat by Burnley in April 2013.He joined Shrewsbury on loan in October last year and scored three times in nine appearances. MK Dons boss Karl Robinson told BBC Three Counties Radio:
"I thought the players' hunger, their fight, determination and bravery, in and out of possession, was tremendous. "These young players are getting tremendous experience; the future is certainly bright at MK Dons. "You've got to accept we've been beaten here by the best team in the league. I think it was a very fair and equal game today. "I think the players, young and old, gave everything they've got in their bodies and I don't think they could have done much more."
Wolves head coach Kenny Jackett told BBC WM:
"It was a terrific win here on a pitch that made it very difficult for both teams, we just had to find a way of winning. "I just think you need a variation in tactics, you can't just play one way. Our midfield players have scored goals this season so its worked for us. "The advantage for myself is I've been around these leagues for a long time. I've just spent three years in the Championship and before that three years in League
One. "Look forward positively is the important thing for us now. We're hoping that Bakary Sako and perhaps Matt Doherty will come back."

MK Dons boss Karl Robinson told BBC Three Counties Radio: "We've got to make this place a fortress again. We need to find that consistency, but how can you when you can't find consistency in your team [selection]? "I can't wait. I'm excited by the game and I know the players are. "I don't really care if Wolves win the title. They should win it. And they've got a really good guy in charge in Kenny Jackett. "They're such a great football club - but it's not for me to worry whether they go up."t 39 Tuesday 25th March 19:45 Wolves 4 Colchester United 2
rSKY BET LEAGUE ONE Venue: Molineux Date: Tuesday, 25 March Kick-off: 19:45 GMT Wolves 4 Colchester 2 - match report http://www.expressandstar.com/sport/wolverhampton-wanderers-fc/2014/03/25/wolves-4-colchester-2-match-report/ Wolves escaped a mighty scare to beat Colchester 4-2 in a real see-saw game at Molineux as Kenny Jackett’s side extended their lead over third place to seven points Michael Jacobs after 50 seconds, Dave Edwards (26) and James Henry (43) seemingly gave the home an unassailable platform. But Alex Gilbey (57) and David Wright (72) reduced the arrears before Freddie Sears hit the inside of the post to give them an unexpected scare, only for substitute Nouha Dicko to provide massive relief around Molineux with almost the last kick. Brentford’s 3-1 defeat at Rotherham and Leyton Orient’s 1-1 draw against Oldham were comforting sights as Wolves survived. The visitors turnaround came after Wolves enjoyed just about the most comfortable halves of the season as they coasted to a 3-0 lead at the interval. The ease in which they were allowed to attack Colchester and create chances almost at will was on a par with the first 45 minutes against Tranmere at home and Swindon away as just about every player seemed right at the top of their game. But the arrival of Clinton Morrison and Freddie Sears 10 minutes after the break inspired an unlikely turnaround which left Jackett’s side hanging on before substitute Dicko struck with almost the last kick. Head coach Jackett made one change to the side that won 2-0 at Sheffield United on Saturday, with the return of captain Sam Ricketts for injured right-back Matt Doherty. Wolves kicked off attacking the Stan Cullis Stand end and were in front with the first attack of the game after just 50 seconds. It was a similar goal to Saturday’s opener as Edwards ran in front of the keeper to deceive him as Jacobs swept in a cross that crept in at the far post. The move came when the inspired Scott Golbourne found James Henry from a throw-in and he passed it back to Jacobs, still out on the left wing. Lee Evans started and finished the next move as Wolves went within inches of doubling their lead in the eighth minute. Evans put through Jacobs whose shot was saved by keeper Sam Walker and Evans then sidefooted the rebound a foot over the unguarded goal. Colchester broke to force the next opening and Dominic Vose’s rising effort from 25 yards required Carl Ikeme to tip over, the chance coming after Kevin McDonald’s pass hit referee Andy Woolmer. Ten minutes later, Wolves made it 2-0 when Edwards ruthlessly punished a woeful backpass from Ryan Dickson, the midfielder rounding Walker before slotting left-footed into an empty net for his second successive goal. Leon Clarke then missed two fine chances with his head on 31 and 39 minutes as Wolves threatened to run riot. First he headed McDonald’s chip too close to Walker and the keeper smothered from point-blank range. Then he tried to pick his spot in the corner when Henry picked him out unmarked peeling off a defender six yards out only to see the ball drift wide with Walker at full stretch. Wolves were now in rampant mood and Jacobs showed blurring footwork to dance through on 40 and square to Clarke when he could have gone for goal only to see Tom Eastman get a toe in to clear. But the third goal Wolves were threatening with increasing menace duly arrived three minutes later when Henry tapped home into an empty net after Walker blocked Clarke’s shot when Jacobs sent him racing away in the inside right channel. There was still time for Edwards to slice wide after Henry crossed in the first-half time added on and Colchester were just relieved to hear the half-time whistle without further punishment. Wolves soon returned to the attack however, with first Jacobs firing wide from the edge of the box following a jinking run at speed on 51, then Edwards lobbing wide after McDonald’s chip sent him galloping through the middle. That was the last piece of action for Edwards, who was replaced by Jack Price on 53. Colchester made a double swap two minutes later with the arrival of veteran former Birmingham striker Clinton Morrison and Freddie Sears, for Jabo Ibehre and Craig Eastmond. And the changes seemed to have the desired effect as the Us pulled one back out of the blue. Vose had room to cross from the left and expertly picked out Gilbey to head past Ikeme from six yards out. The goal rattled Wolves and shook them from their fluency. And Colchester seized the initiative to grab a second goal when Wright stabbed into the roof of the net, beating Evans to Sears’ cross from the left. Wolves were suddenly panicking and Sears advanced from the right before unleashing a low drive that beat Ikeme but bounced off the inside of the far post Beeb

League One leaders Wolves are without right-back Matt Doherty for the visit of Colchester United. Colchester have never scored at Molineux in five visits dating back to March 1987 Doherty has picked up his second hamstring injury of the season. Colchester could give striker Freddie Sears a first start in three games. After returning from a hamstring injury, Sears helped to inspire the U's comeback from 2-0 down to claim a point in Saturday's 2-2 draw at home to Bristol City.

Man of the match James Henry’s cross gave Wolves a 16th-minute lead and was the Blades’ first conceded in nine games before the recalled Dave Edwards clinched it eight minutes after the break. Although Carl Ikeme made a superb save from Jose Baxter in the fourth minute, it ended up being as routine a win as they have had for a while, and a 20th clean sheet of the season. Wolves boss Kenny Jackett sprang a major surprise by making four changes to the side beaten 2-1 at Crawley on Tuesday. Out went captain Sam Ricketts, Jack Price, Bakary Sako and Nouha Dicko to be replaced by Matt Doherty, Lee Evans, Edwards and Leon Clarke.
But Wolves were quickly forced on the back foot by the in-form Blades as early as the fourth minute when Ikeme made a superb save to deny Baxter, flinging himself to his left to keep out the forward’s angled shot from the edge of the six-yard box from a loose ball after a cross dropped invitingly. Wolves settled down however but it was the home side who dominated possession, with the visitors’ cause not helped by an over-zealous referee who seemed to favour United. Michael Jacobs had Wolves’ first attempt on nine minutes but his left-foot drive lacked power and keeper Mark Howard made a falling save. Wolves took the lead following a passage of decent play, but just like Henry’s goal at Brentford, there was an element of good fortune about it. The run of Edwards did all the damage as Howard left it expecting him to change the direction of Henry’s cross, which instead dropped into the far corner of the net for his ninth goal of the season. United went on to have most of the possession but they failed to test Ikeme. Instead it was Wolves who went closest to another goal, Henry’s superb curling pacy shot hitting the inside of the post from 25 yards with Howard at full stretch in the 32nd minute. Eight minutes later, Henry was at it again with another shot but this time his angled effort wide. Wolves still had to be alert defensively however and Richard Stearman, who had another excellent game, headed John Brayford’s shot off the line when Ikeme was beaten seconds before half-time.
The visitors gave themselves the perfect start to the second half by scoring again. And this time there was no element of luck about it as they netted a stylish goal. Jacobs started it with a lovely crossfield ball from the left to Henry on the right and his left-footed cross was dummied by Evans and swept home by Edwards on the volley from 12 yards out. Wolves shored things up with the arrival of Price for Evans on the hour but the next change was enforced as the unlucky Doherty picked up an injury and was replaced by Ricketts on 74 minutes. Before that, on 66, United brought on the rangy Chris Porter for Baxter to change the angle of their attack, with a more direct route. But Wolves had little trouble containing the hosts, who seemed tired and short on ideas. And Jackett’s side saw the game out without further fuss to chalk up their 20th clean sheet of the season.
Beeb Much-changed Wolves returned to winning ways to end form team Sheffield United’s march at Bramall Lane. Wolves dampened Sheffield United's 125th anniversary celebrations to move closer to a return to the Championship. Carl Ikeme saved well from Blades' Stefan Scougall before James Henry's cross eluded team-mate Dave Edwards and United keeper Mark Howard to go in. Henry struck a post and at the other end Richard Stearman cleared off the line from John Brayford. And after the break Henry was central for Wolves' second, crossing for Edwards who this time got a touch. Jose Baxter fired into the side netting as Blades attempted to respond, but Leon Clarke squandered a chance to make it 3-0 when through one-on-one. The result, which ends an 11-game unbeaten run and a sequence of eight games without conceding for Nigel Clough's men, failed to completely take the edge off the party atmosphere at Bramall Lane, as the club marked their 125th birthday by parading more than 50 former players across the pitch before kick-off. But Wolves, themselves undefeated in 10 matches until a midweek loss to Crawley, guaranteed they will finish the weekend as League One leaders. Sheffield United will be without defenders Bob Harris and Matt Hill after both picked up injuries in Monday's 0-0 draw with Preston. The Blades, celebrating their 125th anniversary on Saturday, hope to welcome back full-back John Brayford. Wolves may be unchanged to meet a resurgent Blades side unbeaten in 11 games since losing at Crewe in January. Kenny Jackett's side are still top of League One despite picking up just one point from their last two matches.
While Wolves start the day still a point clear of second-placed Brentford, the Blades are 10 points adrift of the play-off places, but with a game in hand on sixth-placed Peterborough United. Blades boss Nigel Clough told BBC Radio Sheffield: "It's lovely to be part of such a special anniversary, especially going into it on the back of the form we have been in. When we have had big crowds over the last few months, the players have responded. If you'd have offered me finishing the season fifth from bottom on goal difference after we lost at Crewe, I would have taken it but now all of a sudden we're 10th in the league. I don't underestimate what we've achieved. We have to use the atmosphere that the crowd here creates and, going forward, our home form will be what dictates our success in the future." Wolves manager Kenny Jackett told BBC WM: "Everyone knows that the likes of Sheffield United and Bristol City wouldn't stay in the bottom four for too long and at some stage would get going. It's a very big game, when you see the size of the club and the potential. They played an FA Cup quarter-final two weeks ago and they got 30,000 there. They've got a very good manager in Nigel Clough. Sometimes things can happen with a change of management and new players coming in and, when it does get going, momentum can take over. "It was a particularly disappointing defeat for us at Crawley. The game passed us by and we lacked energy. But I genuinely feel this is a great game for now as both sides will attack."
League One's two form teams Sheffield United's 10-match winning run (which has taken them to 10th in the table - and the FA Cup semi-finals) came to an end with Monday night's goalless draw at Preston. Wolves clocked up a club record nine wins on the trot (all in League One), until being held 0-0 at home by Shrewsbury last Saturday, followed by Tuesday's 2-1 defeat at Crawley. Prior to Tuesday's defeat at Crawley, they had been on a 10-game unbeaten run, including nine straight victories.t 27 Tuesday 18th March 15:00 Crawley Town v Wolves rescheduled

Wolves 0 Shrewsbury Town 0 - match report http://www.expressandstar.com/sport/wolverhampton-wanderers-fc/2014/03/15/wolves-0-shrewsbury-town-0-match-report/ Wolves’ record-breaking nine-match winning run came to an end as they were frustrated by a stubborn Shrewsbury to draw 0-0 at Molineux.
Kenny Jackett’s side could have few complaints as they struggled to match their recent levels of performance and failed to force opposing keeper Joe Anyon into a serious save despite dominating. Brentford’s 1-0 win at Leyton Orient at lunchtime meant Wolves went into the game top on goal difference and they are now a point clear. James Henry fired straight at Anyon in first-half time added on and substitute Leon Clarke could only prod the ball straight at the keeper on 79. But it was a poor sum total of openings as Wolves couldn’t break down a well organised defence as they failed to score for the first time in 10 since the 1-0 defeat at Gillingham on January 3. Head coach Jackett made his first change in six games and it was an enforced one as captain Sam Ricketts failed to recover from a thigh strain in time. Ethan Ebanks-Landell won the race to replace him ahead of Matt Doherty, who remained on an unchanged bench. Wolves favourites Steve Bull, Andy Mutch, Andy Thompson and Robbie Dennison were paraded on the pitch before kick-off, but it was the appearance of Graham Turner, who managed both clubs to success that drew the biggest applause, and from both sets of fans.
Wolves enjoyed by far the most possession of a one-sided first half, but Shrewsbury had clearly done their homework and contained them with some ease. The visitors defended in numbers, getting plenty of men behind the ball when Wolves attacked. And, coupled with a less than turbo-charged home side who failed to scale the heights of their blistering first 45 minutes at Swindon, it made for a frustrating first 45 minutes for Wolves fans as their side toiled away in the early spring Molineux sunshine. Chances were extremely thin on the ground, with no clear-cut openings before half-time. Shrewsbury went closest, with Sam Foley forcing a falling save to his right from Carl Ikeme with a tame, left-foot shot in the second minute. James Henry, who was Wolves’ liveliest player in the opening period and showed most urgency, fired over from a shot on the turn in the eighth minute in their first attack. Shrewsbury briefly threatened again in the 16th minute when Joe Jacobson rose highest to Wolverhampton-born Miles Storey’s corner but could only head well over the bar. Wolves had to wait until the minute of time added on at the end of the half to test keeper Joe Anyon, and even then Henry’s fiercely-hit left-foot drive was straight at him. Both teams looked sharper for the break and Shrewsbury were first to threaten through Storey, who looked to lob Ikeme and had the keeper at full stretch to tip away on 46. Wolves returned fire and Scott Golbourne saw a sidefooted effort headed away from in front of the line by Connor Goldson after Anyon spilled Henry’s cross on 48. The home side however had a double scare on 54 when Joe Jacobson’s free kick was deflected wide then Tamika Mkandiwire’s header flashed inches wide from Storey’s corner. Ten minutes into the second half Wolves made a double substitution in a bid to find that elusive breakthrough with Leon Clarke and Matt Doherty replacing Henry and Ebanks-Landell. But the switch had little immediate effect as Wolves struggled to break down a determined Town rearguard. Two half chances fell to Sako, but the French winger dragged his first effort wide on an angled run from a loose ball after Jacobs tumbled, then he screwed wide after a lovely disguised pass from Jacobs inside the full-back. A third attempt from Sako, on 77, drifted wide from the edge of the box. Clarke had Wolves’ clearest chance two minutes later from McDonald’s dink over the top, but could only sidefoot straight at Anyon from point-blank range. Sako had two more half openings, seeing a fierce drive blocked by Connor Goldson on 87 from Richard Stearman’s pull back then rifling a rising right-footed effort a foot too high two minutes later. Wolves were inches away from a goal in the third of the three minutes’ time added on when Clarke and Dicko slid in for Doherty’s header across the face of goal. But it was the excellent Mkandiwire who got a foot to it first to clear the danger. That left Wolves settling for a point as their winning run came to an end but there could be few complaints on a day when they struggled to open up a very well organised defence.Beeb
League One leaders Wolves' club-record run of wins was ended by a goalless draw with struggling Shrewsbury. Wolves, who had won their last nine, made most of the first-half running, with James Henry forcing a smart save. After the break, Connor Goldson headed just wide for the Shrews, while nobody could connect to a number of dangerous Bakary Sako crosses for Wolves. The hosts came agonisingly close to a late winner, but Matt Doherty's header was cleared by a Shrewsbury defender. The visitors then immediately broke but Tom Eaves could only shoot straight into the arms of Carl Ikeme. Wolves have conceded just three goals in 12 games during 2014 and lost just once Despite their run of victories coming to an end, Wolves are a point ahead of Brentford - who beat third-placed Leyton Orient on Saturday - at the top of the table, while the draw leaves Shrewsbury four points adrift of safety. They came close to opening the deadlock against the run of play in the first half when Joe Jacobson headed over from a corner and Sam Foley fired high and wide. Most of Wolves' play came from wide areas, with neither Michael Jacobs or Ethan Ebanks-Landell able to get on the end of a teasing Henry cross. Ikeme made a great save after the break, keeping out a curling effort from Miles Storey. Wolves dominated the final 30 minutes and winger Sako was at the heart of most of their play, firing across goal for substitute Leon Clarke but the former Coventry front man could not reach the delivery. Wolves head coach Kenny Jackett told BBC WM: "Our finishing wasn't of our usual standard. We've been pretty ruthless of late. We had a lot of shots and didn't hit the target anywhere near enough. It's not necessarily an easy situation to continually keep winning. When we had the opportunities and the chances, it was very difficult. Overall we're disappointed. We always want to win and want to win your home games. We take our point, we move on, we try to get back to our clinical best." Shrewsbury Town manager Mike Jackson told BBC Radio Shropshire: "In the first half we did really well, and once we got to grips with the game and their system, we had some good spells and good counter attacks. We started running out of steam in the second half, and we rode our luck probably. But we've got to recover now. We've got a massive game on Tuesday." The French connection of Bakary Sako (eight minutes and 34) and Nouha Dicko (19) gave Wolves a 3-0 half-time advantage in the most focused, dominant and hungry 45 minutes of the season to date. But as good as their first-half was convincing, their second period was sloppy as Swindon took the game to Wolves, who struggled to maintain their standards. Substitute Leon Clarke restored their three-goal advantage deep in injury-time after Michael Smith (74) became the first player to score against them for 680 minutes At 1-0 James Henry drilled against the post but at 3-1, Wolves’ hearts were in their mouths as Jay McEveley back-headed against the angle of post and bar with Carl Ikeme beaten. But Wolves emerged victorious as they eclipsed their win record achieved in 1915, 1967, 1987 and 1988. Not surprisingly given their superb form, Wolves head coach Kenny Jackett named an unchanged side for the fifth game in a row. The seven subs were also the same as they were for Saturday’s 3-0 win at Walsall. Wolves kicked off and were first to threaten in the seventh minute when Henry darted into a gap between two defenders on the left side of the box and rifled a firm left-foot drive just wide. Within 60 seconds, Wolves broke the deadlock when Sako headed home from almost on the goalline from Henry’s fierce, swirling cross. Swindon appealed in vain for an offside flag to no avail. Wolves were devastating on the break and Swindon were left chasing shadows as the visitors produced their most focused, devastating 45 minutes of the season. But the Robins weren’t without their threats and Wolves’ back line had to be alert to their attacks, which they were. Keeper Carl Ikeme dived smartly to his right to tip away Alex Pritchard’s left-foot drive at his near post in the 11th minute. There was no let-up from Wolves however with Henry, Michael Jacobs, Sako and Dicko in such ruthless form. Henry was next to try his luck, taking a touch from an unselfish pass from Dicko before lashing onto the near post from six yards out in the 18th minute. But within seconds Dicko showed the way after Sako’s superb pass split the defence and beat the offside trap for his fellow Frenchman to turn inside a defender before burying a shot past keeper Tyrell Bedford from just inside the box. Swindon threatened again when Danny Batth just did enough to put off Michael Smith from point-blank range following Nathan Byrne’s cross on 20. Wolves were forced to sit tight before breaking again in devastating fashion 11 minutes before the break. This time Jacobs split the defence to send Sako powering through the middle and the winger drew Belford before sidefooting home for his 12th goal of the season. Sam Ricketts almost got his first goal in Wolves colours on the stroke of half-time when he raced onto Dicko’s square pass across the box but lifted his shot a foot over the bar. Swindon, who brought all three substitutes on between half-time and the 57th minute, saw one of them, Louis Thompson, fire across the face of goal. A rising, angled drive from Kevin McDonald went the same way before Massimo Luongo leant back and lifted a shot well over. Wolves were content to sit back and soak up the pressure as Swindon enjoyed much of the possession. There was a brief flashpoint in the 68th minute when Dicko reacted to a late challenge from Raphael Rossi-Branco by shoving the defender in the chest and the Swindon man fell dramatically to the ground holding his face. Dicko was booked for his troubles as referee Lee Collins showed some common sense. Some uncharacteristic sloppy Wolves defending allowed Swindon a reply and when the ball was played deep into the box, Smith turned Batth too easily and he fired past Ikeme. Jackett brought on Dave Edwards for Henry on 76 and Clarke for Dicko five minutes later to give the chance of resting some weary legs. Wolves found it increasingly difficult to return to the levels of their first-half performance and Jay McEveley gave them a heart-stopping moment when his back header bounced against the angle of post and bar on 86 before Clarke netted from an acute angle with his left foot with almost the last kick of the game.
Wolves achieved their place in history last night, but the moment wasn’t as unblemished as their winning record. By Tim Nash http://www.expressandstar.com/sport/wolverhampton-wanderers-fc/2014/03/12/wolves-secure-their-place-in-history-match-analysis-and-pictures/
The opening 45 minutes were so good that if Carlsberg did first halves...you know the rest.
A breathtaking display and scintillating football ensured they were three goals to the good and a ninth straight win for the first time in the club’s history was assured. The French connection of Bakary Sako and Nouha Dicko gave Wolves a 3-0 half-time advantage in the most focused, dominant and hungry 45 minutes of the season to date. But then Wolves took their foot off the pedal and allowed Swindon back into the game in what head coach Kenny Jackett admitted was perhaps their worst 45 minutes under him. Leon Clarke got off the mark against his old club with a classy fourth goal to restore their three-goal cushion at the death. But there was a flatness in the second-half display which led to a first goal conceded in 680 minutes after six consecutive clean sheets. It was also disappointing to see the frustrations of the players who had done so much to put this game to bed – Sako and Dicko – with the doubtful antics of Brazilian defender Raphael Rossi-Franco. Dicko was booked for pushing him and Sako escaped punishment when Rossi-Franco accused him of spitting at him. It would be sad, however, if Wolves’ place in the record books was remembered only for those events, especially as the superb football that seems likely to carry them back to the Championship is such a delight to watch.
Wolves threatened in the seventh minute when James Henry darted into a gap between two defenders on the left side of the box and rifled a firm left-foot drive just wide. Within 60 seconds, the visitors broke the deadlock when Sako headed home from Henry’s fierce, swirling cross. Wolves were devastating on the break and Swindon were left chasing shadows. But the Robins weren’t without a threat and Wolves’ back line had to be alert to their attacks. Keeper Carl Ikeme dived smartly to his right to tip away Alex Pritchard’s left-foot drive at his near post in the 11th minute. There was no let-up from Wolves, however, with Henry, Michael Jacobs, Sako and Dicko in such ruthless form. In the 18th minute, Dicko showed the way after Sako’s superb pass split the defence and beat the offside trap for his fellow Frenchman to turn inside a defender before burying a shot past keeper Tyrell Bedford . Swindon threatened when Danny Batth just did enough to put off Michael Smith at point-blank range following Nathan Byrne’s cross. Wolves were forced to sit tight but broke again in devastating fashion 11 minutes before the interval. This time Jacobs split the defence to send Sako powering through the middle and the winger drew Belford before sidefooting home his 12th goal of the season. Some uncharacteristic sloppy Wolves defending allowed Swindon a reply and Smith turned Batth too easily to fire past Ikeme on 74 minutes. Jay McEveley gave them a heart-stopping moment when his back-header bounced against the angle of post and bar four minutes from time. But Clarke’s goal from an acute angle with almost the last kick of the game ended any thoughts of a revival. It sealed Wolves’ place in history but their second-half performance and wins for Leyton Orient, Brentford and Rotherham means there’s no room for complacency.

Swindon will assess the fitness of Nathan Thompson before kick-off. The defender was forced off late on in Saturday's defeat by MK Dons after injuring his groin and manager Mark Cooper admits he is a doubt. Wolves have no fresh injury worries as they bid for a club record ninth successive league win. Striker Leon Clarke returned from a heel injury as a late substitute in Saturday's win at Walsall and may again have to settle for a spot on the bench.

Nouha Dicko bagged a brace and Bakary Sako scored a wonderful free-kick as Wolves won the Black Country derby with Walsall.
Dicko opened the scoring just past the half hour mark when he poked home James Henry’s cross and doubled the advantage early in the second half after another Henry cross had hit the woodwork. Sako got the third when he curled a 25 yard free-kick past home keeper Richard O’Donnell. Walsall’s best chance fell to Febian Brandy but he headed straight at Carl Ikeme from six yards out. Victory at the Banks’s Stadium equalled a club record as Wolves picked up their eighth win in a row, while they kept a sixth straight clean sheet – which equals their best run since February 1992. But they were made to work far harder for it than the scoreline suggests, by a spirited Saddlers. In reality the game was decided the visitors clinical finishing. While Wolves were unchanged for the fourth straight game, Saddlers boss Dean Smith sprang something of a surprise in his starting line-up with three changes. Paul Downing, Craig Westcarr and Mal Benning were all on the bench, with James Chambers, Troy Hewitt and fit again Andy Taylor coming in. The Saddlers made a bright with Romaine Sawyers seeing a shot from distance deflected into the arms of Ikeme, while Milan Lalkovic fired well over the bar from a similar range. But the first attempt on target came from Wolves in the 20th minute, when O’Donnell did superbly to tip behind a Jacobs shot after the midfielder had met Sako’s cross. With the game beginning to liven up, Hewitt has a drive blocked by Sam Ricketts, while at the other end James Henry poked wide after Sawyers had been guilty of losing possession. Brandy was looking the Saddlers best attacking threat and sent a shot just wide from the edge of the box after seizing on a loose ball. But it was Wolves who grabbed the lead just past the half hour. The goal owed much to two excellent touches from Jacobs before he set Henry away down the left, who crossed for Dicko to poke home after the striker had got in front of Saddlers skipper Andy Butler. Walsall looked to hit back and after Lalkovic had sent a free-kick wide, Hewitt came within inches of levelling with an audacious shot which flew just wide of the far post. In first half stoppage Brandy cut inside Golbourne but his hurried shot was straight at Ikeme. Nicky Featherstone tested Ikeme early in the second period, while Dicko shot wide after getting away from Butler. Just seconds later he was celebrating a second goal as Wolves doubled their lead. Henry’s cross from the right was overhit and off target but the ball sailed over O’Donnell before clattering into the bar, then post, before being hit home from two yards out by a grateful and no doubt surprised Dicko. It looked a long way back for Walsall but they did threaten through Hewitt, who fired straight at Ikeme after turning Batth, while Brandy headed straight at the keeper after meeting a Lalkovic cross. He repeated the trick soon after but from a far better position after Featherstone’s perfectly placed inswinger found him six yards out. Midway through the half, Sako showed him how to finish to kill the game as a contest. Wolves were handed a free-kick 25 yards from goal when Taylor was penalised for blocking off Henry and the Mali international sent a superb effort into the bottom corner past a diving O’Donnell. Smith introduced Craig Westcarr and Michael Ngoo as the Saddlers looked for a consolation. The latter forced Ikeme into a save with a shot from outside the box and Westcarr drilled a free-kick into the wall.
BBC http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/26395620 Wolves kept their League One automatic promotion challenge on course and recorded a club-record equalling eighth straight win by beating Walsall. Nouah Dicko first turned in from close range after converting James Henry's cross, following nice interplay from James Price and Michael Jacobs. Walsall's Troy Hewitt then fired just wide from 20 yards before Dicko helped to scramble home a second. Bakary Sako secured the three points with a fine left-footed free-kick.
The win marks Wolves' third 3-0 victory in a row and means they have now not conceded in six consecutive League One games. It was no more than the visitors deserved, as Walsall struggled to create a clear chance against the leaders. Wolves had nearly gone ahead after 20 minutes when Sako cut in and fired in a stinging effort, which Walsall's Richard O'Donnell tipped over. But the hosts failed to impose themselves on the match following Wolves' first goal, with the result leaving the Saddlers struggling to keep up their challenge for a play-off spot.

Walsall have left-back Andy Taylor in contention to return for the visit of Wolves following a back injury which has kept him out since January. Midfielder Sam Mantom serves the second game of a three-match ban for the Saddlers, who are without a win in six. Striker Leon Clarke could return for League One leaders Wolves after three games out with a heel injury. But he may have to settle for a place on the bench, with Wolves having won seven successive matches.
Walsall manager Dean Smith told BBC WM: "We're really looking forward to it, it should be a great occasion but we know how tough it's going to be with the run that Wolves are on. We're definitely the underdogs, especially in terms of recent results but we'll take a lot of heart from the performances we've put in recently. We've played well against Wolves twice. We played really well in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy and unfortunately went out on penalties, and we put in a terrific performance and deserved to win 1-0 in the league. For us to have the opportunity to do the double over a club the size and the stature of Wolves is fantastic and will certainly give our supporters a lot of bragging rights."
Wolves head coach Kenny Jackett told BBC WM: "We've had excellent games against Walsall this season. I have a lot of respect for Dean Smith and Richard O'Kelly, they've done an excellent job at Walsall and will be battling themselves to try and get into that sixth spot. They play good football, they bring players through and bring players on who have been released by other clubs and work well at developing them. We know the game will have a derby feel and there will be a terrific atmosphere on the day. We will have to rise to the challenge because Walsall will be a big challenge for us."t 34 Saturday 1st March 15:00 Wolves v Port Vale

SKY BET LEAGUE ONE Venue: Molineux Date: Saturday, 1 March Kick-off: 15:00 GMT Wolves 3 Port Vale 0 - match report http://www.expressandstar.com/sport/wolverhampton-wanderers-fc/2014/03/01/wolves-3-port-vale-0-match-report/ Wolves went top of League One as they made it a magnificent seven wins in a row against Port Vale – and they owed it to their French connection. Bakary Sako (51) capped his first call-up by Mali yesterday with his ninth goal of the season before fellow Frenchman Nouha Dicko bagged a double inside three minutes on 73 and 75 minutes. Dicko also missed the chance of a hat-trick after his last-minute penalty was saved by keeper Chris Neal. But Vale will be rueing missing arguably the best chance of the game in the 26th minute after Tom Pope skied over with only Carl Ikeme to beat. Victory was Wolves’ seventh in a row – their best since the promotion season of 2008/09 - as they chase the club-record of eight from winter 1988. They also kept their fifth successive clean sheet as their superior goal difference to Leyton Orient put them in pole position. They have now gone 516 minutes without conceding a goal as they prepare to chase that club record for straight wins in next Saturday’s Black Country derby at Walsall. Head coach Kenny Jackett named an unchanged team for the third successive game, the first time this season he has done so. The bench was unchanged as well as striker Leon Clarke continued his exile to a bruised heel. Wolves dominated the first half but it was Vale who had the best chance in the 26th minute, Pope firing over with only Ikeme to beat. Though they didn’t see much of the ball, Vale, who matched Wolves’ 4-2-3-1 formation and had ex-Molineux academy left-sided player Daniel Jones at wide left, looked comfortable with it in possession and well organised. Vale, wearing all blue, kicked off in front of a derby atmosphere boosted by around 2,500 visitors fans who filled the lower tier of the Steve Bull Stand. But it was Wolves, with Michael Jacobs pulling all the strings, who had the first opening in the fourth minute. Jacobs started and finished it, running at Vale’s defence through the middle before looking up and rolling a shot wide from inside the area after rounding Billy Knott at pace. Jacobs was again the man in Wolves’ next chance in the 14th minute when, out of nothing, the former Derby winger flashed in a dipping 30-yarder that just dropped wide. Three minutes later it was Sako’s turn to have a go, but his goalbound angled drive after cutting in from the right hit team-mate Dicko. Wolves’ next chance came in the 23rd minute when Danny Batth fired over as Dicko appeared to have a free header to plant home when Neal has flapped at James Henry’s cross. Then came Pope’s golden opportunity after an uncharacteristic error by Jack Price was seized on by Billy Knott, who raced forward before unselfishly squaring to his unmarked team-mate. The home side returned to the attack to have the only other two openings of the first period. Both went to captain Sam Ricketts, the right-back crashing a towering header against the bar and out after steaming in on the right on to Henry’s inswinging cross on 39. Three minutes later, Ricketts cut inside and lashed a fierce left-foot drive that sailed a narrowly over.
Vale were the first to show in the second half when centre-back Chris Robertson beat Batth to Chris Lines’s deep free kick but could only head wide on 51. But seconds later, Wolves took the lead in somewhat fortuitous fashion. Sako beat two players in a swaggering run down the left before cutting inside and letting fly, his shot taking a hefty deflection – possibly off right-back Jack Grimmer before looping over Neal and into the corner of the net. That was what Wolves needed to relax and push on and they were stopped by illegal means the next time they broke on 67 as Robertson took out Jacobs with one of the most obvious blocks you will see. From the resulting free kick, Sako’s drive cannoned off the wall and Dicko’s follow-up shot was blocked by Richard Duffy. Two goals by Dicko in three minutes settled the match in Wolves’ favour however. First he rifled home fiercely with a shot off the underside of the bar from a yard out after Vale failed to clear Ricketts’s cross. There was time for Vale to bring on Jennison Myrie-Williams and Chris Birchall for Louis Dodds and Richard Duffy on 74 before Wolves made it 3-0. Dicko showed tremendous strength and tenacity to hold off a retreating defence after controlling Sako’s long through ball over the top, turning smartly inside before rifling past Neal from 15 yards. Ikeme saved from Pope’s half-volley and a Jones cross hit Myrie-Williams after a short corner. But Wolves’ seventh straight win was in the bag and Dicko had the chance to make it more emphatic and bag his first hat-trick for the club with a last-minute penalty. The French striker’s low shot was hard enough, but Neal guessed right, diving to his left to push the ball away and Dicko was crowded out as he tried to convert the rebound. bbc Wolves struck three second-half goals to finally see off Port Vale at Molineux and again move above Leyton Orient at the top of League One. Bakary Sako broke the deadlock on 52 minutes when his 20-yard right-foot strike deflected into the top corner. Nouha Dicko then struck twice in two minutes, with a close-range second before finding the bottom corner for his fifth goal in seven games. Nouha Dicko's second brace for Wolves took his overall season's tally to 11, having also scored six goals for League One promotion rivals Rotherham United before signing for Wolves for an undisclosed fee in January. But he missed out on a hat-trick when his last-minute penalty was saved. After Chris Lines fouled James Henry, Vale keeper Chris Neal went full length to his left, to deny the young Frenchman what would have been a first hat-trick in English football. Wolves top scorer Sako's ninth strike of the season, deflected in off Vale defender Jack Grimmer, was only his second since the turn of the year. A seventh straight victory for Kenny Jackett's side takes them back top on goal difference, while Vale remain 10th, despite suffering their third defeat in a row. Vale's best chance came in the 25th minute when top scorer Tom Pope, one-on-one with Wolves keeper Carl Ikeme, lifted the ball over the bar.

Wolves look likely to be unchanged against Port Vale at Molineux as they chase a seventh straight league win. January deadline signing Leon Clarke is close to a return from his heel injury, but looks like being held back for next weekend's trip to Walsall. Michael Jacobs' two goals in last weekend's 3-0 win at Brentford took the former Derby County forward's tally to five in four games.
Port Vale are without midfielder Anthony Griffith (hip injury), but loan defender Jack Grimmer could be fit. Despite being stretchered off with a knee injury in last week's 3-1 defeat by Crewe, he trained on Thursday. If Grimmer does play, the second spot in central defence will go to either Joe Davis, substituted after half an hour against Crewe, or fit-again Richard Duffy, who has not
played since suffering an ankle injury against Plymouth on 5 January but came through 90 minutes of a reserve-team game on Wednesday.
