Saturday 25th February Newcastle 2 Cisse 6′ Gutierrez 18′ Wolves  2 Jarvis 50′ Doyle 66′

TC gets off to a great start by engineering a great comeback and dropping  the awful Roger Johnson.  Jarvo and Doyler deliver as Zubes says he's back.
Meanwhile the Mail’s Patrick Collins was not too enamoured with a “contemptible” bookie outside Molineux. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/article-2106474/Terry-Connor-treated-shamefully-Wolves-Patrick-Collins.html

Terry Connor's reign as Wolves boss got off to a promising start as they came back from two goals down to earn a point at Newcastle.
Connor was appointed Wanderers boss on Friday and given 13 games to save the west Midlands club from relegation.
But his side fell behind to a sixth-minute Papiss Cisse goal before Jonas Gutierrez doubled Newcastle's lead. However, Matt Jarvis' strike gave Wolves hope and Kevin Doyle's finish earned Connor's side a deserved point.
The reputation of Wolves owner Steve Morgan and chief executive Jez Moxey will stand or fall with the success of Connor, who has spent over a decade on the staff at Molineux but has never before held a managerial job at a professional club. In Friday's press conference, the pair offered an eloquent and heart-felt defence of the recruitment process that led to Connor's appointment, insisting they are "delighted" with their choice. However, with "13 cup finals" - including this - to play, only confident, disciplined and spirited performances on the pitch will save Wanderers from the drop.  While it was not entirely disciplined - especially in the first quarter of the match - it was an increasingly confident display from the visitors, that left no doubt as to the strength of their spirit.
Under Connor's predecessor Mick McCarthy, Wolves' Achilles heel was their defensive frailty, but the new boss made three changes to his back-line - including dropping captain Roger Johnson - and barring one costly slip from Christophe Berra for the opening goal, they were much more compact and organised.  Connor was not helped by the absence of top-scorer Steven Fletcher with a virus, but Doyle played the part of two men, such was his work-rate and it was fitting that he scored  the goal that brought his side level. Alan Pardew's appointment as Newcastle boss was greeted with similar incredulity as Connor's at Wolves, largely due to the United fans' perceived unjustness of predecessor Chris Hughton's sacking by owner Mike Ashley.
Pardew has slowly won over the Toon Army with a highly-impressive start to his reign, which included an 11-game unbeaten run at the start of the season, but last week they were taught a harsh lesson by Tottenham and have now seen two points slip through their fingers. It all began so well for the home side. Yohan Cabaye robbed Berra and teed up Demba Ba for a backheeled shot that was saved and half-cleared, but from Cheick Tiote's scuffed return shot Cisse was able to side-foot into the top corner from inside the box. Then, a long-ball forward was headed out by Doyle but only as far as Gutierrez, who took a touch before hammering a shot from 30 yards into the same top corner Cisse had found 12 minutes earlier.  Even with less than a quarter of the game gone it was difficult to see how Wolves could come back. But come back they did as Connor's first half-time team-talk rejuvinated his side.  After a period of dominance, Matt Jarvis picked up a Doyle pass on the edge of the area and curled a shot that beat Tuim Krul courtesy of a deflection off Danny Simpson. On the hour, Newcastle's Mike Williamson failed to clear a long-ball into the six-yard box and Doyle was on hand to hook home from close range to make it 2-2, which Wolves comfortably held until the end.
Newcastle still have their eye on the top four, but for Connor and Wolves, it is 12 cup finals and counting.

Wolves saw it like this
Two down at the break, Wolves came storming back to hold high flying Newcastle to a draw at St James' Park to get Terry Connor's role as manager off to a fine start.

The new boss made four changes in his first game in charge. In came Ronald Zubar, Karl Henry, Richard Stearman and Christophe Berra, for Roger Johnson and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake who were named as substitutes, virus victim Steven Fletcher and the injured Sebastien Bassong.  Wolves kicked-off defending the end of the ground that housed around 1,500 travelling supporters and there was a chance for Kevin Doyle after just 45 seconds when he forced a low save from Tim Krul after taking a pass from Jamie O'Hara.  But Newcasatle went ahead in the sixth minute through Papiss Cisse. Berra lost possession to Yohan Cabaye and his low centre was backheeled towards goal by Demba Ba. Wayne Hennessey made a fine save but the ball was played back to Cheick Tiote whose 20-yard shot was guided into the net by Papiss Cisse.  Worse was to follow after Hennessey had made a superb save to tip over a 30-yard piledriver from Danny Simpson. The respite proved to be brief as the corner conceded was only half cleared and Jonas Gutierrez ran in to rifle a shot home from 22-yards to give Newcastle a 2-0 advantage after just 18 minutes.  Both Zubar and O'Hara had runs into the home area terminated by a cluster of defenders as Wanderers tried to find a way back into the game.  Doyle was narrowly wide with a glancing header after Matt Jarvis had crossed from the left, and then Krul did well to hold on to a legitimate centre from the winger under pressure from Doyle.  After 36 minutes Doyle worked a shooting position for himself and when his effort was partially blocked by a defender, Jarvis nipped in only for Krul to parry the ball away from close quarters.  Three minutes before the break a low cross from Ba was taken by Ryan Taylor who turned and fired at goal but Stephen Ward was there to block.

Half-Time: Newcastle 2 Wolves 0

The goal Wolves so desperately needed arrived in the 50th minute when Jarvis latched onto a loose ball near the left-hand corner of the home area and curled a shot that took a hefty deflection off Simpson on its way into the far corner of the net.  Cabye drilled a low shot wide from 20-yards and then, at the opposite end, Dave Edwards just failed to get a touch to O'Hara's lofted cross.  Hennessey dashed from his line to save bravely at the feet of Gutierrez who was sprinting into the area, then Krul saved a low drive from Ward that went through a sea of legs before it reached the keeper.  Newcastle made a double switch sending on Hatem Ben Arfa and Danny Guthrie for Ba and Taylor seconds before Wolves drew level in the 66th minute.  O'Hara took a free-kick from wide on the right and although Mike Williamson blocked the striker's first shot, Doyle hooked his foot around the ball to force it home from a couple of yards out.  With 20 minutes remaining, Michael Kightly was sent on in place of O'Hara and in the 85th minute, Stephen Hunt replaced Jarvis. After 87 minutes, Ben Arfa curled a shot uncomfortably close to the far post before Ameobi was yellow carded for a high challenge on Hennessey. He was followed in the book by Berra who stood in the way of Krul's attempted clearance following a Wolves corner.  In the last of the five minutes of added time Ben Arfa went close again with a shot that skimmed the side netting. But Wolves had earned and deserved the point they took from their trip to the north-east.

Sunday 11th February  Wolves 1 (Fletcher 45+1) v West Bromwich Albion 5 (Odemwingie 34, 77, 88, Olsson 64, Andrews 85)(live on sky)

Wolves 1 (Fletcher 45+1) West Bromwich Albion 5 (Odemwingie 34, 77, 88, Olsson 64, Andrews 85)
This match led to the sacking of Mick McCarthy, after the fans surrounded the Directors’ box before the match had finished
The players just gave up in the end, as the third Baggies goal dropped their heads.  Only Wayne had kept Wolves in it for 45 minutes of the first half when a spontaneous display of skill from Fletch, Doyler and Sylvan brought the equaliser out of nothing.  That probably was what deferred the booing until the end of the match.  Steve Morgan wasn't there to hear the South Bank asking if he was watching.   However, Moxey was, and several fans berated him from behind the Director's box.  Moxey's family were taken away by stewards.   In spite of Seb Bassong making his home debut, WBA ran riot for the first half as Wolves tried to cope with a wierd formation with the three strikers, Jarvo being moved to several positions, and Wardy and Foley having trouble coping with the speed of WBA's thought.  Having three strikers (although SEB and Doyler frequently ended up at right back) weakened the midfield and Dave Edwards and Jamie O'Hara just couldn't cover the territory.  Jarvo looked totally out of his depth and only got round the back of the defence once, not bothering even then to find a Gold shirt to centre to, compounding his abysmal contribution to defence.  Little movement for them and no wing outlet meant many passes went astray and they never got control.  For ten minutes in the second half Wolves played as the crowd wanted them to, bouyed by Fletch's goal on half time but the ever so dependable Wayne dropped the ball over the goal line from an Olsson shot - set up by an abysmal clearance by Capt Johnson.   When Odemwingie scored the third is when the heads dropped leading to the inevitable goal from former Wolves midfielder Keith Andrews, who was probably booed less as a Baggie than he had been when in the defensive midfielder role in Gold and Black.  Mick apologised to the fans in interviews after the match, as the capitulation showed it's effect in his demeanour.

A 5-1 humiliation by West Bromwich Albion in the Black Country derby meant that it was a dark day for Wolves and their supporters.  Perhaps fortunate to be level at the break, Wanderers played some of their best football in the opening minutes of the new half before conceding a sloppy second. After going close to an equaliser twice, the home defence then conceded three times in the final quarter-of-an-hour.   The team that finished the game at Queens Park Rangers a week earlier was named to start against The Baggies as Mick McCarthy opted for Kevin Doyle to play in a roving role on the right of midfield.  Albion kicked-off attacking the North Bank end and but for Wayne Hennessey they would have been ahead after just a minute's play.  Kevin Foley slipped as he went cut out James Morrison's low cross and Jerome Thomas ran in at the far post to smash a shot that the keeper blocked at the expense of a corner.  The visitors enjoyed all the early pressure until Matt Jarvis broke away in the eighth minute to force a corner with a deflected shot. Jamie O'Hara took the flag-kick but Steven Reid headed clear from a crowded area.  West Bromwich were soon back on the attack and Paul Scharner was wide with a back heel after he met a cross from Marc-Antoine Fortune.  Peter Odemwingie ran onto a through pass from Reid and hit an angled shot that was blocked by Hennessey. The Nigerian then blasted the loose ball high over the bar. Scharner and Gareth McAuley respectively cleared successive corners from Jarvis and O'Hara, before Hennessey made a fine save from Scharner's volley despite the ball taking a deflection off Roger Johnson. From the corner conceded, taken by Morrison, Steven Fletcher blocked Liam Ridgewell's close range effort at the far post. O'Hara then went into the book for a tackle on Scharner that left the Austrian in need of treatment. After two O'Hara corners were cleared by the Albion defence, Odemwingie gave them the lead in the 34th minute. He cut in from the right and hit a shot that took a hefty deflection off Dave Edwards to wrong-foot Hennessey. From the restart Jarvis took the ball to the by-line but his low cross was cut out and cleared.  In the one minute of added time at the end of the half, Wolves drew level. Foley's throw-in found Fletcher and he was in position to take possession again after a brief exchange between Doyle and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake to hit a shot on the turn for his tenth goal of the season.

Half-Time: Wolves 1 West Bromwich 1

Wolves looked much brighter at the start to the new half and they were inches away from going in front when Fletcher's goalbound volley was deflected narrowly wide by Jonas Olsson.  A miscued Odemwingie shot went out for a throw-in on the far side, and then a minute later the striker laid the ball off for Thomas who blazed his shot high power the bar. Former Molineux midfielder Keith Andrews, an interval replacement for Scharner, headed over from a Morrison corner and then Wolves lost the services of Sebastien Bassong with a hamstring injury. He was replaced by Christophe Berra. Albion regained the lead in the 64th minute following a Morrison corner. Olsson headed the ball on to McAuley whose looping header clipped the post. Johnson's lofted clearance dropped for Olsson to hit a volley that slipped from Hennessey's grasp and trickled over the line. Ben Foster made a tremendous save to thwart Fletcher who looked odds on for a second goal of the afternoon as his header drifted towards the top corner. From O'Hara's corner, in attempting to clear Johnson's header, Youssouf Mulumbu headed against the underside of his own bar before clearing.  Albion broke up field and Foley cleared off the line from Odemwingie who had run unopposed into the home area.  It was 3-1 in the 77th minute as Morrison's corner was helped on in turn by Ridgewell and Olsson for Odemwingie to hook the ball over the line from close quarters.  Five minutes from time Andrews rubbed salt in the wounds with a fourth as he ran in on Morrison's cross - the ball taking a deflection off Johnson on its was past Hennessey.  Foster fumbled an effort from O'Hara but the ball bounced kindly for the keeper to go behind for a corner. But then Odemwingie completed is hat-trick with little difficulty as he converted Morrison's cross to crown a miserable afternoon.

Wolves: Hennessey, Foley, Ward, Edwards (Milijaš 69), Bassong (Berra 61), Johnson (capt), Doyle, Ebanks-Blake, Fletcher, O'Hara, Jarvis. Unused subs: Stearman, Hunt, Hammill, Jonsson, De Vries. Booking: O'Hara (27 - foul).

Albion: Foster, Olsson (capt), Ridgewell, Morrison, Reid, Thomas (Cox 76), Mulumbu, McAuley, Odemwingie (Dorrans 89), Fortune, Scharner (Andrews 45). Unused subs: Tchoyi, Long, Fulop, Jones.

Referee: L. Mason. Attendance: 27,131.

Peter Odemwingie scored a hat-trick as rampant West Brom humiliated Wolves to increase the pressure on manager Mick McCarthy.  The Baggies led through Odemwingie's deflected strike but Steven Fletcher equalised in first-half stoppage time.  Jonas Olsson, Odemwingie, twice, and Keith Andrews scored in 25 second-half minutes to complete the rout.  A sixth loss in seven home games saw Wolves slip into the Premier League relegation zone on goal difference.  No-one could argue with the margin of a victory in an absorbing Black Country derby.  But the manner of Wolves' defeat - against a West Brom side that are now eight points clear of the bottom three - was astonishing. The hosts managed to weather a first-half onslaught and started the second period on level terms, but were ripped apart after the interval by Odemwingie and company. Only superb goalkeeping from Wayne Hennessey had kept them in the game up to that point.  He made a brilliant block inside 90 seconds to deny Jerome Thomas when the ball broke kindly off defender Sebastien Bassong after great work by Odemwingie.  The Wales international pulled off a superb reaction save to keep out Paul Scharner's deflected strike, and then stood firm to beat away Odemwingie's fierce half-volley.  Peter Odemwingie has now scored in each of his last three appearances in the Black Country derby Thomas - like Odemwingie, finding plenty of space on the flank - shot just wide, but Odemwingie finally broke Wolves' stubborn resistance after 34 minutes with a deflected effort from the edge of the box. Wolves, whose claims for a penalty were refused after Gareth McAuley clumsily challenged Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, found themselves level at the break when Fletcher combined brilliantly with Ebanks-Blake and shot first time past Ben Foster.  Wolves enjoyed their only decent, prolonged spell of the match after the interval.  Fletcher almost got on the end of a right-wing Kevin Doyle cross and Fletcher saw a beautifully struck 20-yard effort hit Olsson and go just wide.  But the otherwise excellent Hennessey made a terrible hash of Olsson's half-volley following a goalmouth melee in the 64th minute.   Although Roger Johnson was unlucky not to restore parity for a second time when his fine header was cleared by Youssouf Mulumbu via the underside of the bar, West Brom started to regain their first-half dominance. Odemwingie had a shot cleared off the line by Kevin Foley before scoring his second of the afternoon. He was first to react in the box following great work by debutant Liam Ridgewell and Olsson. Former Wolves midfielder Andrews extended West Brom's advantage with a deflected 18-yard shot, and Nigerian Odemwingie sealed a perfect day for the travelling fans when he slotted past Hennessey after a sweeping counter-attack.

TEAM NEWS

Wolves midfielder Karl Henry misses Sunday's game as he completes a three-game ban, while winger Michael Kightly is still out with a back problem.

Emmanuel Frimpong has returned to Arsenal after damaging his cruciate ligament, while Kevin Foley, Jamie O'Hara and Dave Edwards are doubts.

West Brom duo Keith Andrews and Liam Ridgewell may make their debuts, but Graham Dorrans is doubtful.

Shane Long, who has been troubled by chest and back pain, will be assessed.
MATCH PREVIEW

There will have been contrasting emotions for these old rivals as they prepare for the 146th league Black Country derby.

Wolves could well have been going into Sunday's game without a win in 10 Premier League matches, and must have feared the worse when they fell behind last weekend. The

response and subsequent three points against 10-man Queens Park Rangers visibly lifted everybody at the club, not least Mick McCarthy, who was at least able to celebrate his

100th Premier League game in charge of the club.

I was at Molineux for their last home game and the manner of defeat against Liverpool clearly left him hurting, but the result at Loftus Road will have been a much-needed tonic.

He'll be hoping Sebastien Bassong can help plug what has been a leaky defence and, while Emmanuel Frimpong's long-term injury is a blow, the return to fitness of Jamie O'Hara is

extremely timely. They've lost their last three league games at home and will be eager to put on a derby show and build on last week's victory.

Whilst Wolves have experienced an upturn in fortunes, West Brom go into the game on the back of yet another home defeat after the reverse against Swansea. In fact, they may

even be relieved that the clash is at Molineux given that 18 of their 26 points so far have been earned on their travels. In normal circumstances that kind of away form would have

propelled them nearer the European spots but they've been left to reflect on the disappointments and frustrations of events at the Hawthorns.

This weekend is the first anniversary of Roy Hodgson's arrival to succeed Roberto Di Matteo at West Brom. He inherited a team fourth bottom and in trouble, but steered them to a

comfortable 11th place-finish after a 1-1 draw against Wolves in his first game in charge.

He'll be more aware of the rivalry in this fixture 12 months on, but also of the importance this particular match could hold. Wolves have only won three of the last 20 games against

West Brom in all competitions but a victory on Sunday would suddenly put them within just a point of the Baggies. As ever, this derby won't be for the faint hearted.

Saturday  4th February QPR  1 (Zamora 16) Wolves 2 (Jarvis 46, Doyle 71)

“We’re winning away, we’re winning away; you must be sh*t, we’re winning away”

An inDSC02421 QPR 1 WW 2spired interval substitution by manager Mick McCarthy saw Wolves take three deserved points from their trip to big spending Queens Park Rangers whose cause wasn't helped by the first-half dismissal of Djibril Cisse.   The Wolves boss sent on Kevin Doyle and the Irish internatioDSC02295 Bassongnal provided the cross that saw Matt Jarvis cancelling out Bobby Zamora's opener for the London club, and then he grabbed what proved to be the winning goal.  There were three changes to the starting line-up with new loan signing Sebastien Bassong playing in central defence in place of Christophe Berra who was named as a substitute. Richard Stearman and the fit again Jamie O'Hara were the other introductions with Eggert Jonsson and back injury victim Michael Kightly missing out.

The early stages saw Wayne Hennessey comfortably taking a Cisse shot on the turn before he knocked away a low shot from Bobby Zamora.  For Wolves, Steven Fletcher drove wide from 22-yards before Rangers moved into a 16th minute lead though Zamora who netted from 12-yards after a build-up involving Cisse and Shaun Wright-Phillips.  As Wolves looked to respond, home keeper Paddy Kenny cut out a dangerous Jarvis cross at the near post before the visitors suffered another blow when Emmanuel Frimpong appeared to jar his knee in a centre-circle challenge (With Barton who quickly walked away). He was helped off to be replaced by Sylvan Ebanks-Blake.  Fletcher was a whisker away from equalising with a low free-kick after Roger Johnson had been fouled by Anton Ferdinand.  It was a Johnson tackle on Cisse that led to the French striker being dismissed. Cisse first pushed Johnson and then grabbed him by the neck. The referee booked the Wolves skipper and then brandished the red card to Cisse for violentDSC02235 bye bye Cisse conduct.  O'Hara was yellow carded for a late challenge on Wright-Phillips and he was lectured by the referee shortly afterwards after a foul on Joey Barton.  Bassong went into the book shortly before the break for a foul on Wright-Phillips and, in stoppage time, Jarvis curled a shot well wide after taking a return pass from Foley.

Half-Time: QPR 1 Wolves 0

For the start of the new half, Stearman was withdrawn and Doyle took a place on the right of midfield with Foley dropping to right-back.  And, within a minute, Wolves were level as Doyle's cross fell to Jarvis on the far side of the goal. The winger picked his spot and curled the ball past Kenny.  It was the sDSC02285 Wayne savestart of a purple patch for Wanderers and, in the 49th minute, Fletcher's header smacked against the bar after a cross from Foley.  Three minutes later, Ferdinand cleared Fletcher's shot off the line after the striker had connected with Jarvis's low cross.  Then it was the turn of Ebanks-Blake to try his luck but Kenny managed to turn aside his 25-yard drive.  Adel Taarabt wasn't far away from 20-yards and, within a minute, Ebanks-Blake was as close when he fired at goal fDSC02366 Kenny saves from Doylerom a similar distance at the other end.  It was Ebanks-Blake t h a t p r o v i d ed the cross for Doyle to try a flick header but is effort was wide of the far post.  After Mark Hughes had made a double switch taking off Luke Young and Shaun Derry in favour of Fitz Hall and Armand Traore, it was the visitors that made the breakthrough.   Ebanks-Blake nudged O'Hara's cross into the path of Doyle and he made no mistake in front of the delighted travelling support behind the goal.     Rangers pressed for an equaliser and after Hennessey had got his body behind a low effort from Traore, he pushed a long-range effort from Taarabt out for a corner.  But the keeper saved his best for the 82nd minute when he brilliantly turned over a screamer from Taarabt that had 'goal' written all over it.  Barton screwed a shot wide and Taarabt was off target from 22-yards as Rangers fought in vain for a leveller. But the Wolves defense held on for the three points.

Substitute Kevin Doyle scored the winner and provided an assist as Wolves came from behind to beat 10-man QPR and record their first win in 12 games.   QPR took the lead when debutant Bobby Zamora  drove in before Djibril Cisse saw red after he raised a hand to the neck of defender Roger Johnson.  Wolves owner Steve Morgan then got the response he wanted having lambasted the team  after the 3-0 loss to Liverpool  Matt Jarvis led the charge with his curling shot before Doyle fired home.

Visiting manager Mick McCarthy will leave Loftus Road relieved after his team recorded their first league win in 10 matches, their previous victory having come against Sunderland on 4 December The struggling club had drawn their last three away games 1-1 and were outplayed by Mark Hughes's recently revamped QPR for much of the opening 45 minutes.
Zamora drilled in the opener following great play by Adel Taarabt, Cisse and Shaun Wright-Phillips.  Indeed, the game was one-way traffic until Cisse's sending off.  Johnson slid in late on the France international, who retaliated by grabbing the neck of the defender, leaving referee Mark Clattenburg little choice but to send off the former Liverpool and Sunderland man in only his second game for the club.   McCarthy changed his formation after the break, taking off defender Richard Stearman and bringing on Doyle up front.  And it took only 53 seconds for the substitution to take effect.  Doyle's swinging cross from the right arrived at the feet of Jarvis, who looked up and carefully placed his shot past Paddy Kenny.   Wolves could have had added at least two more goals in the 10 minutes that followed.  Scotland international Steven Fletcher directed his header on to the bar, before his scuffed shot was cleared off the line by Anton Ferdinand.   Goalkeeper Kenny then palmed away Doyle's stinging drive, and the Republic of Ireland striker also flicked a header a yard wide.   Doyle finally broke QPR's resistance when he collected Jamie O'Hara's pass before turning and beating Kenny with his shot.  QPR mounted a late revival led by Taarabt.  The Morocco international twice went close with efforts from distance, forcing Wayne Hennessey to tip over the first before dinking a shot just over the bar.  Wolves looked jittery at the back during the closing moments but managed to hold on for only their second away win in the league this season.

QPR manager Mark Hughes: Cisse red card changed game "If we had 11 v 11 I feel very confident in saying we would have won the game quite comfortably.  "But unfortunately we weren't able to keep 11 on the pitch and we conceded two poor goals in terms of what we could have done prior to the goals going in.  I felt we did really well defensively but then we let ourselves down somewhat, certainly for the first goal and maybe we needed to be a bit stronger in our challenges for the second one."

Wolves manager Mick McCarthy:

"I've been under pressure for the last 20 games as I've only won two of them," he said.  "I was under no more pressure from Wednesday night than I've been for the last 20 games."  On Cisse's red card: "You know me and my sentiments towards football now.  That for me wasn't a sending off when I played and, strangely enough, Roger's tackle wouldn't have been a booking.  But it is and the sending off is because you can't grab anybody by the face because it's not allowed any more.  He was playing well so he's made a mistake and cost his team. And it did because the extra man paid dividends

MATCH PREVIEW

Mick McCarthy is living on borrowed time at Wolves. Two consecutive home defeats have piled on the pressure, and the Molineux misery plumbed new depths with Tuesday night's capitulation to Liverpool.

The boos intensified, the banners were out and even chairman Steve Morgan was incensed enough to deliver a scathing attack on the players in the dressing room. His patience has snapped and it's easy to understand why. Wolves are two points adrift of safety after a run of nine games without a win. In fact, they've only managed two victories since August!

“QPR are on the up and their momentum makes them favourites but Mick McCarthy is nothing if not a fighter”

To be fair, they've been competitive on the road recently, drawing their last three matches in a row, but their frequent failings at home mean they need to start winning away and that won't be easy at Loftus Road.

Of course, Queens Park Rangers made the change at the top only last month. Neil Warnock was dismissed with the club still a point ABOVE the relegation zone. After his achievements last season some saw the decision as ruthless but his successor Mark Hughes has brought an immediate improvement and QPR are climbing the table again.

The club's wealth suggests a rosy future too and they were the biggest domestic spenders as the January transfer window closed. Djibril Cisse made an instant impact with a goal on his debut in Wednesday's draw at Villa. Bobby Zamora will hope to announce his arrival in similar style, while Nedum Onuoha and Taye Taiwo should stiffen the defence.

QPR are on the up in more ways than one and their momentum makes them favourites but Mick McCarthy is nothing if not a fighter. He's picked himself up from the canvas a few times in his career already. Ducking and diving to avoid that knock-out blow, only a fool would write him off just yet.
