Saturday 19 March Aston Villa 0 Wolves 1 (Jarvis 38)

Michael Mancienne and Michael Kightly both finally rejoined the first team - our sponsored player after recovering from injury back at Chelski, while Kights has been out for 17 months - and Kights made the bench. But it was his opposite number on the other wing who scored with a cracking goal and the Villa were beaten for the first time since March 1980 (apart from the friendly a couple of years ago).

Wolves said

Wolves did their Premier League survival hopes a power of good as they enjoyed their first win over Aston Villa for 31 years. Matt Jarvis, with a terrific strike, notched the only goal of the game at Villa Park and although Mick McCarthy's men remain in the bottom three of the table, just three points separate eight clubs in the battle to stay up. There was just one change to the line-up that had started against Spurs with Jamie O'Hara returning for Stephen Ward. Wolves attacked the Holte End and home keeper Brad Friedel was forced into a save in only the second minute as he pushed out Nenad Milijaśs's drive that was heading inside the near post after Adam Hammill had pulled the ball back to the Serb. Wayne Hennessey had little difficulty in collecting a Stewart Downing corner before both sides had a chance within a few seconds in the ninth minute. Jarvis spread a pass into the path of fellow winger Hammill who saw his angled shot smothered by Friedel. The ball was cleared upfield and Christophe Berra had to head a dangerous cross from Marc Albrighton over his own crossbar. George Elokobi was penalised for a by-line challenge on Albrighton but Ashley Young's free-kick was cleared and then, from a corner, the ball fell to Downing whose well struck volley bounced to safety off the body of Karl Henry. In the 21st minute Berra looked to have broken his Wolves scoring duck as he headed a Hammill centre past Friedel but the Scot was flagged offside. Then it was the turn of Kevin Doyle to find the Villa net but again the 'score' didn't count as Jarvis's cross had clipped a defender and gone behind before the ball curled back into play. Richard Stearman went into the book after he had caught Young with a late challenge, then Villa sent on Fabian Delph in the place of Nathan Baker. Albrighton was causing problems on the right and after Hennessey had done well to collect a low, driven cross, Kevin Foley had to head behind another centre from the wide man that had gone over keeper's head. Wolves moved into a 38th minute lead thanks to a superb goal from Jarvis. O'Hara lifted over a free=kick from the right which was flicked on by the head of Berra to Jarvis who hit a superb first time shot from the edge of the box off the inside of the far post and into the net. Just before the break Jean Makoun missed a great opportunity of pulling his side level when he was well off target with a free header following a Downing cross.

Half-Time: Villa 0 Wolves 1

The first chance of the second period fell to Albrighton but his 20-yard effort flew gently into the arms of Hennessey. Berra fouled Darren Bent with the free-kick awarded on the 18-yard line although replays showed that the tackle took place just inside the area. The former Sunderland striker took the free-kick himself with the ball hitting the wall and going behind for an unproductive corner. Within a minute Wolves were awarded a free-kick on the edge of the 'D' at the other end after Nigel Reo Coker had tripped Milijaśs. O'Hara touched the free-kick to Henry who rolled it back for the on loan midfielder who blasted his shot a couple of yards wide. A Downing volley was blocked by Stearman before both sides made changes. There were loud boos (and choruses of "You don't know what you're doing") from the home fans when Albrighton was taken off - with Reo Coker also leaving the proceedings. Gabby Agbonlahor and Robert Pires were the duo to go on in their place with Sylvan Ebanks-Blake replacing Hammill for Wolves. O'Hara was only just too high with a tremendous effort from fully 30-yards out and then Friedel had to dive full length to push out a Milijaśs piledriver. O'Hara cut inside a defender and looked on to stretch his team's advantage but his shot hit a Villa man and the ball was eventually scrambled away. Milijaśs hit a free-kick over the bar after Ebanks-Blake had been fouled by Kyle Walker, but there was a let off for Wanderers as Young's shot smashed against the underside of the bar and bounced out before being cleared. Ward went on in place of Jarvis for the closing stages, and moments later Elokobi was yellow carded for an untidy challenge on Walker. In the 81st minute the Villa fans were groaning as Carlos Cuellar blasted the ball high over the bar after Pires had nodded it down to him. There were four minutes of stoppage time during which, Young was booked for a foul on O'Hara and, after Doyle had cut into the Villa box and fired into the side netting, Foley was also cautioned when he kicked the ball away after conceding a free-kick.

the Beeb says

Wolves claimed their first win at Villa Park for over three decades to boost their survival hopes and add to Aston Villa's relegation concerns. The visitors had already seen two first-half efforts disallowed when Matt Jarvis drove home emphatically from a Christophe Berra knock-down. Ashley Young shuddered the bar late on from Jean Makoun's slotted pass but Villa were otherwise poor. Jarvis might have doubled Wolves' lead but Jamie O'Hara failed to feed him. Even so, nothing could take the gloss off a victory that ended 31 years of Villa Park hurt for Wolves, who remain third from bottom but move to within a point of their local rivals with this result. The Villa support were quick to voice their disapproval at Gerard Houllier, the club's embattled manager, and the chorus of derision that greeted the final whistle threatened to drown out the triumphant roar from the away section. But nothing could dull the joy of a Wolves side who made light of their tag as the Premier League's worst travellers. This was only the second time Mick McCarthy's side had won on the road all season, but they began the afternoon on a wave of momentum created by a three-game unbeaten streak and rode it beautifully to extend that encouraging run. There were mitigating circumstances for Villa, who - with Richard Dunne, James Collins and Luke Young ruled out by injury, and Ciaran Clark serving a two-match ban - were missing a quartet of senior defensive personnel. Chris Herd, a 21-year-old Australian making his first Premier League start, was deployed at right-back and the makeshift look of the home defence clearly encouraged Wolves to believe that a first victory at Villa Park since March 1980 was within their grasp. In the initial stages, no one embodied that conviction more than Adam Hammill. The livewire winger caused left-back Nathan Baker all manner of problems for the first half hour, setting up Nenad Milijas for an early strike on goal before himself testing keeper Brad Friedel. Further warning shots were fired across the Villa bows when Wolves had two goals disallowed in quick succession. The first came when Berra headed home from an offside position, the second when a Jarvis cross was somewhat contentiously adjudged to have gone out of play before Kevin Doyle headed home at the far post.

Houllier, who has presided over just six league wins since his appointment last September, clearly did not like what he was seeing, and with 33 minutes gone Baker was withdrawn in favour of Fabian Delph. However, as Jarvis demonstrated in clinical fashion, the Villa defence was in need of more wholesale remedial work. O'Hara floated a right-wing free-kick into the box and when Berra beat Carlos Cuellar to the header, Jarvis gleefully thumped the ball beyond Friedel and in off the post for his fourth league goal of the season. Villa's best work came along the flanks, from where Young and Marc Albrighton sent in several teasing deliveries, but a Wolves defence superbly marshalled by Richard Stearman was equal to whatever came its way. On one of the few occasions when the home side did create a clear first-half opening, the returning Makoun made a complete dog's breakfast of Stewart Downing's clipped centre, heading wide from six yards out. The home support were unimpressed when Houllier sent on Robert Pires and Gabriel Agbonlahor on the hour, and their misgivings proved well-founded. The double substitution had little impact beyond a cushioned header from Pires from which Cuellar sent a fine opportunity blazing over. Nevertheless, the home side came within a whisker of equalising through Young, whose high, driven shot from Makoun's precise through-ball left the crossbar shuddering. A draw, however, would have been harsh on a Wolves side who carried the fight to their opponents and fully deserved local bragging rights.

Sunday 6 March Wolves 3 (Doyle 20, 40-pen, Fletcher 87) Tottenham 3 (Defoe 30, 35, Pavlyuchenko 48)with Dean Richards Tribute

You don't know what you're doing Halsey.   Again and again.

Wolves and Spurs played out a six goal, end to end thriller in front of the television cameras in a game that proved to be an excellent advertisement for Premier League football.  With Ronald Zubar and David Edwards ruled out through injury, Kevin Foley and Stephen Ward came into the side whilst Nenad Milijaš replaced the on loan Jamie O'Hara who was unavailable against his parent club.  After an emotional tribute was paid to the late Dean Richards, Wolves kicked-off attacking the South Bank end.Inside the first minute there was a chance for the visitors as Luka Modric laid the ball into the path of Roman Pavlyuchenko on the edge of the box. But Russian scuffed his shot and the ball rolled tamely wide.  Wolves won a fifth minute corner which was taken by Adam Hammill. Heurelho Gomes punched the ball clear as far as Milijaš who drilled a first time shot over the bar from 20-yards.  Gomes saved at the feet of Milijaš who then headed over the bar following a cross from Hammill.  In the 20th minute Hammill threaded a ball through to Matt Jarvis whose drive was deflected into the side netting by a defender. From Milijaš' corner the ball was headed out by Benoit Assou-Ekotto but only as far as Karl Henry. The skipper played it wide to Milijaš and his cross was headed past Gomes by Kevin Doyle.  Steven Pienaar shot into the side netting as Spurs looked for an instant response and when another Pienaar effort was blocked by Christophe Berra, Modric hit the rebound wide.  Jermaine Jenas went on a surging run from the halfway line to the edge of the home area but his final shot lacked the power to trouble Wayne Hennessey.  But the keeper was left with little chance as Jermain Defoe levelled matters on the half-hour mark. The England striker picked up a loose ball 25-yards out and hit a swerving shot into the top corner.  Five minutes later, he did it again pouncing on a half clearance and rifling a first time effort past Hennessey.  It took just five minutes more for Wanderers to get back on even terms. Doyle's deflected cross went through to Milijaš who was clearly pulled back by Alan Hutton.  The referee pointed straight to the spot and yet only gave the defender a yellow card when Milijaš was clearly through on goal needing only to tap the ball over the line. Doyle sent Gomes the wrong way from the spot.  In the final minute of the half, Milijaš was high and wide from the 18-yard line after Henry had nodded on a Hammill centre.

Half-Time: Wolves 2 Spurs 2

Just three minutes after the break, the home defence struggled to get the ball clear and Jenas played a short pass to Pavlyuchenko who smashed a shot into the roof of the net from the edge of the box.  Ward glanced a header wide after a cross from Jarvis before Michael Dawson went into the book for a late challenge on Hammill.  Good work from Doyle opened up the chance for Jarvis to have an attempt at goal but, from the corner of the area, he fired high over the far angle.  On the hour mark Sylvan Ebanks-Blake went on in place for Ward.  Gomes rescued Spurs in the 64th minute when he touched a low shot from Milijaš onto the post and, shortly afterwards, Hennessey just managed to take the ball off Defoe's foot with Richard Stearman doing his best to intervene.  Wingers Hammill and Jarvis combined to set up a chance for Ebanks-Blake but he fired wide of the post before both teams made a change in the 74th minute with Steven Fletcher replacing Hammill and Aaron Lennon going on in place of Pavlyuchenko.  At full stretch, Milijaš was wide as he connected with a Doyle cross before William Gallas became the third Spurs man to go into the book after pulling back Ebanks-Blake.  Tottenham substitute Gareth Bale shot wide of a virtually open goal after a mix up between Henry and George Elokobi had gifted the Welsh international the opportunity. With ten minutes remaining, Stearman looked to have equalised as he headed in a Milijaš free-kick only for the referee to disallow it for a foul on Gomes. Replays later showed that Stearman was more the victim than the villain.  An on target effort from Henry bounced clear off a defender and then there was a let off for Wolves as Defoe was inches away from completing his hat-trick as his snapshot came back off the post.  But Wolves deserved something from the game and it arrived in the 87th minute with Fletcher looping home a precision header following a cross from Jarvis.

MATCH PREVIEW

The season's ambition of these clubs differ greatly, but their sorrow will be shared ahead of kick-off when they honour the memory of Dean Richards. Richards, who played as a defender for both clubs, died last weekend aged 36 after a long illness. He became a firm favourite at Wolves following his move from Bradford in 1995, playing 145 games before joining Southampton. He signed for Tottenham in 2001 for Ł8.1m - a then-record fee for an uncapped English player - and made 81 appearances for the club before being forced to retire as he was suffering from dizzy spells and headaches.
Richards' wife and two sons are due to attend Sunday's game, and a representative from each of his four former clubs will hold aloft their team's shirt in the centre circle prior to a minute's applause before kick-off.

The game itself is an opportunity for Wolves to climb out of the relegation zone, and for Tottenham to bolster their chances of a top-four finish and Champions League qualification. Spurs will be playing for the first time in 12 days since a 3-1 defeat at Blackpool, who Wolves thrashed 4-0 last weekend to move off the bottom.
