For two hours after the Villa match we were top again

Sunday 21st August Aston Villa 0 Wolves 0 12:05 on Sky
A fairly even first half, perhaps even shaded by Wolves in terms of real chances. The best, a soft header from Hunt who had crept round the back was easy enough for Given. But Jarvo and Hunty never really casued any problems - Jarvo should have been roasting the young full back Hurd, but instead Hurd was the Sky man of the match. Our's clearly was Wayne Hennessey with three excellent saves in front of a defence worried by N'zogbia and Agbonlahor - Stears doing a really good job in containment on one side and Wardy on the other. In the second half Villa camped in our half until Mick's substitutions managed to halt a very strong Villa 20 minutes - with neither winger getting into the game they were both given the hook. Kevin Foley and George Elokobi shored things up and we finished the stronger side, and top of the League until Chelsea's late penalty against Norwich
Wolves.co.uk reported
Wolves extended their early season unbeaten run after taking a point from local rivals Aston Villa in a hard fought out tussle at Villa Park. Wanderers kicked off attacking the Holte End of the ground and that is where the action was centred after five minutes after Kevin Doyle won a corner off Stiliyan Petrov. Stephen Hunt's first flag kick was booted behind by Petrov for another which this time was cleared upfield. Fabian Delph was shown an early yellow card after he had clattered into Hunt who took the resultant free-kick which was turned behind by Shay Given. Petrov drove a low shot wide from 20-yards and then Wayne Hennessey punched away a Charles N'Zogbia corner. Chris Herd collided head first with the post as he ran in, but he was able to continue after treatment. On 20 minutes Stephen Ward went on a good run before delivering a cross that Hunt headed down into the floor with Given fumbling the ball behind as it bounced. N'Zogbia was way off target with a long range effort but Emile Heskey was literally inches away from giving Villa the lead as he slid in on Gabby Agbonlahor's low centre at the near post. After a build- up involving Matt Jarvis and Steven Fletcher, Jamie O'Hara scooped the ball over the angle from 20-yards before Fletcher needed treatment after colliding with Richard Dunne as the pair went for a Ward cross. Petrov beat the offside trap on the left and hit a low cross that Hennessey cut out as Heskey slid in. The keeper took a knock but he was soon able to resume. In stoppage time, O'Hara was booked for pulling back Petrov and Ward made a timely interception to concede a corner as Heskey was lining up a shot.
Half-Time: Villa 0 Wolves 0
Five minutes after the resumption, Hennessey turned away an angled effort from N'Zogbia with Hunt completing the clearance. Hennessey had little difficulty in gathering a free-kick from Delph before Agbonlahor twice, in a matter of a few seconds, threatened the Wolves goal. The striker's attempted angled drive was deflected behind for a corner and then his cross was headed powerfully towards goal by Herd with Hennessey having to touch the ball over. Hennessey then had to cut out a low centre from Agbonlahor before Karl Henry went into the book after he had held back Petrov. With the half at its midway point, Mick McCarthy made a double switch sending George Elokobi and Kevin Foley on for Jarvis and Hunt. Elokobi slotted in at left-back with Ward pushing up into left midfield. Richard Stearman became the third visiting played to go into the book when he tripped Agbonlahor. In the 81st minute, Darren Bent lashed a dangerous cross from the right that went straight through the six-yard box with no-one able to get a touch. Three minutes from the end, Bent headed onto the roof of the net after a good delivery from substitute Barry Bannan. Wolves did most of the pressing in the last moments of the game, which included three minutes of stoppage time. But in the end, neither side could break the stalemate.

TEAM NEWS
Aston Villa strikers Gabby Agbonlahor and Emile Heskey have been declared fit after suffering minor injuries against Blackburn. With right-back Luke Young set to move to QPR, youngsters Chris Herd and Eric Lichaj are vying to replace him. Wolves are expected to be unchanged from the side that beat Fulham in their last Premier League game. Sylvan Ebanks-Blake could be out for a month with a knee injury sustained against Northampton.
MATCH PREVIEW
When was the last time these two fought out a derby with both sides in the top four? It's been a good start for the pair of them. It's 31 years since Wolves won three away top-flight games in a row. It wouldn't unduly surprise me if they emulated that feat. Alex McLeish and Mick McCarthy are real down-to-earth football people. They both dislike the hype and politics that flush through the Premier League circus. They both simply love winning matches. Wolves' victory at Villa Park last season was their first there in 31 years, ending an unbeaten Villa run of 17 league and cup games against them. Another victory would give Wanderers three Premier League wins in a row for the first time. But don't forget Villa have lost just one of their last 10 league games. Darren Bent has scored seven in those matches. Gabby Agbonlahor looks fitter and sharper than he did last season and with Charlie N'Zogbia's pace, the home side will press the Wolves defence. This one is very tight to call. It's 31 years since Wolves won three away top-flight games in a row. It wouldn't unduly surprise me if they emulated that feat. I can certainly see the diligence of Kevin Doyle paying off with a goal but also N'Zogbia creating one for Bent. So I'll go for a 1-1 draw. MATCH FACTS
Head-to-head Wolves ended a 31-year winless streak in this fixture courtesy of Matt Jarvis's winner at Villa Park in March. It was their first clean sheet in 12 league visits to Villa Park since 1963. Villa had been unbeaten in their previous 17 league and cup matches (W13, D4) against Wolves. These two clubs met on the opening day of the inaugural Football League season in 1888. That game ended 1-1 at Molineux.
Aston Villa Villa have only lost one of their last 10 league matches (W5, D4, L1). They are unbeaten in their five home league games (W3, D2) since the defeat by Wolves in March. The Villans dropped 26 points from winning positions last season, more than any other Premier League side. Darren Bent has scored seven goals in his last 10 league appearances. Wolves
Wolves have won four of their last five league matches. They were briefly top of the table last Sunday for the first time since 29 September 1962. Mick McCarthy's side only picked up 12 points away from home last season - only Bolton had a worse record. The Black Country side are targeting a third straight away victory in the top flight for the first time since winning at Villa in March 1980. They went on to claim five consecutive successes on the road in that season. Karl Henry could make his 250th career league start, while Kevin Foley is poised for his 150th league appearance for Wolves.
Tuesday 23rd August Northampton 0 Wolves 4 (Ebanks-Blake 31, 76, Milijaś 37, Vokes 88) Carling Cup 2nd Round
Wolves cruised to victory at the Sixfields Stadium netting twice in each half against plucky League Two opponents Northampton Town in an entertaining Carling Cup tie. There were first team debuts for Dorus De Vries and Academy graduate Jamie Reckord, and a second senior start for Matt Doherty as Mick McCarthy made 11 changes to his team following the victory over Fulham two days earlier. Northampton kicked-off attacking the end of the ground that was packed with over a thousand visiting supporters. After just three minutes Aaron Davies saw his volley deflected behind by Sam Vokes. But Wolves were looking good when they went forward and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake went close when he raced, unopposed, onto Adam Hammill's through ball. But Town keeper Sam Walker took the sting off the striker's shot and Paul Turnbull raced back to clear the ball as it trickled towards the line. Nenad Milijaś drove a low shot narrowly wide before a long throw from Ben Tozer had the Wolves defence in trouble. Byron Webster flicked the ball on to Adebayo Akinfenwa who lifted it over the bar from close in as he was challenged by Jody Craddock. Hammill had a shot blocked by Ashley Corker and Walker caught the ball when Michael Kightly took the resultant corner. Ebanks-Blake lashed a hard, low centre across the face of goal with no-one able to get a touch, but the striker was celebrating in the 31st minute after giving Wanderers the lead. Kevin Foley spotted him on the far side of the box and his pinpoint cross was controlled by Ebanks-Blake who then thumped the ball into the far corner of the net. Three minutes later Ebanks-Blake won a three man chase after beating Walker and Webster to the ball but he was only able to fire into the side netting from wide on the left. De Vries took another of Tozer's long throws and immediately pumped the ball upfield into the path of Hammill who chased it to the by-line and crossed to Ebanks-Blake who was crowded out before he could get his shot in. But Davies's foul on Hammill 25-yards out earned the Northampton man a booking and saw Wolves move into a 2-0 lead in the 36th minute. Milijaś took the free-kick and the ball flew over the wall and beyond the outstretched arms of Walker. Vokes was inches over the bar with a powerful header from Hammill's cross and Akinfenwa was close at the other end as he fired wide when challenged by George Elokobi. Two minutes before the break De Vries made a fine save at his near post as Young attempted to scoop in a low centre from Jake Robinson.
Half-Time: Town 0 Wolves 2
De Vries was called into action again soon after the restart as he smothered a deflected shot from Young that travelled through a forest of legs. Then Kightly went close with a snapshot that was only just wide of the mark with Walker looking on helplessly. Robinson wasn't far away with a first time effort before Reckord joined the attack and almost marked his debut with a goal as he confidently took control of the ball in the home area and unleashed an angled shot that cannoned to safety off a defender. Hammill took a return pass from Kightly after a flowing Wolves move and the former Barnsley winger looked odds on to score until Webster made a superb last gasp tackle. But in the 76th minute Ebanks-Blake powered home a header after a Kightly centre to confirm Wanderers passage into the next round of the competition. The striker was hurt in the incident and he was replaced shortly afterwards by Leigh Griffiths. When Anthony Forde and David Davis came on for Hammill and Foley five minutes later, it meant that all three Wolves substitutes were making their senior bow for the club. Two minutes from time Vokes put the icing on the cake when he sidefooted a Doherty centre into the roof of the net.

Sunday 21st August Wolves 2 (Doyle 42, Jarvis 45) Fulham 0 Top of the table for two hours!
So, Wolves go top albeit for two hours and Match of the Day sing our praises with a montage. Before the match a tribute to Frank Munro was made. Our thoughts are with Naomi and with Frank’s sons. Frank, a long time friend of London Wolves, died aged 63 last Tuesday evening after suffering respiratory problems on Sunday. Frank had also been unable to join us for the 45th Anniversary dinner because of such problems. Waggy and Lofty were at his bedside when he died. We are told that Frank was in a happy mood on the Sunday having just received a ticket for the Fulham match and was really looking forward to it. Big Frank made a mark on Wolves playing for the Washington Whips (aka Aberdeen) playing as a centre forward. Doog recommended that Ronnie Allen bought him and he was at Molineux within six months. I was talking with Frank about the match earlier this year, and said, “of course you scored didn’t you” – “I scored a hat-trick” Frank growled back! “Don’t you forget it!” Wolves held a minute’s applause before the vict ory over Fulham with John Richards, Lofty, Waggy, Steve Daley, Mel Eves, Derek Parkin, Gerry Taylor, John McAlle and Geoff Palmer lining the touchline and who are Pictured on twitpic at http://twitpic.com/69mumu with the caption - This lot could play a bit as well!!!! Roger Brown of Fulham’s death was also commemorated.
Frank's funeral’s on Wednesday, August 24, at St Anthonys RC Church in Bee Lane, Fordhouses, at 3.15pm. Supporters are invited to attend the church for the service to remember the legendary defender. Family and friends only are invited to a service at Bushbury Crematorium's West Chapel at 4pm. Donations to Compton Hospice, Frank's favourite charity, are welcomed. Flowers are also welcome.
Frank is pictured wearing Denis Law’s shirt after receiving his League Cup winner’s tankard at Wembley March 1974.
Before the match Stuart, Peter Abbott, Dave Slape and Peter B presented Matt Jarvis with London Wolves 35th annual Player of the Season award.
While on the Fulham match a few records were broken – Karl Henry’s 200th, Mick McCarthy’s 100th win at Wolves (or 99th according to the beeb), and, for the first time ever, the South Bank sung the chorus of “Oh Lord Stephen Ward” after his brilliant clearances 10 minutes from the end, the second when Dempsey had an open goal. And Wolves were top for a couple of hours for the first time ever in the Premier League and quite some while since we were top of the first. Although the North Bank choir has been distributed around the SBLower, Upper and elsewhere, it did disturb the South Bank choir briefly, but the news from Jez is that the new North Bank should be in full swing for the QPR match with some testing for the Spurs match. If you haven’t seen the phoenix look here – time lapse video http://www.molineuxpride.co.uk/wt/home
The match itself started with the longest first half ever - or so it seemed - until Doyler chased down Senderos to win a great attempt at goal. In the 42nd he stole a yard on Senderos swivelled and hit the roof of the net. 3 minutes later Captain Roger Johnson nearly scored his first goal but the rebound off the post gave our player of the season Matt Jarvis time to react and score. A few little scares but Wayne was rarely troubled, apart from needing Wardy’s help late on
First-half strikes from Kevin Doyle and Matt Jarvis steered Wolves towards a thoroughly deserved victory over Fulham at a sun soaked Molineux All available home seats were taken as Mick McCarthy fielded an unchanged starting line-up for the visit of The Cottagers who kicked-off attacking the deserted North Bank end. The visitors won a corner after just 20 seconds when Pajtim Kasami's cross was deflected behind but David Duff's kick was cleared. Wolves responded with a run down the right flank by Stephen Hunt but his low centre was booted clear. Jamie O'Hara beat two men on the right and his ball into the box was half cleared to Karl Henry whose low drive looked destined for the net until it was deflected behind by a defender. Duff missed a great opportunity of giving Fulham a tenth minute lead after he shot straight at Wayne Hennessey with the goal at his mercy after Andy Johnson and laid the ball into his path. Dickson Etuhu had Hennessey diving at full stretch to hold onto a long-range drive but it was Wolves that held the territorial advantage albeit with few clear openings. Richard Stearman embarked on an adventurous run through the heart of the Fulham midfield but his final ball to Steven Fletcher carried just too much pace for the striker. Doyle's doggedness almost rewarded him with a goal in the 29th minute. Brede Hangeland was trying to shepherd the ball out for a goal-kick but he was hassled off the ball right on the by-line by Doyle who cut back and sidestepped the keeper. But, with defenders closing him down, he lifted the ball over the bar as he fell. Mark Schwarzer made a superb save to turn away a 25-yard first-time rocket from O'Hara, Jarvis's corner coming to nothing. Three minutes before the break Doyle made the breakthrough following a Jarvis corner. The winger pushed the flag-kick to Hunt who promptly returned it. Jarvis crossed and Doyle squirmed free of his marker before lashing a left-footed shot on the turn into the roof of the net. Hennessey had to run to the edge of his area to boot clear a long through ball as Andy Johnson homed in, before Jarvis was just off target after Hunt had created the opening. In first-half stoppage time Wanderers went two up. Roger Johnson headed Hunt's centre onto the foot of the far post and Jarvis kept his nerve to run in and despatch the loose ball into the corner of the net.
Half-Time: Wolves 2 Fulham 0
Fulham substitute Mousa Dembele hadn't been on the field for two minutes when he was yellow carded for catching Johnson with his arm in a heading dual. Duff then had a chance of reducing the deficit when he ran onto a John Arne Riise cross but he completely fluffed his shot with the ball going yards wide. Wolves were soon back on the offensive and Jarvis shot wide after a Hunt pass had been deflected into his path. Then Schwarzer had to tip another powerful effort by O'Hara over the bar after Fletcher had headed the ball into the midfielder's path. On the hour mark Riise was booked after tripping Doyle, and then Hennessey had little difficulty in collecting a Hangeland header after a corner from Danny Murphy. In the 64th minute, Fletcher saw his first-time shot deflected into the side netting by Aaron Hughes and when Jarvis's corner was headed out to O'Hara, the recent signing sent a first-time volley inches over the bar. Wolves were hungry for a third goal and it almost arrived when Jarvis fed Fletcher whose low drive flew just past the post. Hunt went into the book for a challenge on Riise and, moments later, the effervescent wide man saw his shot on the turn tipped around the post by Schwarzer. Hennessey made a fine save to block Andy Johnson's shot. But the keeper couldn't hold on to the ball and Dembele looked odds on to score until Stephen Ward, who was enjoying another fine game, made a superb last ditch tackle to deny the Belgian striker. In the closing five minutes O'Hara twice went close to adding to Wolves' lead whilst there was little to trouble Hennessey at the other end.

Wolves manager Mick McCarthy: "The standards we have set have been very high but there are still 36 games more to play. Last year we earned a reputation down at Fulham as a dirty side, which was so unjust and it had a real adverse effect on us - we didn't make a tackle and got bookings which I didn't think we should have got - and it knocked us back for a short while. I thought we played some terrific football and were the best team on the pitch. We go to Villa Aston Villa next and that will be a tough one. We start bottom of the table every season due to alphabetic order so it's nice to be where we are."
Fulham manager Martin Jol:
"You can be tired in September and October but not at the start of the season and that's not the reason for the style of our play in the first half. If you lose the ball against a side like Wolves, who are full of energy, you have to come up with the answers and we didn't do that in the last 10 minutes of the first half and they scored two goals. The second half was better and we had three good chances, but they deserved the result. Bobby Zamora is our target man and can hold up the ball, so that was a bit of a blow he couldn't play."

Saturday 13th August Blackburn Rovers 1 (Formica 20) Wolves 2 (Fletcher 22, Ward 47)
Wolves came from behind to smash their Blackburn bogey and get the new season off to a perfect start with Steven Fletcher and Stephen Ward the men on the mark at Ewood Park.
Wanderers kicked-off defending the Darwen End of the ground that housed well over 3,000 of their supporters. But there was almost an early setback when Morten Gamst Pedersen's cross ran through to the far post where it was turned goalwards by Junior Hoilett with Wayne Hennessey bundling the ball off the line in a nick of time. Seconds later, Matt Jarvis's angled drive from the right of the Rovers area just beat the far post and the outstretched foot of Fletcher. In the 13th minute, a corner from Pedersen flew through the six-yard box and out to the other side of goal where Roger Johnson headed behind. This time David Dunn took the flag-kick and Hennessey jumped high to claim the ball. Johnson was shown the yellow card after catching Pedersen on the left-wing before Rovers moved into a 20th minute lead. The ball bounced between Richard Stearman and Karl Henry and dropped kindly for Mauro Formica to hit a left-footed shot. Hennessey got his fingertips to the ball but he couldn't stop it from creeping just inside the post. A minute later Stearman became the second Wolves man to go into the book with the referee deciding that he dived as Pedersen tackled on the Rovers' 18-yard line. It was all action and on 22 minutes Wanderers were deservedly level as Fletcher powered home a header after Jarvis had worked a path into the Blackburn area and delivered a pinpoint centre. Stephen Hunt twice went close to giving his team the lead - shooting narrowly over from 25-yards and then cleverly controlling a Ward cross before turning and hitting a rising drive over the bar. Fletcher was just too high with a header after Kevin Doyle had supplied the cross and after Dunn had been yellow carded for a foul on Jamie O'Hara, the newly signed midfielder dragged a 20-yard shot wide of the mark. Brett Emerton was booked for pulling back Fletcher then, if first-half stoppage time, Ward hammered a shot against a defender and O'Hara was wide with a first-time effort after he had latched onto the rebound.
Half-Time: Rovers 1 Wolves 1
Just 40 seconds after the resumption Wolves were awarded a penalty when Jarvis was felled in the box by Michel Salgado after Fletcher had pushed the ball into the box. Doyle stepped up to the spot but Rovers keeper Paul Robinson guessed correctly diving to his left to push the ball out. Fletcher quickly gained possession and sent over a short cross that was half cleared by a combination of the keeper and a defender. But the ball only went as far as Ward who hit a crisp, first-time volley into the bottom corner of the net in front of the delighted travelling supporters. Almost immediately, Mick McCarthy sent Kevin Foley on in place of Stearman. Foley was soon in the thick of things and his cross from the right was chested down by Fletcher who looked odds on to score until Steven Nzonzi saved the day for the home team with a terrific interception and clearance. Johnson got in the way of an on target effort from Formica, the ball bouncing for a corner that came to nothing. Ward was just off target with a header from a Jarvis corner, and home substitute Ruben Rochina was inches away with a drive from the edge of the box after Hoilett had squared a pass to him. The tireless O'Hara chested the ball down and, from 25-yards, hit a shot on the turn that was only just wide of the far post. As the seconds ticked away, Hunt went onto a run deep into the Rovers half before unleashing a shot that flew wide.
Rovers: Robinson (capt), Salgado, Olsson, Emerton (Rochina 45), Dunn, Formica (Blackman 84), Pedersen (Goodwillie 75), Nzonzi, Hoilett, Roberts, Hanley. Unused subs: Bunn, Bruno, Anderson, Henley. Bookings: Dunn (36 - foul), Roberts (60 - dissent).

Victory was Wolves' first at Ewood Park for 19 years
Wolverhampton Wanderers came from behind to beat an injury-hit Blackburn side on the opening day of the season. Rovers went ahead when Jason Roberts set up debutant Mauro Formica, whose low strike went beyond Wayne Hennessey. But Wolves hit back straight away as Steven Fletcher headed home Matt Jarvis's cross at the far post. Stephen Ward scored the winner after the break, amid frantic scenes after Kevin Doyle missed a penalty given for Michel Salgado's foul on Jarvis. Wolves were able to capitalise on a Rovers defence missing three key players. Ryan Nelsen and Chris Samba were already out injured when Gael Givet fell ill on the eve of the game. McCarthy satisfied with away win That meant 19-year-old Scotland international Grant Hanley and midfielder Steven Nzonzi were paired at centre-back. And Wolves targeted Nzonzi in particular, unsettling him with a barrage of long balls and crosses. Fletcher and Kevin Doyle, who played despite pre-match concerns over a knee injury, also linked up well in attack to stretch Blackburn, with marauding support from Jarvis and Stephen Hunt on the wings. Roger Johnson took the captain's armband on his Wolves debut, but both defences struggled early on. The pace of Martin Olsson and Junior Hoilett down the wings created space for Rovers and led to an opening spell dominated by corners. Blackburn thought they had taken an early lead on eight minutes after Pedersen crossed for Hoilett. His close-range shot was saved by Hennessey who just managed to keep it from going over the line. On 20 minutes a long ball over the top was held up by Roberts who managed to wriggle free with strength and skill, before setting up Formica. The Argentina international, who was signed in January, found himself free on the left of the penalty area, and shot low across the keeper, and the goal fired up Wolves who stepped up the pressure. Just two minutes later the visitors were allowed far too much space as Jarvis crossed for former Burnley striker Fletcher to head home at the far post. The rest of the first half was a scrappy affair, with neither team having the cutting edge or quality to go ahead. Two minutes after the restart, Salgado brought down Jarvis inside the area for a penalty. Robinson saved Doyle's tame spot-kick, but after a scramble the ball came back to Ward who truck a sweet left-footed volley into the corner from the edge of the area. Wolves now looked more solid defensively, and were able to counter-attack well. Blackburn threw on new signing David Goodwillie on 72 minutes, and he had a late shot which sailed wide. Their best hope was from corners but there was no way through. But Wolves ended the game well in control to take a deserved three points.
Wolves manager Mick McCarthy: "Good start but let's not get carried away 37 to go. We've got tough games ahead. "The game was end to end. Once we scored in the second half I felt we controlled the game. That's something we've been working on. "I am sure Steve [Kean] will be bemoaning his luck at Samba's injury and losing [Phil] Jones. "We made the most of it. Doyle and Fletcher are both good players. They were great today and caused the two centre backs real problems."
Blackburn manager Steve Kean:
"We are bitterly disappointed because we had a great pre season. "Losing Gael Givet at the very last minute, Steven Nzonzi had to go back there and play there for us for the first time. "I thought he did well considering it was a partnership thrown together at the last minute due to illness. "11 players have left the club and we've had three in. "We need to strengthen in different areas and make sure we have a competitive squad."
