Wednesday 29 December Liverpool 0 Wolves 1 (Ward 56) ko 8pm Live on Sky (date change)
It's the same team apart from Jarvo but it's a world of difference! First goal and win at Anfield for 26 years! One of eth stars of that match in 1984 was Ian “Iggy” Cartright. NOT BOTTOM FOR JAN 1...bring on the Hammers! Wardy's first ever goal for Wolves - what a classy take. Sylvan is on fire. Jarvo makes the difference. Walton's unawarded penalty count is about 2-4 as Berra & Kyrgiakos try to relieve each other of their shirts at each goal kick.
as Wolves saw it
Wolves bounced back in style to record a priceless win over Liverpool thanks to a second-half strike from Stephen Ward. Few at a packed Anfield could say that the result wasn't a justified one and the Liverpool fans that stayed behind at the end acknowledged the performance by applauding Wolves off the pitch. Despite the disappointing performance against Wigan three days earlier, Mick McCarthy made just one change to his starting eleven with Matt Jarvis coming in for Dave Edwards who was named as a substitute. The Reds kicked-off defending the Kop end as mist swirled around the ground. After a quiet opening five minutes, Nenad Milijaš got in the first attempt at goal but he was well off target from 20-yards. It was a lot closer at the other end as Raul Meireles collected a deep free-kick from Lucas and found himself with just Wayne Hennessey to beat. But the keeper blocked superbly and Richard Stearman ran across to head clear. From the second of two Jarvis corners, Dirk Kuyt headed out to the edge of the box where Stephen Hunt was waiting to sidefoot a volley inches over the bar. Twice in a three minute spell Glen Johnson came to Liverpool's rescue. He headed behind as Hunt ran in at the far post after Ward had helped on a Kevin Foley centre, and then he hooked clear as he and Ward closed in on a dangerous low cross from Sylvan Ebanks-Blake. George Elokobi was shown the yellow card after he had pulled back Lucas, and, after a spell of Liverpool pressure, Paul Konchesky was well wide with a shot from distance. Then David Ngog fired straight into the midriff of Hennessey in front of a subdued Anfield crowd. Chances in the opening half were few and far between but Wolves had more than held their own against their illustrious hosts.
Half-Time: Liverpool 0 Wolves 0
Seconds after the restart Wolves won a corner but Pepe Reina easily claimed Jarvis's kick. The ball was cleared upfield to Kuyt and the Dutchman's cross was headed towards goal by Ngog but Hennessey easily gathered under the bar. Ngog had an easier chance in the 50th minute after Johnson found him with a short cross just six-yards out but the striker was well wide as he took a stab at the ball. Reina had to throw himself to his left to take a shot on the turn from Ronald Zubar after a low centre fromEbanks-Blake who then headed over following a cross from Elokobi. It was Ebanks-Blake who was instrumental in Wolves moving into a fully deserved 56th minute lead. His precision through ball found Ward who neatly clipped a low shot past Reina just inside the far post. But for a great block by Johnson, it would have been two in the 64th minute. The home defence failed to clear and the ball bounced invitingly for Hunt who looked odds on to score until the England defender threw himself in front of it to deflect it away. Ward needed treatment after a Martin Skrtel challenge that went unpunished and, having already switched Ngog for Ryan Babel, Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson made two further changes sending Joe Cole and Fabio Aurelio on for Meireles and Konchesky respectively. Johnson went into the book for a foul on Jarvis before Steven Fletcher replaced the industrious Ward for the closing minutes. A Lucas foul on Ebanks-Blake led to a free-kick to the left of the home area. Jarvis played a short ball to Ebanks-Blake but his cross was too high for Fletcher who ran in at the far post. Skrtel did beat Hennessy following a free-kick from Steven Gerrard but the home cheers were soon stifled by the lineman's flag for offside. There were four added minutes at the end but the Wanderers defence was in no mood to let things slip at that stage and they held on comfortably. TEAM NEWS
Liverpool welcome back skipper Steven Gerrard after more than six weeks out with a hamstring injury.
Daniel Agger is also available after injury, while Fernando Torres returns after being rested in Europe.
Wolves have no fresh injury concerns but continue to be without several first-team regulars.
Kevin Doyle and Jody Craddock both have thigh injuries, while Michael Mancienne and Karl Henry are still sidelined with knee problems.
MATCH PREVIEW
It will be 27 years next month since Wolves last recorded a win over Liverpool, little-known striker Steve Mardenborough scoring the only goal of his Wolves career to shock
Anfield in January 1984. Both Mark Lawrenson and Alan Hansen played in that match.
There's only one way left for us to go now... and that is up. There are plenty of games left and who's to say we can't go and win at Liverpool?
Mick McCarthy, Wolves manager
As with that game, Wolves will kick-off at the bottom of the table following their disappointing home defeat to fellow relegation candidates Wigan on Boxing Day. It was a
loss that proved hard to stomach for the club's fans and left Mick McCarthy unable to explain his side's defending.
Liverpool were also frustrated on Sunday after their game at Blackpool was called off due to a frozen pitch. It has left the Reds facing the prospect of eight games in 29 days,
which could even become nine should their FA Cup tie at Manchester United go to a replay.
Roy Hodgson's side are beginning to show the dominant home form that Fulham demonstrated under him. The Reds have won four straight league games at Anfield, and
conceded just once in the process, a platform for Hodgson's side to build upon for the second half of the season.
The Liverpool boss stopped short of making any rash promises for the New Year but insists that "everything is possible in football", including putting pressure on the top four
if his team can put a run of results together. Hodgson is particularly buoyed by the return of several of his star players, and is hopeful several of the club's high-earning fringe
players will be moved on in January.
MATCH FACTS

• Liverpool have won 13 of their last 14 home league matches against Wolves. They have kept nine clean sheets in the last 11.
• Wolves have not scored in 270 Premier League minutes against Liverpool.
Liverpool
• The Reds have not conceded in 309 Premier League minutes at Anfield.
• Roy Hodgson is yet to beat Wolves as a Premier League manager. His Fulham side drew 0-0 at Craven Cottage during April and lost 2-1 at Molineux in September 2009.
• Liverpool are five points down on this stage last season, when they went on to finish seventh.
Wolves
• Wolves are yet to win a league game away from Molineux since March - run of 11 matches without victory.
• Mick McCarthy's men have the worst away record in the league this term, having picked up a solitary point on their travels. That point came at nearby Everton in Wolves'
opening away fixture.
• Wolves have conceded 32 league goals this campaign, the equal worst in the division alongside West Ham.
Boxing Day Sunday 26 December Wolves 1 (Fletcher 87) Wigan 2 (Rodallega 9, Cleverley 20) Wolves go bottom
Dean-ied another penalty as Mike Dean, as usual, makes these important decisions against us. Did it matter? The defence was so bad against the worst attack in the Premier Leagu that it probably didn't. So, why keep our best player on the bench when their left back was so poor that he could easily have been sent off. Tempo was upped when Matty Jarvis cane on - too late. Hardest worker for us - Stephen Ward but litttle service to him and Sylvan had to chase back so far to even get touches on the ball. So bad that when Wayne took a free kick from half way in our half it was the first "shot on goal" for ages. Again the two centre backs were left standimg for the opposition goals, while Zubar's late clearance from right back went out for a throw in level on the opposite side of the pitchwith where he kicked it from
The on pitch performance, with a chance to climb out of the relegation zone but leaving Wolves bottom of the league, was an insult to those who had worked so hard to make the stadium accessible and to the fans who'd travelled through temperatures worse than -10 and with no main line train services. The Wolves site said "Wolves supporters attending Sunday's game with Wigan are being asked for their patience and understanding due to issues relating to the freezing weather conditions.". They should have asked for the patience and understanding over an unacceptably bad performance. No doubt the club will be bolstered by the addition of another couple of injury prone players well versed in what relegation feels like as we return to the Championship and our best couple of players depart. Not many will be in demand!
By the time the stadium announcer said that the attendance was 26,901, it was already down to 13,000 with the earliest walkout since the 4:3 comeback over Leicester. And as the caller from the North Bank to the goal zone said of his letter from Wolves about his relocation from the stand if the rebuilding goes ahead – he might just as well be relocated away from the ground if this is what is served up.
Wolves 1 (Fletcher 87) Wigan 2 (Rodallega 9, Cleverley 20)
There was little Christmas cheer at Molineux as Wolves spurned the chance of moving out of the relegation zone and instead slipped to the bottom of the Premier League
following a disappointing home defeat against Wigan Athletic. Mick McCarthy named an unchanged starting line up with the fit again Matt Jarvis taking a place on the bench.
Wigan kicked-off attacking the North Bank end and they could have been ahead after less than two minutes but James McArthur directed his free header tamely into the arms
of Wayne Hennessey. Wolves were soon threatening and after a Stephen Hunt corner was cleared, Antolin Alcaraz had to hook away a dangerous cross from Sylvan
Ebanks- Blake. But it was the visitors that made the breakthrough as they took a ninth minute lead. Ben Watson's corner was headed clear by Stephen Ward but Tom
Cleverley returned the ball into the box finding Hugo Rodallega who netted with a shot on the turn as he fell. Only a fine save from Ali Al Habsi prevented an instant
response from Wanderers. Hunt fired a free-kick across the face of goal and Christophe Berra connected as he ran in only for Al Habsi to smother the ball on the line.
Ebanks-Blake volleyed over the angle after a George Elokobi long throw had been helped on, and Hennessey had to sprint from his line to save at Rodallega's feet after the
striker had run onto McArthur's through ball. But Wigan moved into a two goal advantage in the 20th minute. Rodallega picked out Cleverley and he drilled home a low shot
through the legs of the advancing Hennessey. Wolves should have had a penalty in the 23rd minute when Steve Gohouri clearly fouled Ward as he tried to reach Hunt's
free-kick, but the appeals were ignored. Moments later a piece of determination from Dave Edwards saw the midfielder delivering a cross that Hunt headed over at the far
post. Luck was against Wolves ten minutes before the break when they were awarded a free-kick 20 yards out. Nenad Milijaš took the kick and the ball took a deflection as
it went through the wall completely wrongfooting Al Habsi. The ball was heading for the far corner but as it bounced the keeper lifted his foot and, although he was lying
face down, he managed to push it away. In the minutes leading up to the break, Watson and then Alcaraz were booked - both for fouls on Ward. Alcaraz also survived a
penalty appeal for hand ball as he attempted to clear.
Half-Time; Wolves 0 Wigan 2
Shortly after the resumption a long throw from Elokobi was the prelude to a scramble in the Wigan area but the ball wouldn't drop kindly for Ebanks-Blake and it was
eventually booted clear. After 55 minutes Jarvis went on in place of Edwards and he was soon delivering a cross that Ronnie Stam headed behind at the far post before Hunt
could get a touch. Wigan threatened through Cleverley whose rising drive was claimed by Hennessey before Charles N'Zogbia drifted past three defenders as he worked a
shooting position for himself only to be fouled, virtually on the 18-yard line, by Ronald Zubar who was booked. Watson was too high with the resultant free-kick.
Stephen Fletcher replaced Elokobi for the final 20 minutes shortly before Cleverley was booked for clattering into Jarvis. Fletcher was off target with an overhead kick but he gave Wolves a glimmer of hope in the 87th minute when he drove the ball home after Ebanks-Blake had helped on Jarvis's centre. There were three minutes of added time but it was Wigan that almost added to their tally as a close range effort from Mohamed Diame was deflected wide. The crowd lifted the noise levels for a Hunt corner but the Latics defence held form and quickly cleared the danger.

Sunday 12 December Wolves 1 (Hunt 45) Birmingham City 0 ko 1.30pm ko
A battling performance, full of skillful touches with Wardy and SEB leading the line and another week where only the opposition goalie stood between Wolves and a cricket score while Wayne kept our first clean sheet of the season. Two tackles - one by Dave Edwards and the other by SEB epitomised the team spirit. Christophe literally hit the post but played on through the pain barrier and Alex McLeish recognised that Wolves were the better team. Hilite for many Wolves fans was Kevin Phillips missing an open goal when clear in the six yard box. A goal on the stroke of half-time from Stephen Hunt, against local rivals Birmingham City, was enough to secure a well deserved fourth win of the season for Wolves. And yet the injury crisis at Molineux had escalated further with the news that four players that had started in the last game, against Blackburn Rovers, were ruled out. Kevin Doyle, Michael Mancienne, Steven Mouyokolo and Matt Jarvis were out with Hunt, Richard Stearman, Sylvan Ebanks-Blake and Dave Edwards coming in. Mick McCarthy opted for a 4-4-2 formation with Stephen Ward partnering Ebanks-Blake up front. Five members of the club's development squad were named as substitutes. Blues kicked-off attacking the North Bank end and after just over a minute they had a man in the book after Roger Johnson had tripped Edwards who was running onto Ebanks-Blake's clever pass down the line. Seconds later Christophe Berra had to clear a short, low cross from Cameron Jerome after the City striker had taken the ball to the by-line. A smart piece of work from Ward on the right was followed by a pinpoint cross that picked out Edwards whose header forced a full length diving save from Ben Foster. In the 11th minute Ward flicked on an Edwards cross to Hunt inside the six-yard box but he was thwarted by Foster who had spotted the danger and blocked at point blank range. Wolves were doing most of the pressing but it took a timely tackle from Ronald Zubar to dispossess Nikola Zigic as he prepared to shoot. Foster made another good save, this time to deny Ebanks-Blake who had controlled a low cross from Hunt and hit a fierce shot on the turn. Jerome was shown the yellow card after he had clattered into Stearman who was steadying himself to head clear. Ward volleyed over the angle from 22-yards and then Foster beat the ball away after Ebanks-Blake had smashed an Edwards cross towards goal. Stearman went into the book for a foul on Jerome in the centre circle shortly before Wolves took a deserved lead as the game was about to enter stoppage time. Ebanks-Blake delivered a superb cross from the right and Hunt ran in at the near post to rocket a half volley past Foster (pictured).
Half-Time: Wolves 1 Blues 0
It could have been two inside two minutes of the restart but Edwards miscued his header from Ward's cross and the ball rolled wide. Zigic was the victim of a ridiculous yellow card after Berra had run into him with the Birmingham man merely waiting for the ball to drop. Foster dived to take a 25-yard free- kick from Nenad Milijaš after Ward had been fouled by Scott Dann, then the keeper had to move smartly to take an edge of the area effort fr om Zubar. Berra headed over after a Hunt corner before the visitors made a double switch with Jean Beausejour and Craig Gardner the respective replacements for Zigic and Keith Fahey. With 64 minutes gone Foster saved his side again after a Hunt corner. Berra headed the ball into the floor and as it bounced Milijaš headed goalwards only for Foster to pull off a great reflex save. Midway through the half Berra was hurt when he tried to meet a cross from Hunt but collided with the far post. The defender was able to resume after treatment but he looked to be in considerable pain. Ebanks-Blake fired over a low cross which was helped on by Ward who hooked the ball into the six-yard box but Foster was there at the near post to cut out the danger. There were loud boos as Wolves' nemesis Kevin Phillips ran on to replace Lee Bowyer for the final 20 minutes. Kevin Foley became the second home player to go into the book after he had pulled back Gardner, and there was a moment of danger when Milijaš lost possession to Gardener who fed Dann. His cross went dangerously across the face of goal with Jerome getting a touch but failing to divert the ball towards goal. Steven Fletcher was sent on for Edwards for the final few minutes and within seconds of his introduction the Scottish striker was fouled by Stephen Carr right on the left hand side o f the Birmingham box. Johnson cleared Hunt's free-kick. In the 89th minute the home supporters had their hearts in their mouths as the unmarked Phillips jumped to meet Gardner's cross but his header was yards wide of the target. In stoppage time a frustrated Sebastian Larsson was booked for dissent as Wolves held out in the four added minutes with few problems. It was the first League victory in ten attempts against Blues for the Molineux men and the first clean sheet of the season with Wayne Hennessey not required to make a direct save.
Wolves: Hennessey, Zubar, Elokobi, Edwards (Fletcher 84), Berra, Stearman, Foley (capt), Milijaš, Ebanks-Blake, Ward, Hunt. Unused subs: Hahnemann, Mujangi-Bia, Ebanks-Landell, Winnall, Rooney, Doherty. Bookings: Stearman (40 - foul), Foley (78 - foul).

Referee: M. Atkinson. Attendance: 25,150.
Wolves manager Mick McCarthy: "There's no doubt we deserved the victory. I would say their keeper was their star player, and I don't think Wayne Hennessey had too many saves to make. "We deserved the victory, it was a great clean sheet, and it helps everybody to feel better about themselves. "I've spoken about the spirit in the camp, how it's good and optimistic, and I think it showed. "With all the things that have gone wrong, it was set up for us to get beat, but the players weren't going to let it happen. They've been terrific."
Birmingham manager Alex McLeish: "We didn't turn up at all for the first 60 minutes. We were outfought and then had a go. We need to start games the way we finish them. "There were some boosts for us with Kevin Doyle and Matt Jarvis not playing for them, but they had their backs to the wall and they bullied us. "Wolves had a cause, and maybe we were complacent because they had some big players missing. "I felt there was a goal in it for us, and there's no finer man to bring on than Kevin Phillips, but it wasn't to be and Wolves deserved the victory."

Saturday4 December Blackburn Rovers 3 (Dunn 29, Emerton 43, Nelsen 55) Wolves 0
5 excellent saves by ex England Paul Robinson, plus two saves by the bar and post avoided us getting any points, while they scored from a corner which should have been a foul on Berra, and then an offside goal.....Long ball to an offside Jason Roberts and we went two down. Lino useless. Nearly as bad as the defence which was pretty woeful for all the goals. Zube & Mouyokolo started for Wolves as Christophe Berra retunred. Zubes hit the crossbar and the post in the 6th minute, after Wardy had hit the post while Robinson makes saves from Ward, and Jarvo. Blackburn woke up after the first five minutes and Wayne has to make a few saves but no chance with the goals. Ref Webb gave a corner that wasn't and, of course, Rovers' Dunn scores from it just as the Wolves World commentary started after 30 minutes...no idea the people who run the service - just connected to Beacon Gold oldies show. Maybe the music was better after all. Nenad shot from 35 yards and forced a good parry from Robinson and so it went on.
Blackburn Rovers 3 (Dunn 29, Emerton 43, Nelsen 55) Wolves 0 and Wolves go bottom on goal difference from West Ham for 24 hours until the Black Cats beat them. We’re 19th on goals scored
After injury decimated Wolves had enjoyed a bright start to the game, Blackburn Rovers then took control and forged into a three goal lead inside an hour. The defeat meant that Wanderers slipped to the bottom of the Premier League table after failing once again to break their away duck. Christophe Berra returned from suspension in place of Richard Stearman and Steven Mouyokolo came in to partner the Scot at the back. Dave Jones was ruled out with a foot injury as Mick McCarthy shuffled his pack moving George Elokobi from central defence to full back, and Stephen Ward into central midfield from his normal left sided role. Rovers kicked off attacking the Darwen end of Ewood Park that housed over 2,000 travelling supporters. With just over a minute gone Matt Jarvis cut into the box from the left and tested Paul Robinson with a rising drive that the keeper punched away. A Jarvis corner was cleared before the luck that typified Wanderers' season struck in the fifth minute as the home woodwork was struck three times in just a few seconds. Ward ran onto a low cross from Jarvis and hit an angled shot that Robinson touched onto the base of the post. The ball ran to Kevin Foley who quickly slipped it to Ronald Zubar who hit a cross-shot that hit the underside of the bar and ricocheted against the inside of the post before bouncing clear. Moments later, Wayne Hennessey had to claw away a dangerous cross from El Hadji Diouf. In the 19th minute David Dunn beat the offside trap and sprinted towards the Wolves box. It looked ominous for the visitors until Zubar raced back and dispossessed the Irish international with a great tackle. Rovers took the lead in the 29th minute following a Morten Gamst Pedersen corner. The ball flew to the far side of goal and when Ryan Nelsen nodded it back into the middle, Dunn was there to head home with the ball having crossed the line before it was hooked clear by Kevin Doyle. Nenad Milijaš was close to giving Wolves an instant response but Robinson beat away the Serb's 30-yard drive and Doyle was penalised for a foul on Michel Salgado as the pair went for the loose ball. Berra wasn't far away from his own net with a clearing header after Pedersen had planted a deep free-kick into the Wolves area but Rovers scored again two minutes before the break. One time Molineux striker Jason Roberts broke clear and held off a challenge from Mouyokolo before flicking the ball to Brett Emerton who rifled it into the roof of the net from just inside the area.
Half-Time: Rovers 2 Wolves 0
Sylvan Ebanks-Blake replaced Mouyokolo at the start of the new half as Wolves switched to a 4-4-2 formation with Zubar moving into the middle and Foley to right-back. Ebanks-Blake soon won a corner but Jarvis's flag-kick was easily cleared. Six minutes into the half there were further changes with Rovers substituting Dunn with Mame Biram Diouf and, for Wolves, Stephen Hunt took the place of Michael Mancienne. The afternoon grew worse for Wanderers as Blackburn went three up in the 55th minute. Pedersen curled over a free-kick from the left and Nelsen had little trouble in prodding the ball into the net. Foley looked like he might reduce the deficit as he charged onto an Elokobi centre but a defender managed to block and then Hunt flicked a Jarvis corner across the face of goal with no-one able to get a touch. Berra was booked after a challenge on Mame Diouf 25-yards out but Gamst Pedersen's free kick was cleared. Midway through the half Phil Jones broke clear and looked odds on for a fourth until Hennessey blocked with his legs and then Elokobi hit a scorching shot that drew an excellent save from Robinson. It was Robinson again, in the 78th minute, this time turning aside a volley from Hunt after a cross from Ward, as Wolves continued to try and salvage something from the game. Hunt was booked for a late challenge on Gael Givet, and in stoppage time he became another victim of Robinson's agility. The keeper somehow managed to push Ebanks-Blake's shot on the turn aside, and then he pawed away Hunt's effort that was arrowing towards the top corner.
