Sunday 24th February Wolves 1 Sako 70 Cardiff Campbell 20, 67  2pm ko

How times have changed.  League leaders v relegation fodder.
Three centre backs + wing backs - confused them, and didn't stop the first goal
After the goal - even Matt Murray says the team looks deflated; and ref Attwell has another stinker.
Better second half but SEB goes for miss of the season.

Cardiff City re-established a firm grip on the Championship title race as two Fraizer Campbell headers opened an eight-point lead at the top.
Campbell's close-range header from a long throw set the league leaders on their way, and he rose again after the break for his fifth goal in five games.
Relegation-threatened Wolves responded with Bakary Sako's deflected free-kick.  And then Sylvan Ebanks-Blake missed a late sitter to snatch a draw when he missed from no more than five yards.  Having looked comfortable for so long, Cardiff had to dig deep in the final stages as a more attacking Wolves formation finally brought the home team to life.  Ebanks-Blake seemed certain to equalise 10 minutes from time, but the substitute will be left to rue one of the misses of the season.
Defeat leaves manager Dean Saunders still searching for his first victory after eight games in charge as his side stay in the bottom three.  Cardiff, though, can reflect on an efficient if unspectacular victory; capitalising on Hull's defeat to Bolton on Saturday to stretch clear at the summit once more. The visitors' pressure had been building gradually when Campbell again showed the kind of scoring instinct that Mackay predicted the striker would add to the side. Centre-back Ben Turner used his considerable frame to flick on Aron Gunnarsson's long throw and Campbell could hardly miss from a four yards. Cardiff were competent in possession, streets ahead of their hosts in terms of movement off the ball. The eagerness all over the pitch to receive the ball perfectly illustrated the contrasting pressures on both sides - Cardiff keen to create in search of significant rewards, Wolves afraid to make a mistake in their battle for survival.  For all their passing ability, it was another long Gunnarsson throw that almost doubled the lead after the break.  A defensive header reached the edge of the area where Don Cowie fired back towards goal. Craig Bellamy was quickest to react after Carl Ikeme's save, but the striker's celebrations were ended by an offside flag.  Wolves rallied, creating two inviting opportunities for Kevin Doyle. His first header lacked conviction and was deflected for a corner, and the second went straight at goalkeeper David Marshall.  And just as the home side looked to be gathering momentum, Cardiff doubled the lead on 67 minutes. Bellamy delivered an in-swinging cross from the left, and Campbell again rose unmarked to glance the ball home. That looked game over, but Wolves responded three minutes later when Sako's driven free-kick from the edge of area pierced the defensive wall and deflected past a stranded Marshall.  Sako then delivered a glorious chance for Ebanks-Blake to grab an equaliser after racing 80 yards down the left flank.  With the goal at his mercy, Ebanks-Blake's downward side-foot effort bounced over the bar from no more than five yards out and Cardiff held out to extend their unbeaten run away from home to nine games.

Wolves manager Dean Saunders: "There were a lot of positives to take out of the game but we made two catastrophic mistakes.
"We conceded a goal from a long throw and to make matters worse I had walked the players through that before the game and shown them on the DVD. It was one of those goals that keeps you awake as a manager. Then we conceded from another mistake and I think Carl will be the first to hold his hands up because nine times out of 10 he usually comes and catches that.  But we managed to reply straight away and then Sylvan misses an open goal for two-all."

Cardiff City manager Malky Mackay: "It was never going to be easy here and I have never had an easy game at Wolves.
"They have players with Premier League quality and I was delighted with the way that we played and controlled the game to get our three points. We knew that Wolves would throw caution to the wind after half-time and they did and I thought we handled that well.  I was pleased with the way we saw the game out in the last 10 or 15 minutes."

Tuesday 19th February Barnsley 2 Dagnall 49′Mellis 73′ Wolves  1 Sigurdarson 7′ - in the relegation zone

Barnsley 2 Dagnall 49′Mellis 73′.    Wolves 1 Sigurdarson 7′

In the relegation zone.
In the relegation zone.
Barnsley's unbeaten run continued as they moved out of the Championship relegation zone with a win over struggling Wolves.
The Tykes are unbeaten in nine games since David Flitcroft took over as manager, but were behind early on when Bjorn Sigurdarson scored.   The home side dominated until Chris Dagnall equalised with a header.   Jacob Mellis grabbed the winner on 73 minutes to give Barnsley a sixth straight win in all competitions.

In sharp contrast to Barnsley's revival since the dismissal of Keith Hill, Wolves are still searching for a first win in seven games under Dean Saunders. Out of the bottom three in the Championship, Barnsley's run of nine games without defeat have also seen Flitcroft's side earn an FA Cup quarter final at Premier League champions Manchester City .

The night had started well for Wolves, when Sigurdarson latched onto Bakary Sako's precise pass and rolled the ball home after rounding Barnsley goalkeeper Luke Steele.  But when a shot from Jamie O'Hara that appeared to cross the line after hitting the underside of the bar was not given as a goal, the game swung in the home side's favour.  Marlon Harewood spurned two good chances to equalise before half-time, and Dagnall hit the side-netting seconds before the break, although Sako had fired over and forced Steele into a low save.  Barnsley continued to press after half-time, and they drew level when Dagnall headed in Rory Delap's cross off the post for his eighth goal of the season.  The equaliser spurred Wolves into action, with Sylvan Ebanks-Blake curling a shot wide and Sigurdarson bringing a fine save out of Steele.  But Barnsley forced the winner when O'Grady touched Dagnall's cross into the path of Mellis, who side-footed the ball home via a deflection.

Barnsley manager David Flitcroft:

"I said to the lads at half-time that we just needed one goal. Once we got that, I knew we would win the game. The performance after getting an incredible draw in the FA Cup was superb. That's why the win is incredibly big - we have had get back to earth. On Sunday night, I was dreaming of the Wolves team and Manchester City. I had Sylvan Ebanks-Blake linking up with Sergio Aguero. So I had a sleepless night"

Wolves manager Dean Saunders:

"We just need a bit of luck. Jamie O'Hara's shot might be over the line and we go 2-0 up. We could have scored a few more.  We have had chances and it's just not going for us at the minute.  It's a kick in the teeth. Everyone is trying their best. We just need to get one win and then we can relax when we get it front."

Midfielder Kelvin Etuhu, who broke his nose in the FA Cup win over MK Dons at the weekend, is unlikely to feature for Barnsley.

Jim O'Brien is set to deputise and Tykes boss David Flitcroft should name an otherwise unchanged team.

Wolves left-back Stephen Ward is expected to recover from an illness ahead of the trip to Oakwell.

Centre-back Roger Johnson has completed his three-match suspension and is available for selection.

MATCH FACTS
Head-to-head

• Former Wolves manager Stale Solbakken registered his first win in charge, when beating Barnsley 3-1 in the reverse fixture on 21 August.

• It's 13 years since the Tykes last lost at home to Wolverhampton, winning three and drawing one of their last four second level league clashes at Oakwell,

scoring one goal in each.

• The black-country club did the league double over Barnsley in 1907, the first season they met, and have achieved it another three times since, most

recently in the 2000-01 season.

Barnsley

• The FA Cup quarter-finalists are on a rich vein of form under new boss David Flitcroft, undefeated in eight in all competitions, the last five of which were

won.

• Despite being one of seven clubs on a divisional-low total of nine Championship wins, the Tykes are on the longest current winning streak in the division of

three, and last won four on the spin in December 2011.

• If selected, Stephen Foster will be making his 500th club career appearance.

Wolverhampton Wanderers

• This is a vital six-pointer for Wolves, who lie one place and one point above Barnsley in the relegation zone, having played one more match.

• Dean Saunders is still in search of his first win in charge, and has taken on a side who have not tasted victory in 10 in all competitions (D4, L6), since a 2-1

triumph at Blackpool on 21 December.

• Midfielder Slawomir Peszko could play on his 28th birthday.

NPOWER CHAMPIONSHIP
Venue: Pride Park Stadium Date: Saturday 16 February Kick-off: 15:00 GMT
Wolves keep Rams at bay again - Derby have not beaten Wolves in their last nine games in front of the home faithful, since a 2-0 triumph in May 1993.

Dean Saunders's winless run as Wolves manager extended to six games as the Championship strugglers played out a goalless draw at Derby.
Chances were rare in a largely uneventful encounter that neither helped allay Wolves' relegation fears or strengthen Derby's play-off hopes.  Wolves started brightly, with Jamie O'Hara causing problems.  But Derby finished strongly, going closest with Jamie Ward's free-kick that was denied by keeper Carl Ikeme.  Wolves' position is becoming increasingly precarious and they sit just one place and one point above the relegation zone.  They had the better of the opening exchanges in this encounter, though, with O'Hara particularly lively.  The midfielder saw a shot tipped over by Derby keeper Adam Legzdins, before Danny Batth headed wide.   Derby's first real chance of the game came midway through the half but Ward's free-kick from a promising position was too close to Ikeme.  The second half was a different story however, with the home side looking the most likely to score.  Will Hughes shot over the bar while Connor Sammon nodded a header just wide, but the deadlock could not be broken before the full-time whistle was blown.
Derby manager Nigel Clough: "It's a fair result against a Wolves side battling to stay in the division.  "We don't have too many 0-0s here at Pride Park and in lots of ways it was a good one for us.
"Considering the back four we had out there, we had four centre -halves missing and a first choice left-back out so it's a brilliant clean sheet."
Wolves manager Dean Saunders: "I thought we should have won again.
"But we didn't have that killer touch in front of goal. We made enough chances and got enough balls into the box and we were solid and defended well.
"We did all the basics properly and on another day we win."

DannyBattth-2c
Danny Batth's first league goal saw Wolves snatch a dramatic late point at Molineux and keep the club just above the Championship's relegation zone.  The defender's 92nd-minute header was a setback for Leeds boss Neil Warnock in his latDSC09198e bid for a play-off place.   An own goal by Lee Peltier had put Wolves in front, only for Leeds to go ahead thanks to goals by Luke Varney and a penalty from Ross McCormack.
DSC09056 Danny Batth
But with time ticking down, Batth's late header stole a point for Wolves.  Wolves boss Dean Saunders remains without a win after five games in charge but for much of the second half it appeared the Molineux club were headed for defeat.  It was a typically breathless encounter, but it wasn't until the second half that it sparked into life with a goal from the hosts that owed more to good fortune than design.  It was harsh on Leeds, having largely dominated proceedings, but their captain Peltier turned the ball into his own net to put Wolves in control.   Leeds responded well, levelling thanks to Varney's sweet left-footed strike and snatching the lead when Bakary Sako was adjudged to have hauled down Sam Byram, leaving McCormack to blast hoDannyBattth-0me the penal ty with 12 minut es remai ning. That looke d to be the winne r until Batth had the final say deep into injury time.
Wolves manager Dean Saunders: "If you can't defend goal-kicks, long throws and free-kicks then you will concede goals and I have got to do something about it.  Three managers have got the sack because the team have been conceding goals and I won't be the fourth.  I have been trying for three weeks to get things done but have not been able to get anyone in that we can afford. It is a necessity now.   Obviously we haven't won for a long time but it is coming because that is the best we have played."

Leeds manager Neil Warnock: "The frustration for me is that we have just played Cardiff City and Wolves and we should have had six points and I have got one out of both games.  I want to get into the play-offs and I am disappointed that we are not in the play-offs and games are running out.   "I want to go up. I think I am more frustrated than anybody.   It is all right for the players; they are all young and they can play for years to come."

Wolves 2 Leeds 2 - match report
Danny Batth rescued a deserved point for battling Wolves against Leeds but they slipped closer to the drop zone after making it nine games without a win.

The 22-year-old defender headed home in the second minute of time added on after Luke Varney (64) and Ross McCormack’s 78th minute penalty cancelled out Lee Peltier’s own goal eight minutes after the break.  The result left Wolves fourth bottom and only outside the bottom three on goal difference after wins for all the teams below them – Barnsley, Bristol City and Peterborough - while they are just four points off the bottom of the table.  Wolves are still searching for their first win under Saunders and have taken just two points out of 15 under the new boss – one less than Stale Solbakken took from his final five matches in charge – while their dismal home run continued as they have now won just one of their last 12 in front of their own fans.  But they were good value for their point, carrying their improved performance at Leicester into this game as they created numerous chances.   Kevin Doyle, Bakary Sako, Tongo Doumbia and Jamie O’Hara all wasted chances before Peltier turned home Stephen Ward’s cross to give Wolves the lead.

After the opening goal, Wolves enjoyed their best spell of the game, and Sako and Batth twice went close to extending their lead, the latter chance coming after Varney’s equaliser against the run of play.  But Wolves appeared to concede a soft penalty for Sako’s push on Sam Byram which led to McCormack putting Leeds ahead for the first time and there looked to be no way back for Wolves until Batth struck at the death to complete a man of the match performance on his full home league debut.

Saunders made one change from the side beaten 2-1 at Leicester nine days ago.  Doyle returned at the expense of Bjorn Sigurdarson, who dropped to the bench.  Doyle was up front alongside Sylvan Ebanks-Blake as Wolves reverted to 4-4-2 after playing 4-2-3-1 for the first time under Saunders at Leicester. Unusually, the left-footed O’Hara started at wide right, while Slawomir Peszko, who is a specialist in that position, wasn’t even in the 18.  Wolves took their time to get going in a sluggish start for the home side.   But they did manage to have the first effort on goal when Doyle did well to dispossess Byram and advanced forwards but could only fire straight at keeper Paddy Kenny with his left foot in the 10th minute.  Leeds were quick to respond, Paul Green slamming a low right foot angled drive a few feet wide from a knockdown by former Norwich striker Steve Morison, one of two debutants in the visitors’ line-up with recent Wolves target Stephen Warnock from Villa.   Morison was in the thick of things again in Leeds’ next attack, rising highest in the box and heading narrowly over the bar from Ross McCormack’s free kick.  Wolves were slowly finding their feet and Tongo Doumbia perhaps should have done better when he arrived in the box to get on the end of Doyle’s right-wing centre, only to head over on 16.  Two minutes later, Wolves had the ball in the net after Ebanks-Blake drew Kenny and slotted home only for the flag to go up for offside on the far side after the 11-goal top scorer strayed fractionally ahead of the last man latching onto Doumbia’s through ball.  Wolves forced the first save of the game in the 34th minute when Bakary Sako cut inside, powered past a defender and saw a fierce right-foot shot palmed away for a corner by Kenny.  But in an even half, Leeds hit back with a curling effort from the unmarked McCormack, who curled the ball wide after Wolves failed to cut out Green’s cross from the right.

Wolves started the second half looking far better than they had started the first, and after O’Hara sent a twisting header just wide from Doyle’s cross that went behind him, they took the lead.  Sako threaded Stephen Ward through on the left and his low cross was deflected in off Peltier as Doyle and Ebanks-Blake rushed to the near post.  The goal lifted Wolves and after David Norris was inches away with a rising volley from the edge of the box, the home side had several chances to extend their lead.  Kevin Foley fired straight at Kenny from with a left foot drive from 20 yards, Sako saw a fierce shot palmed away by Kenny and Batth headed just over from Doyle’s cross.  But all their hard work was undone by Varney’s equaliser against the run of play, the former Crewe and Derby man finding the corner of the net with an angled left-foot finish from inside the box after Wolves failed to clear a cross.

After the equaliser, Wolves went close again through Batth, whose header was nodded off the line by Green then Doyle scrambled the rebound wide.  Leeds continued to look dangerous on the break and Varney’s cross-shot was tipped away by Carl Ikeme after Foley gave him far too much room.  Wolves’ chances of a first win under Saunders took a massive blow however when Leeds were awarded a penalty.  Sako got the wrong side of Sam Byram racing for Green’s pass and shoved the 19-year-old right back to the ground for a clear spot kick.  McCormack sent Ikeme the wrong way from the spot and it looked like being yet another defeat for Wolves.

But up stepped Batth in the second minute of time added on to send a downward header past Kenny from O’Hara’s cross.  Kenny played his part, leaving Christophe Berra’s toe-poked shot thinking it was a goal kick when it was deflected for a corner, and he punched away O’Hara’s flag kick.
