29 Tuesday 28th January 19:45 Oldham Athletic 0 Wolves 3 McDonald 50' Jacobs 89' Henry 90' FT 90 +5 HT 0-0 27 January 2014 Oldham 0 Wolves 3 - match report http://www.expressandstar.com/sport/wolverhampton-wanderers-fc/2014/01/28/oldham-0-wolves-3-match-report/ Super Wolves made it three successive wins with another convincing performance to beat Oldham 3-0. Second-half goals from man of the match Kevin McDonald (49), Michael Jacobs (88) and substitute James Henry (90+3) gave Kenny Jackett’s side their equal biggest win since August. But Wolves remain third in League One, two points behind Leyton Orient and four adrift of Brentford after the Os won 2-0 against Coventry and the Bees 3-1 against Bristol City. The margin of Wolves’ victory could have been more emphatic as Nouha Dicko fired against the bar in the first half after being foiled on the line by keeper Mark Oxley early on. There was a hungry performance from Bakary Sako and numerous other promising displays including Jack Price and Dicko as the squad look at their strongest this season. Wolves head coach Jackett made one change from the side that beat Bristol City 3-1 on Saturday. Henry lost his place through form for the first time since he signed for the club to be replaced by Sako, who was making his first start since Gillingham away. Celtic target Leigh Griffiths was among the substitutes as his move to Parkhead remains in the balance, with no further bids from the Hoops. In a lively, highly competitive first half, Oldham created the first chance in the eight minute when James Dayton’s angled shot was beaten away by keeper Aaron McCarey. Wolves replied quickly and went desperately close to an opener in the 12th minute. Sako made room down the left and swept over a cross for Nouha Dicko, whose effort was superbly blocked on the line by Oxley. A minute later Oxley was in action again as Sako’s right-foot volley from Michael Jacobs’s corner had the Latics keeper at full stretch diving to his right to fingertip the ball away. Oldham returned to the attack and in the 17th minute, Jonson Clarke-Harris advanced before hitting a low drive from 25 yards that McCarey tipped away. Wolves appeared to have a decent shout for a penalty when Lee Evans appeared to be sent sprawling chasing a pass but referee Graham Salisbury waved play on. Wolves, fortified by a hungry-looking Sako and another impressive outing from Jack Price in midfield, were playing some good passing football. And they threatened again in the 25th minute when Sako picked up the ball in the inside left position. Spinning his marker, he launched a shot on the turn that had plenty of power but was too close to Oxley to trouble the Oldham keeper. Ten minutes later, Dayton wasted a chance to put the Latics in front when he sliced wide from the edge of the box after Jonanthan Grounds squared across the box after Jacobs had lost possession upfield. But Wolves went closest in the half a minute later when dangerman Dicko flashed a shot on the turn against the bar from 20 yards, the ball bouncing harmlessly away. Wolves maintained their momentum as they looked for the breakthrough before half-time and Jacobs’s chip floated inches over after he started a move that featured good interplay between McDonald and Price. The visitors had to withstand some late pressure in first-half time added on as Oldham won two corners. Wolves weren’t helped by some unconvincing goalkeeping from McCarey, who was in no man’s land for both flag kicks only for his blushes to be spared. Price eventually cleared from the first one and Jonson Clarke-Harris should have done better from the second, only to screw well wide with a decent sight of goal.
Wolves introduced Kevin Doyle for Evans at half-time and Oldham were soon made to pay for their wastefulness as the visitors scored from the first attack of the second half. McDonald showed typical calmness as he opted to place his shot into the corner of the net to Oxley’s right as he ran onto a pass back from Jacobs, who dribbled across goal cutting in from the right. Three minutes later, Wolves twice went desperately close to a second goal. Jacobs showed superb skill and close control to slalom through a tackle to leave himself with only Oxley to beat but the keeper showed fine reflexes to block, then a defender got back to hack Dicko’s hooked follow-up off the line. Oldham had their moments as the game opened up in the second half and James Tarkowski headed just over at the far post on 61. But Wolves almost grabbed a second goal nine minute later when Danny Batth flew in for a header which flashed just wide from Jacobs’s corner. Gary Harkins, who scored twice and was involved in four of Oldham’s goals in their astonishing 5-4 comeback win against Peterborough on Saturday, tested McCarey, who beat away his well-struck shot and the rebound came too quickly for substitute Danny Philliskirk to convert. Wolves clinched the points in ruthless fashion with a superbly-worked second goal that said everything about the way they are mastering a more fluid passing game. Man of the match McDonald spotted Ricketts sprinting forwards from right back and rolled the ball into his path for a quick cross that was met by a crisp, first-time, swerving finish from Jacobs that gave Oxley no chance. Henry, who came on for Sako in the 79th minute, made it 3-0 in the third of the four minutes of time added on when he slid in to fire into the roof of the net after Dicko had cut inside and Oxley parried his drive. Oldham midfielder David Worrall played 90 minutes for the first time since April in Saturday's 5-4 comeback win against Peterborough United. Defender Carl Winchester
(groin) and midfielder Anton Rodgers (knee) are doubts for the clash. Wolves hope to have midfielder Dave Edwards (foot) available after missing Saturday's 3-1 win over Bristol City. Full-back Matt Doherty (hamstring) continued his comeback
by scoring in a training ground friendly on Monday. This will be the fourth time the two sides have met this season - and honours are even. Wolves beat the Latics 2-0 in the league in October but, after a 1-1 FA Cup first round draw at Boundary Park 18 days later, Oldham won the replay 2-1 at Molineux.
28 Saturday 25th January 15:00 Wolves 3 Bristol City 1 Wolves 3 Dicko 10′, 44′ Sako 76′ Bristol City 1 Baldock 24′ (pen) FT 90 +4 25 January 2014 HT 2-1 Tim Nash in the Star http://www.expressandstar.com/sport/wolverha mpton-wanderers-fc/2014/01/25/wolves-3-bristol-city-1-match-report/ Wolves 3 Bristol City 1 - match report Wolves made it back-to-back wins for the first time since the start of November with an ultimately comfortable win against struggling Bristol City. Nouha Dicko made it a scoring debut after his permanent move with the ninth-minute opener then fired the second off Derrick Williams for an own goal two minutes before the break. Sam Baldock (24) reduced the arrears from the spot after James Henry pulled back Greg Cunningham. But substitute Bakary Sako restored Wolves’ two-goal cushion with a fierce drive on 76 and it could have been more emphatic with Kevin McDonald having an effort tipped over and Lee Evans blazing over.
Head coach Kenny Jackett made two changes from the side that beat Preston 2-0 two weeks ago. Jack Price and Nouha Dicko replaced Dave Edwards, who was out with a slight foot injury, and Leigh Griffiths, who dropped to the bench.
Before the game, there was a minute’s applause in honour of Wolves goalkeeping great Bert Williams, who died last Sunday aged 93. Wolves players past and present Malcolm Finlayson, Ron Flowers, Phil Parkes and Carl Ikeme joined the Williams family pitchside. Gold flowers spelling out ‘BERT’ were carried by goalkeepers Wolves’ Aaron McCarey and Elliott Parish of Bristol City and placed behind the respective goals. Bristol City kicked off in driving rain on a heavy pitch, and goalmouth action was relatively thin on the ground in a first half which didn’t flow particularly well, with the heavy conditions making it difficult for both teams to play attractive football. Lee Evans was the most advanced midfielder in the absence of Edwards, and he was virtually a second striker alongside Dicko at times. The visitors had the first chance in the sixth minute when one-time Wolves target Marvin Elliott put Bobby Reid through the middle but McCarey was equal to his first-time shot, beating it away.
Wolves responded in the best way – by taking the lead. And it was a debut goal for Dicko, who latched onto a first-time flick by Michael Jacobs and ran at a defender before unleashing a fierce, low left-foot shot that beat Parish at his near post. Their tails up, captain Sam Ricketts showed the confidence suddenly flooding through the gold and black ranks by letting fly in the 13th minute.with a curling effort from the corner of the box that floated over the bar. Bristol City levelled when Baldock rolled home a spot-kick sending McCarey the wrong way after Henry pushed Cunningham as he broke onto a return pass in the box. Chances were thin on the ground for the rest of the half, although Wolves remained the side on top. The game became scrappy, and the home fans were unhappy at referee Nigel Miller after he allowed a challenge by Elliott which left Price in a crumpled heap, to go unpunished. The game became interesting again just before the break when Jacobs’s shot from spilled but no Wolves player was close enough to latch onto the rebound. Two minutes before the interval, Wolves restored their lead when Dicko’s right foot shot on the turn took a wicked deflection off left-back Williams and diverted into the net. Then Evans sidefooted straight at Parish through a crowd of players when either side of him would surely have resulted in a goal with the keeper unsighted after Price worked it to him. Wolves looked to further reinforce their advantage at the start of the second half and Jacobs saw his left-footed flick from Henry’s corner fly into the sidenetting on 49. Six minutes later, Jacobs was gifted a chance by Henry but delayed shooting when clean through, allowing himself to be tackled. In the ensuing melee, Dicko and Henry had shots blocked as Wolves desperately tried to grab a third goal. But on the hour, Wolves suddenly had some defending to do as Greg Cunningham saw a rising shot sail inches over after Jay Emmanuel-Thomas had McCarey at full stretch with an angled effort and Price threw himself in front of Elliott’s follow-up as the hosts struggled to clear their lines. Wolves returned to the attack through Henry, who was just off target with a first-time left-foot flick from Golbourne’s cross on 65. Sako was introduced for Henry on 69 as Wolves looked for fresh energy and ideas. The home side were building up a head of steam and Kevin McDonald saw a dipping curling effort from 30 yards tipped over by Parish on 73. Three minutes later they got the third goal they had been threatening when Sako lashed a typically fierce drive into the bottom corner first time after Evans flicked it back to him following a chip when the players seemed to stop for a fraction of a second expecting a Wolves free kick for a challenge on the latter. That blew out any remaining fire struggling City had, and Wolves played out the rest of the game with the only doubt being whether Jackett’s side would get a fourth goal. They tried; as Dicko’s angled shot trickled wide after he robbed Williams, Evans blazed over and the sliding Sako was inches away from a superb cross from Jacobs in the dying minutes.
But there could be few arguments with the victory, with an ultimately comprehensive win for Wolves.
By Steve Marshall BBC Sport at Molineux Wolves closed the gap on League One's automatic promotion places to two points with victory over Bristol City. Nouha Dicko fired Wolves ahead with an angled left-foot shot but City levelled with Sam Baldock's penalty after James Henry pulled down Greg Cunningham. The hosts were back in front when Dicko's cross-shot deflected in off visiting defender Derrick Williams. And substitute Bakary Sako settled it with a fierce low left-footed first-time drive from 20 yards. Victory means third-placed Wolves now trail leaders Brentford by four points and are two behind Leyton Orient, while Steve Cotterill's City side are second from bottom, three points from safety. A minute's applause was held before the game to celebrate the career of Wolves legend and former England goalkeeper Bert Williams, who died on Sunday. Bristol City began brightly and Bobby Reid forced an early save out of home keeper Aaron McCarey before Dicko, who had a spell on loan at Wolves last season before joining permanently from Wigan earlier this month, burst on to Michael Jacobs's pass and drilled powerfully past Elliot Parish. Baldock's penalty deservedly levelled matters but the pace on Dicko's cross was too much for Williams, who could only turn the ball past his own keeper as Wolves went back in front just before half-time. Jay Emmanuel-Thomas forced a full-length save from McCarey and fired a long-range free-kick narrowly wide as Bristol City searched for an equaliser before Sako fired in from Lee Evans's pass. VIEW FROM THE DRESSING ROOM
Bristol City manager Steve Cotterill told BBC Radio Bristol: Play media
"There was nothing wrong with where we were and what we were doing, it was our selection. "As disappointing as it is, we will continue to play like that. We've played that from the minute I came in the door and we will not change. "They know that would be the disappointment of today and we will work to make sure this doesn't happen again." Wolves could include forward Nouha Dicko, who re-signed for the club permanently before last weekend's game at Crawley was postponed. Defender Ethan Ebanks-Landell and midfielder Jack Price (both knee) are fit to return. Bristol City have not won any of their last 20 games at Molineux - their last victory came in 1931. Boss Steve Cotterill says he has only one injury doubt, but did not name the player in question. VIEW FROM THE TRAINING GROUND
Bristol City loan midfielder Simon Gillett told BBC Radio Bristol: "It took me a couple of games to get going, having not played for a while, but I'm really enjoying playing regularly and that's all I can ask for. "If we can go out and perform as we have been doing then we've got a chance in every game. "We're going to go to Molineux this weekend and give it a good go. "I've played there before and it is tough but every game seems to be like that these days."

Crawley 2 Clarke 27′ Tubbs 32′ Wolverhampton Wanderers 1 Henry 25′ FT 90 +4 HT 2-1 Crawley Town 2 Wolves 1 - match report Wolves produced their worst performance for some time as their 10-match unbeaten run ended to a spirited Crawley.
James Henry (25) put Kenny Jackett’s side with his eighth goal of the season but Billy Clarke levelled a minute later and Matt Tubbs (31) lobbed the winner in front of a record League crowd of 5,680 crowd at Broadfields Stadium. Although early substitute Leon Clarke and Henry went desperately close on 40 minutes and Bakary Sako forced a superb save after the break, Wolves never scaled the heights of their recent performances against a Crawley team that never gave them a moment’s peace on a bobbly pitch that made both teams play it longer. Head coach Jackett made the one expected change to the team that drew 0-0 against Shrewsbury on Saturday. Captain Sam Ricketts returned to the side at right-back for Ethan Ebanks-Landell, who failed to make the 18. Wolves kicked off but Crawley made the better start, and Danny Batth had to make a smart block to deny Josh Simpson after keeper Paul Jones’s giant kick saw Adam Drury take the ball around Carl Ikeme and driven wide before pulling the ball back after four minutes. Wolves struggled to get their passing game going on a difficult, bobbly pitch and were careless at times in possession, limiting their attempts to build attacks. Ikeme was in action again, although this time in freakish circumstances when Tubbs’s mis-hit cross needed to be tipped over from just under the bar in the 16th minute. Wolves’ first attempt on goal came three minutes later but it was a woeful shot from Sako that trickled comfortably wide of Paul Jones’s left-hand post from 25 yards. But the visitors stunned Crawley with a somewhat speculative goal when Henry unleashed a fierce, angled drive from out on the right. Jones should have dived, but instead went for it with his feet and ended up sliding it into the top corner of the net as Wolves took an undeserved lead. Crawley however, were level within 60 seconds as unusually woeful defending from Wolves saw the home side work the ball from their left to right, and after Danny Batth blocked Tubbs’s shot, Billy Clarke was unmarked to sidefoot the ball home at the far post. Five minutes later, Crawley went ahead as Wolves stood square and Tubbs sprinted through them before lobbing Ikeme. Wolves were at sixes and sevens, showing none of the composure that has characterised their record-breaking winning run. Jackett’s response was to make an early change which saw Michael Jacobs replaced by Clarke and a switch from 4-2-3-1 to 4-4-2, with Clarke joining Nouha Dicko up front. Within three minutes, the switch almost paid off when Wolves were guilty of stunning double miss. A long pass from Ricketts saw Jones rooted to his line and Clarke latched onto it, but he could only spear straight at the keeper. The rebound fell to Henry, who hooked over with Jones committed. Wolves showed a welcome urgency at the start of the second half, but it wasn’t matched by a fluency in their passing as to a man, they continually struggled to keep possession. But they managed to create the first chance of the half in the 50th minute when Dicko and Sako worked an opening for Henry, whose first-time drive was superbly tipped wide by Jones. It took another 20 minutes for the next opening, but it was one worth waiting for as Sako’s blistering angled drive was met by a flying save from Jones at his near post from a loose ball after Golbourne ran into trouble. In a desperate attempt to inject some fresh invention into his team, Jackett made a double substitution in the 74th minute. But instead of lifting Wolves, it was Crawley who threatened as Josh Simpson’s backheel from Billy Clarke’s cross drifted inches wide of the far post on 77. Wolves threw Batth up front in the latter stages as they strove desperately for an equaliser, but Crawley stood firm and the visitors failed to create another opening on a disappointing night.

Wolves make their first visit to the Broadfield Stadium. They won the first-ever meeting between the two sides 2-1 at Molineux in August through Leigh Griffiths's injury-time penalty just two minutes after Crawley forward Billy Clarke appeared to have stolen a point. Crawley will check on the fitness of Rory Fallon ahead of Tuesday night's visit of League One leaders Wolves. The New Zealand striker missed Saturday's 1-0 home win over Colchester United with a heel problem. Wolves have skipper Sam Ricketts fit to return (quad muscle injury) as they bid to bounce back from Saturday's two dropped points against Shrewsbury Town. Despite the end of their club record nine-game winning run, Wolves remain unbeaten in over two months. They have not lost since their last trip to the south-east at Gillingham on 3 January, when they lost 1-0. Wolves head coach Kenny Jackett told BBC WM: "Shrewsbury played very well on Saturday and we very rarely got Nouha Dicko going. But there was no lack of attitude and effort. We left ourselves open at the back at the end, That showed how much the players wanted to win. This is still a big, crucial run for the club and this game at Crawley is one which we should be relishing. John Gregory is a manager with a proven track record. I believe there is a lot of sand on the pitch, but I don't think it's going to hamper either side. We don't want the conditions to be an excuse. We know what it's like at this time of year."

Goals from the impressive Dave Edwards (28) and Lee Evans (55) were the high points of a richly-deserved first win in four games for Kenny Jackett’s side against one of their main rivals in the chase for the Championship. But it could and should have been more emphatic as Evans headed over, Michael Jacobs prodded over, Kevin McDonald had an effort saved, Edwards was twice denied in one-on-ones and Leigh Griffiths wasted two similar chances. Head coach Jackett made three changes from the team that lost 1-0 at Gillingham eight days ago. But the big news was that Aaron McCarey kept his place in goal ahead of Wayne Hennessey, who was on the bench after apologising for his refusal to play at Gillingham. Richard Stearman, Lee Evans and Leigh Griffiths replaced George Elokobi, Bakary Sako and Kevin Doyle, who all dropped to the bench, where there was no place again for Bjorn Sigurdarson. With rumours sweeping Molineux that Wigan Nouha Dicko was in the stands watching the game at the venue where he had a loan spell last season, Wolves controlled the first half and deservedly led.
Preston, backed by a sell-out allocation of 3,500 fans, had no answer to Wolves’ extra man in midfield as the home side played a 4-2-3-1 formation against their more rigid 4-4-2. Edwards was a huge influence, the visitors failing to pick him up time and time again as he made runs from deep. Wolves created the first chance in the 10th minute when Lee Evans arrived late to send a header narrowly over the bar from Sam Ricketts’s cross. Edwards found himself clean through for the first time in the 21st minute when James Henry put him in the clear. His shot beat keeper Declan Rudd but was hacked off the line by Jack King. Preston had the ball in the net in the 23rd minute when Iain Hume stabbed home at the far post from Paul Gallagher’s cross but the assistant’s flag went up immediately and it was ruled out for offside. Leigh Griffiths wasn’t having his most productive outing and his frustrations got the better of him in the 26th minute when he was booked for a late challenge. He was all smiles soon after though as Wolves took a deserved lead. This time the impressive Kevin McDonald slide him in and he drew Rudd before calmly slotting home his third goal of the season. As the players and fans celebrated, the referee had a long chat with Griffiths, who moments earlier had tried to con him to win a penalty by ‘buying’ a push from a defender and falling dramatically to the ground. There was a scare for Wolves on the half hour when Joe Garner’s chip from out wide hit the bar and bounced away with McCarey motionless. But Wolves hit back and should have made it 2-0 on 37 when Michael Jacobs could only divert the ball over the bar after Rudd parried McDonald’s fierce first-time drive. Wolves went even closer a minute later when Rudd blocked after Evans put through Edwards again in a one-on-one. And Griffiths wasted the chance to double their lead in the second minute of the two of time added on at the end of the half when he could only lob weakly at Rudd after Henry’s chip put him clean through. The same combination tried to provide a breakthrough after the restart on 49 but Griffiths could only slice right-footed into the South Bank after Henry allowed him to have the angled shot on the run. There was a sense that Wolves needed a second goal to be sure of the points and they didn’t have long to wait for it. Evans tapped home from six yards out after Rudd could only parry Henry’s angled blockbuster after he chose to shoot with Edwards unmarked to his left in the box. It should have been 3-0 in the 58th minute when Henry again put Griffiths through but the Scotland international fired inches wide. Wolves replaced Griffiths with Liam McAlinden as they sought fresh energy up front. But despite a flurry from Preston which brought a couple of corners and a curling shot from Paul Gallagher that was pushed away by McCarey, they didn’t really need it.
BBC: Teenager Lee Evans scored his first goal since August as Wolves overcame promotion rivals Preston at Molineux. After early pressure from the home side, Dave Edwards slotted under keeper Declan Rudd to put them in front. Joe Garner almost levelled when his curling shot struck the crossbar, but Evans doubled the lead after Rudd had saved James Henry's initial effort. Paul Gallagher forced a good save from Aaron McCarey, but Preston's hopes of a fourth successive win came to nothing. The victory was only the second in eight games for Wolves, who remained in third place, only two points behind Leyton Orient and three adrift of leaders Brentford. And 19-year-old Evans' goal in his first start since November justified manager Kenny Jackett's decision to restore him to the team. Despite the result, Preston held onto fourth, five points behind Wolves, but six clear of Rotherham, leaving them well-placed to push for at least a play-off place in the remainder of the season.

Wolves have no new injury concerns for the visit of fellow League One promotion chasers Preston North End. Defender Richard Stearman is available after a one-match ban, while goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey is back in the squad after refusing to play at Gillingham. Preston manager Simon Grayson has the luxury of selecting from a squad without any injuries or suspensions. Top scorer Joe Garner will hope for a recall to the starting having only been a substitute in recent games.

Big news before the match is that Wayne Hennessey refused to play. Kenny described this as "disappointing". The twittersphere was less restrained. Aaron McCarety wasnb;t at fault for the Gills late winner - it was a pass off Sam's shin after a lazy "clearance" from Golbourne went for a corner. Wolves huffed and puffed but didn't test Nelson in the Gills goal.
Gillingham 1 Wolves 0 - match report Woeful Wolves crashed to a last-gasp goal from Cody McDonald as their struggles up front were exposed again. On a night when head coach Kenny Jackett revealed keeper Wayne Hennessey had refused to play amid speculation of a move to Crystal Palace, Wolves failed to force a single save from Gills shotstopper Stuart Nelson and succumbed to McDonald’s injury-time winner.
Jackett made five changes to the side that drew 1-1 at Tranmere on New Year’s Day as he looked to keep his side as fresh as possible as they took the field just 51 hours after playing at Prenton Park. Aaron McCarey – who made his Wolves League debut - George Elokobi, Scott Golbourne, James Henry and Kevin Doyle replaced Carl Ikeme, Ethan Ebanks-Landell, Richard Stearman, Jake Cassidy and Leigh Griffiths. Ikeme and Ebanks-Landell were injured and Stearman was suspended as a threadbare Wolves were without six players, Jack Price, Liam McAlinden and Matt Doherty completing the list of absentees. Elokobi made his first League start of the season while Henry returned from a groin injury.
Jackett’s unhappiness with his attack was shown by yet another permutation up front as it quickly became apparent that Sako was playing up front alongside Doyle. Wolves made the early running and tried to play some decent passing football. The visitors created the first of very few chances in the first half as Michael Jacobs slid in to stab goalwards from Henry’s cross but it flew straight at keeper Stuart Nelson after nine minutes. Sako screwed well wide on the volley from Kevin McDonald’s cross on the run on 26 as Wolves continued to look the better side. Danny Batth and George Elokobi tried to force home on 32 after a challenge on Nelson but the referee blew for a foul on the Gills keeper. The only other chance of the first half was a volley from Kevin McDonald that flew straight at Nelson after Doyle flicked on Golbourne’s cross on 37.The half-time statistics showed Wolves had 11 shots to Gillingham’s two, along with seven corners for the visitors. But only three were on target and they still failed to seriously work the opposition keeper. Kedwell had the first half chance of the second period four minutes after the restart but could only lash well over on the as Batth slid in. A minute later Jacobs sent a rising left-foot shot over the bar from 22 yards. There was a let-off for Wolves on 55 when Cody McDonald latched onto a cut-back from the right but McCarey reacted superbly to block with his legs. Jackett tried to inject fresh life into Wolves’ limp attack when he brought on Griffiths for Henry on 62 and Cassidy for Doyle 13 minutes later. But it made little difference as Wolves looked desperate and devoid of ideas going forward as passes and crosses were overhit or blocked. Instead in a poor second half that deteriorated along with the pitch as a fierce wind took hold, Gillingham looked the more dangerous side. Kedwell smacked a shot against the base of the far post on 82 after getting the wrong side of Batth, the ball bouncing away to safety. Then in the second of the two minutes added on at the end, Cody McDonald drilled home the winner from 10 yards after Wolves failed to clear a corner from the Gills’ right. It was little more than Wolves deserved after failing to work Nelson and they have plenty to do to appease their fans as their struggle for points and goals goes on.

Gillingham have loan duo Jack Marriott and Elliott Hewitt available but will check on midfielders Amine Linganzi (hamstring) and Danny Hollands (knee). Winger Myles Weston (hamstring) is also a concern but striker Danny Kedwell is out after a hernia operation.
Wolves will be without goalkeeper Carl Ikeme for at least four weeks after fracturing a bone in his left hand. Wolves lost 1-0 on their last trip to Gillingham on 30 October 2004 when Matt Jarvis (later to move to Molineux) got the only goal in what proved to be Dave Jones' last game in charge Defender Richard Stearman is suspended, having been sent off in the New Year's Day 1-1 draw against Tranmere Rovers. Wolves, who can return to the top of League One if they win, have gone unbeaten over Christmas, although drawing three of their four games during the festive period. In their last three home games, Gillingham have held two promotion-chasing sides, Peterborough and Walsall, to 2-2 draws, either side of being beaten only by a last-minute winner against Orient. Peter Taylor's side have been allowed a few extra days' recovery time, after Wednesday's postponement at Stevenage. VIEW FROM THE TRAINING GROUND Gillingham manager Peter Taylor told BBC Radio Kent: "With so many games over the Christmas period it means the players have a little bit of a breather. Kenny Jackett has got a very good, organised team but I'm sure he gets fed up that other teams put that little bit extra in against them. Wolves is a great opportunity for the players to go and show what they can do. It's a great game and it shows the strength of League One. We have only had one point from games against Walsall and Leyton Orient but they are two very good teams and we could have got more points. It shows we are progressing." Wolves head coach Kenny Jackett told BBC WM: "It's an opportunity to show people on TV that we're a good team who play good football. I'm pleased with the spirit we're showing. There's frustration that we didn't beat Tranmere as we had the lion's share of possession. It's just a case of being a bit more ruthless in front of goal. We need to find the right equation going forward. James Henry will have a fitness test on his groin injury on Friday morning."

Tranmere 1 Wolves 1 - match report http://www.expressandstar.com/sport/wolverhampton-wanderers-fc/2014/01/01/tranmere-1-wolves-1-match-report/ Hardworking Wolves had to settle for another point as both teams ended with 10 men in a rousing against Tranmere. Richard Stearman was sent off for hauling back Ryan Lowe in the 18th minute and James Wallace followed him a minute before the break for a nasty lunge on Ethan Ebanks-Landell. By then Lowe had put Tranmere in front on 34, and it took a spirited second-half comeback by Wolves to drag themselves back into the game via a superb equaliser from Dave Edwards on 54. Wolves had the better chances but Tranmere had an effort disallowed through Kristoffer Peterson for offside in the 87th minute. Head coach Kenny Jackett made two changes to the side that drew 1-1 with Leyton Orient on Sunday. Both were enforced, with Edwards and Leigh Griffiths recalled for the injured Jack Price (knee) and James Henry (groin), who both came off in the last game. Tranmere had an unfamiliar look to a defence left threadbare with right-back Danny Holmes (hip), Ian Goodison (thigh) and Jim McNulty (ill) all out. They signed Everton right-back Matthew Pennington and Fulham centre-back Stephen Arthurworrey, both on loan, to make their debuts. Wolves started in a 4-4-2 formation – changed from 4-2-3-1 against Orient – and looked to take the game to Rovers. Bakary Sako forced an early leap from keeper Owain Fon Williams from an angled chip after 44 seconds. Sako had the next chance in the 14th minute and should have done better than roll the ball wide after working himself into a shooting position following a one-two with Griffiths. But the game changed in the 18th minute when Stearman recklessly pulled back Ryan Lowe as he was clean through on goal after the Wolves man had been caught napping from Andy Robinson’s pass. Wolves were all at sixes and sevens for a while as they tried to reorganise and Jason Koumas’s resulting curling free kick flew wide on 19 and Wallace headed wide from Robinson’s corner on 20 as Tranmere went for the jugular to cash in on their numerical advantage. There was another scare for Wolves in the 25th minute when Arturworrey arrived late at the far post from another Robinson corner, but he couldn’t quote connect. The visitors had more defending to do in the 31st minute when Danny Batth blocked Robinson’s shot from the edge of the box. But they couldn’t do anything to prevent Tranmere taking the lead. Wolves failed to close down as Ash Taylor advanced forward from the back, and when Lowe peeled off the last man and the Taylor’s chip dropped to him over the top, the veteran striker caught it early as Carl Ikeme came out and the ball squeezed in the far corner of the net. Wolves looked uncertain and shaky after the disruption of Stearman’s dismissal. But they fashioned a chance and the best move of the game in the 39th minute when Michael Jacobs exchanged passes with Griffiths, turned a defender and saw his low shot tipped away by Fon Williams. From the resulting corner on 40, Fon Williams came to Rovers’ rescue again when he palmed away Batth’s header at the foot of the post. Tranmere’s numerical advantage disappeared a minute before the break when Wallace earned his marching orders for a disgraceful studs-up challenge on Ethan Ebanks-Landell, who thankfully escaped injury.
Wolves swapped Ebanks-Landell for Scott Golbourne at the break which saw Sam Ricketts join Batth at centre-half and Edwards switch to right-back with Jacobs, Kevin McDonald and Sako in midfield. And, in a determined, high-tempo start to the half, Wolves hit back to leave Tranmere on the back foot. They kept the pressure on Rovers’ back line from the first whistle, eventually levelling with a superb strike from Edwards, who unleashed a tremendous left-foot falling volley from 16 yards that Fon Williams could only help into the roof of the net after Jacobs had cut the ball back from the goalline on the left. Wolves’ tails were up and Jacobs, who had another high quality game, went desperately close with a chip that had Fon Williams at full stretch to tip over on 56. But with both teams going for the win, it became end to end and Wolves had a double let-off on the hour. Ridehalgh missed his kick in front of goal after the ball had been pumped back in when Taylor’s point-blank header from a corner had been blocked. Wolves remained on the attack and Griffiths saw a shot held after cutting inside on 61 before Jackett introduced Kevin Doyle for Jake Cassidy, who had had a quieter game, on 64. Tranmere were indebted to Matthew Pennington after the on-loan Everton defender cut out a pass across goal intended for Jacobs from Griffiths, who had run half the length of the pitch. As the game continued to go from end to end, the dangerous Kristoffer Peterson found himself clean through only to delay his shot and be shepherded out of danger by McDonald, who had a growing influence as the game wore on. Wolves went close to a second goal on 72 when Ricketts’s curling shot after cutting inside was tipped over by Fon Williams. Jacobs then took out two defenders with a dummy 11 minutes from only for his shot to be blocked. Sako was only a foot away with a free kick from 25 yards on 82 before Wolves’ hearts were in their mouths on 87 when Peterson had an effort disallowed for offside, with a Tranmere player in front of Ikeme. Wolves had the final chance in the fourth minute of time added on when substitute David Davis’s left-foot shot was tipped away. But the visitors will be pleased with a point but maybe feel hard done by that it wasn’t all three after being the better team in the second half.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/25513040 David Edwards cancelled out Ryan Lowe's goal as both Wolves and Tranmere played over 45 minutes with 10 men. Wolves' Richard Stearman was dismissed for pulling Lowe back 20 yards out and minutes later the striker beat Carl Ikeme to a through-ball and poked in. James Wallace saw red for a high tackle before Edwards volleyed Michael Jacobs' cross in at the back post to level. Lowe turned home from close range on 87 minutes, only to see the referee's assistant flagging for offside. Wolves overtake Leyton Orient, who were not in action on New Year's Day, to go second in League One, three points behind leaders Brentford.

Tranmere Rovers have a defensive crisis ahead of the visit of Wolves. Full-back Danny Holmes (abductor) is out for three weeks, while loanee Liam Ridehalgh has returned to Huddersfield, but captain James Wallace is available after recovering
from a head injury. Wolves will be forced into a change in midfield as Jack Price has been ruled out for a month with a knee problem. Jake Cassidy, who has enjoyed two successful loan spells at Tranmere, may continue up front for Wanderers. But head coach Kenny Jackett may choose to rotate his team with a trip to Gillingham to come just two days later, with Leigh Griffiths, Kevin Doyle and David Edwards
among those hoping for recalls to the starting line-up
