Sunday 22 May Wolves 2 (O'Hara 73, Hunt 87)  Blackburn Rovers 3 (Roberts 22, Emerton 38, Hoillet 45) ko 4pm

An appalling first half with the two centre backs most at fault - Craddock failing to get tackles in and Mancienne giving the ball away. There can't be ToasterDSC01524space for either of them in th esquad next season. It looked impossible for 45 minutes that the Wolves were at all interested in staying in the Premier League - or premiership as trhe Wolves ticker display still calls it. Paul Robinson had to be woken up to leave the pitch as he'd had absolutely nothing to do. At least Mick woke them up at half time and took Manc off, bringing a much more forward looking aspect with Sylvan on. Only Fletcher and Stephen Ward can carry any credit in the first half. In the end we spent too much time back in the relegation zone. We will probably be favourites for the drop next season unless Mick stops buying relegation fodder, and buy he must - apart from centre back where Danny Baath must be ready to step up. The emotions of the day are well served up by Tony Hughes' composition read it here

Wolves wrote

It was a nerve wracking end to the campaign for Wolves' supporters who experienced virtually every emotion in a roller coaster of a game with Blackburn Rovers. Despite losing to the Lancashire side, Wolves retained their Premier League status as both Birmingham and Blackpool both lost their respective games to join West Ham in the drop to the Championship.

MattWW-22-05-11 009 Stan Cullis 2011 Jarvis returned in place of Adlene Guedioura as the only change to the Wolves starting line-up. Wolves kicked-off attacking the South Bank end and an early foul by Jody Craddock on Jason Roberts led to a Jermaine Jones free-kick that was headed clear by George Elokobi. The first effort of note from the home side came from Stephen Ward whose angled shot was smothered by Paul Robinson in the Rovers goal. Wayne Hennessey did well to cut out a low driven cross from Junior Hoillet who had beaten Karl Henry on the by-line before, in the 12th minute, Chris Samba wasn't too far away from his own net as he attempted to head clear a Stephen Hunt centre. Samba then threw himself in the way of a goalbound effort from Ward after Steven Fletcher had nodded the ball into his strike partner's path following a Kevin Foley cross. After Henry had been booked for a challenge on Hoillet, Elokobi was wide with a far post header from Jamie O'Hara's corner. But midway through the half Blackburn took the lead. Hoillet pulled the ball back into the path of Michel Salgado whose low drive was deflected into the net by Roberts. Wanderers tried hard to get back on level terms but there was little to trouble Robinson before Rovers grabbed a second on 38 minutes. Robinson pumped a free-kick into the home area from just inside the Blackburn half and although Craddock headed the ball out it only went as far as Brett Emerton who volleyed past Hennessey from the 18-yard line. Roberts almost made it three with an angled shot that was brilliantly turned behind by Hennessey and when Wolves tried to hit back, Jarvis's cross went over the head of Hunt. Samba's blatant obstruction of Jarvis led to an O'Hara free-kick that the visiting defence struggled to clear. Eventually the ball fell to Craddock but his volley was wide of the mark. In stoppage time, a miserable opening half was compounded as Hoillet skipped challenges from Craddock and Elokobi before rifling a shot into the bottom corner. Just before the half-time whistle, Craddock was booked for a late challenge on Roberts.

Half-Time: Wolves 0 Rovers 3

Sylvan Ebanks-Blake replaced Michael Mancienne after the break. He took Ward's place up front with the Irishman dropping into the left back slot and Elokobi going into central defence. A great piece of work from Ward gave Jarvis the chance to cross but the unmarked Hunt was wide with his header. Then, from an O'Hara free-kick, Fletcher was too high with his header. When Foley missed the chance of clearing a Hoillet cross it presented Roberts with an easy chance but Hennessey made another terrific save. Appeals for a Rovers penalty after Ward's challenge on Roberts were waved away but Jones was penalised for a foul on Hunt in the 73rd minute and it led to a Wolves goal. The Blackburn defence were caught off guard as Hunt turned the free-kick sideways to O'Hara who hit a first time shot past Robinson. Just a minute later it took a superb save from Robinson to deny Fletcher whose header from Foley's cross had 'goal' written all over it. Wolves had, by now, built up a head of steam and from an O'Hara corner Jones had to clear Ward's corner from in front of the line. In the 87th minute Hunt notched an all-important second goal for Wolves as he curled a great shot into the far corner of the net. It meant that as long as Birmingham didn't score a winner at White Hart Lane then Wolves would stay up on goals scored. As it turned out, it was Spurs who grabbed a last minute goal. The news spread around the ground like wildfire and the final whistle sparked a pitch invasion by jubilant supporters.

Saturday 14 May Sunderland  1 (Sessegnon 33) Wolves 3 (Craddock 23, Fletcher 53, Elokobi 78) ko 12:45pm (note - early KO because of  clash with  F A Cup Final)

A prospect of a third consecutive season in the Barclays Premier League for Wolves grew ever greater following the capture of three vital points after a 3-1 win at Sunderland.   Wolves had failed to take a point from their four previous visits to the Stadium of Light but after former Black Cat Jody Craddock had given Mick McCarthy's men the lead, second half headers from Steven Fletcher and George Elokobi carved a victory path after Stephane Sessegnon had equalised for the Wearsiders.
Wolves were unchanged for the game but there was a welcome return from injury for Kevin Doyle who was named as a substitute.   Sunderland kicked-off attacking the end of the ground that housed almost 2,000 away supporters.  After a scrappy and chanceless opening to the game, Wolves were awarded a free-kick some 30-yards out after John Mensah's challenge on Fletcher. Jamie O'Hara swung the ball into the middle where keeper Simon Mignolet calmly collected.  In the ninth minute Bolo Zenden was a whisker away from opening the scoring when his 22-yard drive hit the bar before bouncing away and being cleared.  A low cross from Ahmed Elmohamady flew dangerously through the heart of the Wanderers box before Jack Colback screwed a shot wide of the far post from the edge of the area.  The first corner of the game went Wolves' way but after O'Hara's flag-kick had been cleared, Sunderland went close to breaking the deadlock twice in a minute.  Wayne Hennessey pulled off a tremendous diving save to turn away a vicious long-range effort from Sessegnon and then Phil Bardsley was only just wide with a low drive.  But it was Wolves that took the lead midway through the half after Stephen Hunt's corner was only half cleared. The ball was played back to him and he crossed for Craddock to hit an angled first time shot into the far corner of the net.  Sessegnon tried to work an angle for himself but his shot was blocked before O'Hara was inches away from extending Wolves' lead in the 32nd minute.  The on loan midfielder picked the ball up inside the Sunderland half and ran to a spot 25-yards out before unleashing a shot that dipped over Mignolet's head before smacking against the bar and bouncing behind.   Cruelly, just over a minute later, the home side drew level. Karl Henry had to head behind a cross from Elmohamady and from Jordan Henderson's corner the ball glanced off a Wolves head and flew narrowly wide of the far post.  From the second corner, taken by Zenden, the defence failed to clear and Sessegnon was able to hook the ball home from close quarters.  Shortly before the break, Stephen Ward hassled Mensah as he tried to shepherd the ball behind. Ward won possession and ran in along the by-line before hitting a low cross through the six-yard box that no-one got a touch to.

Half-Time: Sunderland 1 Wolves 1

Matt Jarvis was an interval replacement for Adlene Guedioura and the visitors made a bright start to the second half which was only three minutes old when Elokobi just failed to turn the ball home in the melee that followed O'Hara's corner.  Then Fletcher looked on to score as he ran onto O'Hara's deep cross but Elmohamady and Mignolet combined to block the Scottish striker's shot.   Hennessey made a fine fingertip save to turn over Steed Malbranque's rising drive but it was Wolves that struck next as they regained the advantage through Fletcher who headed home after Jarvis had outstripped Bardsley and crossed from the right.  After Hennessey had beaten Cristian Riveros to a through ball, a mix up in the home area almost presented Wanderers with a third. Mensah and Mignolet seemed to leave the ball to one another and Jarvis nipped in but was denied by Mensah who threw himself in front of the ball.    The home players and fans were not best pleased when the referee waved play on after Hunt's penalty area challenge on Sessegnon.   Some neat interplay between Ward and Fletcher almost opened up a path for Hunt bur the ball went just behind the effervescent midfielder.   Doyle was sent on in place of Fletcher who, like Ward, had run himself ragged. And Doyle was soon in the thick of things with a short, low centre that went behind off a defender. From Hunt's corner Elokobi headed narrowly over the bar.   Sessegnon's foul on Ward led to Wolves giving themselves a two goal cushion in the 78th minute as O'Hara's free-kick was powerfully headed into the net by Elokobi in front of the ecstatic travelling fans.  There was a good chance for the Black Cats when a terrific ball into the box by Zenden only needed a touch with substitute Ryan Noble just failing to do so as the ball went just past the far post.  Home skipper Zenden was doing his best for his team and he forced Hennessey into a full length save at the near post as the game approached its conclusion.

the end of the season, so youngsters like forward Ryan Noble could play.
Wolves forward Kevin Doyle is ready to make his comeback from knee ligament damage.
He has been sidelined for nearly two months since suffering the injury on international duty.

MATCH PREVIEW by Martin Fisher  Match of the Day commentator

If Wolves fans had been offered this scenario a few weeks back I think they would have snapped your hands off. One place and one point above that dreaded dotted line with two to play - their fate is in their own hands and that's all you can ask for.  Last week's home win over bitter rivals West Brom was absolutely crucial, now they must build on that against a Sunderland side who are still without a recognised striker.  These clubs have shared 15 goals, three penalties, two red cards and two own goals in their last three games Their season can't end soon enough, winter dreams of a European spot destroyed by a run of nine defeats in 12 games. Once a fortress, the Stadium of Light has provided sweet pickings for recent visitors. Since New Year, only Wigan Athletic have gone away empty-handed.  However it's not a ground where Wolves have fared well over the years. In fact, their last win on Wearside was at Roker Park in September 1993 when Geoff Thomas was amongst their scorers.  If recent meetings are anything to go by it should be incident-packed. These clubs have shared 15 goals, three penalties, two red cards and two own goals in their last three games.  As a neutral I'd love it to follow that trend and produce a thriller but I'm sure Mick McCarthy would settle for a dour, scruffy 1-0 victory on his return to one of his former clubs. Three points from this one would be a huge step towards Premier League survival.

MATCH FACTS

Head-to-head
• Sunderland have won their last four home matches against Wolves and are unbeaten in their last seven meetings on Wearside.
• Wolves are looking to complete the league double over Sunderland for the first time since 1980/81.
Sunderland
• Sunderland won a Premier League match in May for the first time since 2006 last weekend. They have accrued only 18 points from 21 Premier League matches in the

month of May (W5, D3, L13).
• Nonetheless, they need only a draw to register their biggest top-flight points total for 10 years. They are also on course for their highest finish since coming seventh a decade ago.
• They have dropped 23 points from winning positions this season - only Aston Villa (26 points) have fared worse.
• The Black Cats have conceded 29 goals in their last 12 matches.

Wolves

• Wolves moved out of the relegation zone for the first time since the end of February by beating West Brom 3-1 last weekend.
• That victory ended a five-match winless run, in which they only picked up two points out of a possible 15.
• They have the worst away record in the division, earning a mere nine points from 18 matches.
• Mick McCarthy spent four seasons as manager of Sunderland, but only won two and lost 31 of his 37 Premier League matches in charge. He suffered relegation from

the Premier League in 2003 and, after securing promotion in 2005, was sacked the following March with the club doomed to immediate relegation.
• Jody Craddock made 168 appearances for Sunderland between 1997 and 2003.

Sunday 08 May Wolves 3 (Fletcher 15, 47, Guedioura 28) West Bromwich1 (Odemwingie-pen 54) ko noon  Live on sky

Well, who would have thought it - a back four all playing in their normal positions? Three goals up against the Baggies and then a nail biting 41 minutes to follow. Athough the somewhat confusing substitutions added to the tension for the last twenty minutes this will go down in the top one of Wolves first halves in the Premiership exaggerated by the last three games. Fletcher won every single header. The defence kept its shape, while Stephen Hunt managed to terrorise the entire Albion midfield and Stephen Ward put in a great shift up front, apart from his awful hash of a chance when clean through. Although Wayne had no chance with the penalty - the screens had all been showing his save at the Hawthorns when he was our player of the season - he made an outstanding flying leap to keep the score to 3-1 and avoided a really anxious last ten minutes. Somehow the WWFC report missed this. The Baggies put the loss down to having three six footers missing! They dominated for the first five minutes, and looked dangerous, but once the sting was taken out of Peter Odimwingie they collapsed in the first half and to start the second. The win took us up to 17th above Blackpool, but two wins must still be the target. oh, and Mike Dean actually awarded us some free kicks!

Wolves boosted their Premier League survival hopes with a well-deserved 3-1 victory over arch rivals West Bromwich Albion earning three precious points. Steven Fletcher struck twice sandwiching an Adlene Guedioura effort before The Baggies hit back with a consolation penalty. Mick McCarthy opted to leave Matt Jarvis on the bench with Stephen Hunt coming in to play wide left. The only other change from the team that took a point from Birmingham saw Guedioura playing on the right with Kevin Foley dropping to right back in place of Richard Stearman who was also named as a substitute. Albion kicked-off attacking the South Bank end of a noisy Molineux with the home side doing the early pressing. The first attack of note saw Stephen Ward caught narrowly offside after running onto Fletcher's nod on from Jamie O'Hara's centre. In the fifth minute Wayne Hennessey fielded a deflected, angled effort from Jerome Thomas before a Fletcher shot on the turn was blocked following another O'Hara cross. A Youssouf Mulumbu foul on Guedioura led to a O'Hara free-kick that was headed out by James Morrison before Jonas Olsson's trip on Ward was the catalyst to Wanderers taking the lead. O'Hara arrowed the free-kick towards the far corner of the net and Scott Carson made a tremendous save at the expense of a corner. Hunt's flag kick hit Guedioura's midriff and dropped nicely into the path of Fletcher who hit a low shot into the net. Just a minute later, after Fletcher had been fouled outside the visitors area, Guedioura curled the free-kick just over the angle. In the 28th minute, Wolves went two up, again following another Hunt corner. It was role reversal this time with Fletcher heading the ball back into the six-yard box for Guedioura to volley home from close quarters. There was an opportunity for Albion after Karl Henry had fouled Peter Odemwingie some 25-yards out but Nicky Shorey's free-kick was way too high. After Somen Tchoyi had fouled O'Hara to the left of the Albion area, the on loan midfielder took the free-kick himself and George Elokobi raced in to power a header over the bar. O'Hara was in the thick of things and from his right-wing cross, Ward headed inches wide of the far post. In the final minute of the half, Odemwingie almost reduced the deficit with a terrific cross-shot that was uncomfortably close as it flew wide.

Half-Time: Wolves 2 Albion 0

Within two minutes of the restart the home supporters were in raptures as Fletcher scored his second and his side's third. Abdoulaye Meite failed to clear Foley's through ball and Fletcher kept his cool as he took possession and slid the ball past the unprotected Carson. Thomas's snapshot was safely collected by Hennessy and when Wolves threatened again, Guedioura's 20-yard drive was deflected into the side netting. In the 54th minute, Odemwingie reduced his team's deficit as he tucked away a penalty awarded after Guedioura's challenge on Thomas. Ten minutes later, Thomas held off Foley's challenge and lashed a shot against the bar. After Marc-Antoine Fortune had replaced Gonzalo Jara, Tchoyi, with a free header, also went close. Jarvis was sent on in place of Guedioura for the final 15 minutes before Shorey's pass picked out Fortune who held off Craddock before shooting over the bar. More substitutions followed with Ismail Miller taking the place of Simon Cox for the visitors and Stearman for O'Hara for Wolves. Craddock and Henry both went into the book for fouls on Miller as the minutes ticked away and Ward was literally six inches away from a fourth goal that would have eased any frayed nerves with a low shot that just beat the far post. Two minutes before the end, substitute Sylvan Ebanks-Blake drew a fine save from Carson who beat away an angled shot with the Molineux striker scooping the rebound wide.

Sunday 01 May Birmingham  1 (Larsson 27) Wolves 1 (Fletcher-pen 7)  ko noon

Toothless again with a minor shuffle of the pack. The inability to create chances against a team who had ten men for over 60 minutes when Gardner was sent off for diving again cost us. Only two shots on goal is appalling. The Blues had around 68% possession before the sending off so it could have been far worse. No game plan to beat the 10 men or adapt to the advantage. So we're still stuck in the relegation zone. Stears & Jarvo both given the big heave-ho while Berra relegated to the bench. Mancienne gave away the equaliser but for once Kevin Phillips didn't score against us and it was far better than Tuesday night... but couldn't have been worse.

Birmingham City1 (Larsson 27) Wolves 1 (Fletcher-pen 7)

Wolves had to be satisfied with a point from a keenly contested derby game with Birmingham at St Andrews. Blues had to play for an hour with ten men following the dismissal of Craig Gardner but, facing a packed defence, Wanderers failed to take advantage of the extra man. George Elokobi made an earlier than expected return at left-back and Kevin Foley returned in right midfield with Christophe Berra and the injured Michael Kightly the men missing from the team that had started against Stoke. Michael Mancienne moved into central defence and Stephen Ward partnered Steven Fletcher in the attack in a 4-4-2 formation. Wolves kicked-off defending the Railway End and within the first minute Foley had a shot blocked after a cross from Karl Henry with Jamie O'Hara hitting the rebound wide from just outside the area. But Wolves had their supporters cheering as they took a seventh minute lead through a Fletcher penalty. The spot kick was awarded after Ben Foster clattered into Ward who was chasing Matt Jarvis' through pass after the winger had picked up a poor clearance from the keeper. Fletcher rolled the ball home after sending Foster the wrong way. Just a minute later O'Hara and Gardner were shown the yellow card - O'Hara for fouling the midfielder and the Blues man for his angry reaction. There was a let off for the visitors after Richard Stearman had fouled Gardner right on the 18-yard line. Seb Larsson's free-kick curled over the wall and smacked against the face of the crossbar before being cleared. Foster had little difficulty in gathering a Stearman header after O'Hara had pumped a free-kick into the box, then Roger Johnson just beat Ward to the ball after a back heel from Fletcher opened up the Blues defence. Just seconds later City were level after a mistake by Mancienne whose misdirected header from a long clearance dropped nicely for Larsson to bury a low shot past Wayne Hennessey. With the home crowd still celebrating, Blues were reduced to ten men when Gardner was sent-off. He went down as Jody Craddock ran in to challenge and was booked for diving - his second yellow card. Alex McLeish immediately withdrew Wolves nemesis Kevin Phillips and sent on Jean Beausejour. Craddock was the next to go into the book for late challenge on Cameron Jerome. Foley had a good chance two minutes before the break after Ward knocked down a Jarvis centre but he hurried his shot and the ball bobbled wide of the mark. In stoppage time, Ward's hooked effort was blocked by a defender and, at the other end, Craddock had to clear from Lee Bowyer who was closing in on another Larsson free-kick.

Half-Time: Blues 1 Wolves 1

Stearman was replaced at half-time by Adam Hammill who took his normal position on the wing whilst Foley dropped to right-back. Hammill was soon involved and Foster was fortunate to have the ball bounce off the winger for a goal kick after he had to leave his area to cover. Henry was shown the yellow card after a heavy challenge on Bowyer before Foley was harshly penalised for a foul on Beausejour to the left of the Wolves box with Larsson's free-kick curling a couple of feet over the bar. Jarvis dispossessed Beausejour just outside the home box but then fired well over the bar after crossing the 18-yard line. A few seconds later Jarvis was withdrawn with Stephen Hunt taking his place. With the home side packing their defence, opportunities for Wolves were few and far between and when O'Hara did get in a long distance drive, Foster made an easy diving save. Bowyer joined the list of bookings for a foul on Hammill. Foster punched clear a dangerous Elokobi centre before Mick McCarthy made a final change for the last few minutes with Sam Vokes taking the place of the industrious Ward. Stephen Carr threw himself in the way of a Hammill drive and that was followed by a scramble in the Blues area after Hunt's cross was headed out to Henry. The Wolves skipper drilled a low drive into the six-yard box and the ball pinged about for a few seconds with Fletcher in the thick of things but unable to get a shot in. The danger eased for City when Hammill handled the ball.

MATCH PREVIEW

Wolves make the short trip to Birmingham, where they last won a top-flight game 30 years ago, in desperate need of a victory after Tuesday's morale-sapping defeat at

Stoke.   We weren't expected to take anything from these last two games [at Chelsea and Liverpool] and the bookies have been proved right- Birmingham boss Alex

McLeish

Mick McCarthy's men have lost their way since their last visit to Birmingham, six weeks ago. After winning at Blues' arch rivals Aston Villa to claim a third victory in

six games, Wolves looked well set for survival.  However, since then they have claimed just one point from a possible 12, a run that has coincided with an injury to key

man Kevin Doyle. The Irish striker hopes to return for the final two games of the season, but unless Wolves can stop the rot their fate may already settled by then.
Heavy defeats at Chelsea and Liverpool mean Birmingham are not yet safe. However, Alex McLeish's men appear to be inching their way to safety thanks to their home

form - they are chasing a third successive win at St Andrew's.

MATCH FACTS

Head-to-head

• Wolves won the reverse fixture in December to claim their first win in 10 league matches against Birmingham.
• The last time Wolves won a top-flight game at St Andrew's (on 21 November 1981) they ended the season second bottom and were relegated.
• An away win would give Mick McCarthy's men their first top-flight double against Birmingham since the 1975/76 season. That year Blues ended the campaign one

place above Wolves, who were relegated.

Birmingham

• Blues have won two of their last nine Premier League matches (W2, D2, L5).
• Cameron Jerome has not scored in his last 21 Premier League games. His last top-flight goal came in the 3-2 defeat at Stoke on 9 November. He has netted two FA Cup

goals since then.
• Birmingham have conceded eight goals in their last two games, and have kept just one clean sheet in their last 10 matches in league and cup.

Wolves

• Mick McCarthy's side have taken just eight points on their travels - the worst record in the top flight this season.
• They have conceded 11 goals in their last four games, scoring two in reply.
• Wolves have lost 16 of 19 league games in which their opponents scored first.

Tuesday 26 th April Stoke City 3 (Jones 16, Shawcross 45, Pennant 51) Wolves 0

Awful and getting worse.  Do they want to stay up?  Mick monkeyed around with the side again and the doomed experiment of bringing veteran Craddock back backfired as he was involved in all three of Stoke’s goals - mainly be being too far off the attacker to prevent the shot.  Only Wayne came out with any credit.   Toothless up front - only one shot on goal- and completely overrun in midfield.

Wolves missed the chance of moving out of the bottom three of the Premier League after they suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of a buoyant Stoke City side at the Britannia Stadium.  A one sided affair could have been worse had it not been for a superb display by Wayne Hennessey who was in superb form.
Mick McCarthy made two changes from the team that had drawn with Fulham - Michael Kightly and Michael Mancienne came in taking the places of Adlene Guedioura and Nenad Milijaś.  Wanderers kicked-off defending the end of the ground that housed around 2,500 travelling supporters. After just three minutes came the first Rory Delap long-throw of the evening but Richard Stearman was there to head clear.  A Matt Jarvis centre flicked off the top of Steven Fletcher's head over to Kightly on the far side of the box. He played a one-two with Jamie O'Hara before hitting a low shot a yard wide.  Jermaine Pennant's corner caused a brief scramble before Robert Huth prodded the ball wide but Stoke's pressure paid off in the 16th minute as Kenwyne Jones headed them into the lead. Pennant supplied the cross from the right and although Hennessey got a hand to the striker's bouncing header, he had little chance of keeping the ball out. The keeper was at his best four minutes later as Pennant's clever chip left Andy Wilkinson through on goal but his angled shot was brilliantly turned aside by the Welsh keeper.  Seconds later Jones beat the offside trap and although he was completely unmarked, he hurried his shot and was well off target. Stoke lost the services of Matthew Etherington when he slipped and fell on the far touchline. It was immediately evident that his injury was serious and he was eventually carried off on a stretcher with Dean Whitehead taking his place. Jones was a fraction too high with a header from Jonathan Walters' centre as Stoke continued to turn the screw. Just before the interval, Stephen Ward's speculative scissors kick was high and wide after Jarvis had knocked a Kightly cross to him. But, then, two great saves from Hennessey preceded a second Stoke goal. Pennant's perfect through ball put Whitehead clean through but Hennessey spread himself to block with his legs. Kightly was then shown the yellow card for a foul on Marc Wilson on the left side. Pennant pumped the free-kick into the box and Ryan Shawcross's header looked sure to double City's score until Hennessey somehow touched it over the bar. But a goal did arrive from the corner conceded. Pennant laid the ball into the path of Wilson whose drive took a deflection on the way to Shawcross who turned the ball home from close quarters.

Half-Time: Stoke 2 Wolves0

Wolves enjoyed a spell of possession at the start of the new half without threatening the City goal.  When Walters broke for the home side he fired wide of the far post from the edge of the box but there was no respite and Pennant made it three when he blasted the ball home after Walters' cross had deflected off Jody Craddock and dropped nicely for the winger. Facing a mountain to climb, Wolves then enjoyed their best spell of the game forcing four corners in succession but sadly none of them yielded any reward.  After Christophe Berra had headed over from a Jarvis cross, Wolves lost the services of Fletcher. The striker went down after challenging Shawcross who was shepherding the ball behind. Sam Vokes took his place.  Glenn Whelan went into the book for a foul on Karl Henry and Wilson for a scything tackle on Jarvis. In between the yellow cards Stephen Hunt was sent on for Kightly and Guedioura for Ward.  Walters was inches away from a fourth for The Potters with a tremendous 25-yard drive that flashed inches wide.  There was a brief altercation between Hunt, Huth and Shawcross with Huth perhaps fortunate not to suffer the same yellow card fate as the other two.  A night of misery for Wolves and their supporters was almost compounded in stoppage time when substitute Danny Pugh fired inches over the bar from 20-yards out.

Stoke: Begovic, Wilkinson, Shawcross (capt), Huth, Wilson, Pennant (Pugh 72), Whelan, Delap (Diao 80), Etherington (Whitehead 31), Walters, Jones. Unused subs: Sorensen, Collins, Carew, Faye.  Bookings: Whelan (72 - foul), Wilson (81 - foul), Shawcross (88 - flare up).

Wolves: Hennessey, Stearman, Ward (Guedioura 79), Henry (capt), Craddock, Berra, Kightly (Hunt 74), Mancienne, Fletcher (Vokes 69), O'Hara, Jarvis. Unused subs: Hahnemann, Milijaś, Mouyokolo, Foley. Bookings: Kightly (44 - foul), Hunt (88 - flare up).

Wolves 1 (Fletcher 22) Fulham 1 (Johnson 80)

In the halcyon days of Joleon Lescott we had AJ under control in every match, and even his diving rarely succeeded. That was forgotten on Saturday as he spent just 18 seconds on the pitch before costing us two valuable points. Stephen Fletcher probably had his best half for Wolves but two careless shots after breaking through the Fulham defence should have saved the points but he missed badly. Once again Wayne was man of the match with three outstanding saves, albeit with a few wobblies too. He was closely run by Capt Karl who put a terrific cross in for Fletcher’s headed goal. Stears apparently moved to right back but naturally kept drifting inside. Another defensive experiment which didn’t quite work out. Fulham had control of the game for a good twenty minutes before Fletch scored with our first real attack. Only profligate finishing and Wayne kept us alive til that point. Adlene again put in a powerful performance matching the physical presence of Fulham. Danny Murphy’s comments earlier in the season might just as well have applied to Fulham, with three unpunished elbows from Murphy, Hangeland and Dempsey. MArk Hughes was right in saying that the ccasion was too much for ref Oliver but he was at least the entertainment, being sent to the stands for abuse of a water bottle (which he repeatedly tried to kick and missed).

A goal by Fulham substitute Andy Johnson, who had been on the pitch for just 18 seconds, denied Wolves a priceless victory after Steven Fletcher had headed Mick McCarthy's men into a half-time lead. There were three changes to the home starting line-up. Stephen Ward came in at left-back in place of the injured George Elokobi, Jody Craddock returned to central defence for his first game in six months with Richard Stearman slotting into the right-back spot whilst Nenad Milijaš took a midfield role. Kevin Foley and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake were the men making way with both taking a seat on the bench.

Wolves kicked-off attacking the North Bank end of a noisy Molineux with visiting skipper Danny Murphy the vocal target of the home fans following his comments after the game at Craven Cottage earlier in the season. It took a flying save from Wayne Hennessey in only the third minute to keep out a 25-yard effort from Carlos Salcido and then, from Simon Davies's corner, Adlene Guedioura had to clear from in front of the line after BrWW 1 Fulham 1 Fletch Goal 1030ede Hangeland had nodded the ball into WW 1 FFC 1 Fletch celeb1032the six-yard box. Fulham were looking by far the more dangerous side in the opening exchanges although their defence had to deal with a dangerous cross and then a free-kick from Matt Jarvis. Stearman went into the book for a high challenge on Eidur Gudjohnsen and then Clint Dempsey missed a great chance when he lifted the ball over the bar from eight-yards out after a cross from Steve Sidwell. A deep ball into the box from Milijaš was met by Guedioura whose bouncing header was deflected wide by a defender. Although Jarvis's initial corner was cleared Wolves kept up the pressure and were rewarded with a 22nd minute lead. Guedioura beat his marker on the right before laying the ball off for Karl Henry whose centre was powerfully headed home by Fletcher. Aaron Hughes felled Fletcher just outside the Fulham box but when Milijaš squared the free-kick to Guedioura, the midfielder fired high and wide. The referee incurred the wrath of the crowd when Dempsey and Craddock tangled near the centre-circle. The veteran Wolves defender appeared to take an elbow on the chin but the official gave the free-kick in favour of the Fulham man. Guedioura tried a speculative volley from fully 40-yards out that was nearer the corner flag than the goal and then, in stoppage time, Jamie O'Hara fired wide of the far post with a shot on the turn after he had taken a pass from Fletcher.

Half-Time: Wolves 1 Fulham 0

The new half was just 23 seconds old when Chris Baird was yellow carded for tripping Jarvis who was in full flight on the left-wing. The visiting defence were at sixes and sevens before they managed to scramble clear O'Hara's free-kick. Hennessey failed to hold a low cross from Baird but Henry managed to divert the ball back into the keeper's arms before Gudjohnsen could capitalise. Guedioura played a one-two with O'Hara before hitting a low 30-yard drive that had Mark Schwarzer at full stretch and the Australian keeper needed attempts before he had the ball under control. On 55 minutes Gudjohnsen hit a shot over the near angle from a good position before Fulham boss Mark Hughes was sent to the stand by the referee. Hughes reacted after Hangeland was booked for a tackle from behind on Fletcher. He repeatedly kicked wildly at a water bottle before he was banished from the touchline. With the game approaching the hour mark, Michael Mancienne was sent on in place of Milijaš. Twice in the space of a minute Dempsey was wide after being set up by Gudjohnsen on each occasion and then Hennessey made a fine save from a Sidwell shot that took a wicked deflection. Fulham made a double change in the 69th minute with Bobby Zamora and Gael Kakuta taking the places of Gudjohnsen and Murphy respectively. The newly introduced duo were soon involved with a low shot from Kakuta that was taken by Hennessey, and a clearance off the line by Zamora from Christophe Berra's tame header following a Jarvis corner. Fletcher took possession of a poor clearance from Schwarzer and advanced into the area but the keeper atoned for his error by making a good save from the striker's rising drive. Ebanks-Blake went on for Fletcher and then came the Johnson switch that was to change the course of the game. Dempsey gave way for the striker who seconds later was celebrating after tucking away Zamora's lay off. Hennessey got a hand to Johnson's shot but couldn't keep the ball out. He later admitted that he was completely unsighted. Ebanks-Blake headed wide from a Ward cross and, as the game drifted into stoppage time, Kakuta had a fierce shot beaten away by Hennessey. Kakuta regained possession and struck a shot that flashed narrowly wide of the far post. Deep into stoppage time, Craddock was booked for a challenge on Moussa Dembele.

and the BBC said

Relegation strugglers Wolves were denied a priceless win as a dramatic late intervention from substitute Andy Johnson earned Fulham a point. Johnson, introduced on 79 minutes with the visitors trailing, had been on the field for only 18 seconds when he slammed home a Bobby Zamora lay-off. Steven Fletcher had earlier put Wolves ahead, nodding home from six yards after Karl Henry's far-post cross. Fulham boss Mark Hughes was sent off for his furious reaction to a booking. Johnson's strike provided a suitably theatrical finale to a match that began with Danny Murphy cast in the role of pantomime villain and ended in a fashion Wolves manager Mick McCarthy will probably have deemed closer to tragedy.

McCarthy satisfied with point

With 10 minutes to go, McCarthy's side - who started the contest bottom of the Premier League table - were heading for a win that would have hauled them clear of the relegation zone. Having taken the lead against the run of play midway through the first half, Wolves had defended tigerishly up to that point and looked firm favourites to see the game out. But Johnson's strike, driven home emphatically after Zamora had set him up from a long ball into the box, ensured that Fulham would return home with something to show for an afternoon of ceaseless endeavour. It was probably no more than they deserved from a game played in a febrile atmosphere. Murphy, in particular, endured a torrid time on his first visit to Molineux since remarking - in the wake of last September's reverse fixture, in which an Henry tackle left Zamora with a broken leg - that Wolves were "too pumped up" for Premier League combat. Both managers subsequently exonerated Henry of any blame for the incident but that did not stop the Molineux support - doubtless stoked up by Henry's pre-match suggestion that Murphy should "worry about his own team" - subjecting the Fulham midfielder to a relentless chorus of derision.

Game was too much for the ref - Hughes

The charged atmosphere seemed to animate the visitors more than their opponents, and for the opening 20 minutes life was less than comfortable for the home defence. No one was more prominent for Fulham than Carlos Salcido. Not content with drawing a flying save from keeper Wayne Hennessy in the opening moments, the livewire left-back then delivered a perfect cross for Clint Dempsey, who somehow contrived to fire over from six yards out with the goal at his mercy. Wolves were feeling the heat, and the temperature rose further when Richard Stearman made a poor challenge on Eidur Gudjohnsen, incensing the Fulham striker's team-mates and drawing a predictable booking from referee Michael Oliver. The Ashington official's next major decision was similarly straightforward, as Fletcher made Fulham pay for their profligacy by out-jumping Aaron Hughes to head in Henry's right-wing centre. The Scotland international's fifth league goal of the season did little to allay the tension and the half ended with further incident as Henry was flattened by a Murphy challenge and Fulham's Steve Sidwell wrestled Jamie O'Hara to the floor. Fulham continued to create, too, although Simon Davies will doubtless wish to forget his failure to connect with an inviting ball from Dempsey.

More threatening was Chris Baird's cross from the right shortly after the break, which eluded the prone Hennessy's grasp and would have presented the lurking Moussa Dembele with a tap-in, had Henry not nipped in ahead of the Belgian to clear. The breathless pace continued, Adlene Guedioura drawing a sprawling save from Schwarzer at one end before Gudjohnsen marred a weaving run into the box by blasting over.

Already a goal down, Fulham then lost their manager, referee Oliver sending Hughes to the stands for his furious reaction to the somewhat harsh booking administered for Brede Hangeland's sliding challenge on Fletcher. Johnson's late intervention doubtless improved the Welshman's humour and Hughes might have had even greater cause for cheer had Hennessy not thwarted substitute Gael Kakuta late on.

Tuesday 26 April Stoke City Wolves  ko 7.45pm

Saturday 09 April Wolves Everton   3 (Beckford 21, Neville 39, Bilyaletdinov 45)ko 12:30pm Live on sky

Woeful performance, especially for the goals with George Elokobi too slow for the first, Karl Henry turning his back on Neville's shot, and O'Hara passing the ball to Everton for the third.  Only Wayne could be proud of his performance but wont be after conceding 3.  Adlene put in a good first game back after 6 months. Up front Fletcher was abject - winning two headers all afternoon (and one was to concede a corner in his own box).  Ł7m player?- daylight robbery.  Sylvan had one sublime take on the move but didn't really threaten after the pen appeal was turned down.  At the back Foley was absent, while Stears battled gamely against faster players, Berra went missing.   We can win 3 games says Mick - we could but not like this.

The feelgood factor of a warm spring afternoon at Molineux evaporated in a 24 minute spell in the first-half as Everton rattled in three goals without reply to severely dent Wolves' Premier League survival hopes.  Mick McCarthy made two changes to his starting line-up. Adlene Guedioura returned for his first senior appearance since September and Steven Fletcher was paired with Sylvan Ebanks-Blake up front as the boss went for a 4-4-2 formation. Adam Hammill and Nenad Milijaš dropped down to the bench. Everton kicked-off attacking the South Bank end and after Wayne Hennessey had easily gathered a long throw from Phil Neville, Wolves began to dominate possession winning a series of Matt Jarvis corners.  From one of them the ball was headed out to Guedioura who sidestepped his marker and hit a terrific shot that hit a defender and bounced behind for another flag-kick.  In the seventh minute another Jarvis corner found the head of Fletcher but Leon Osman was there to clear from in front of the line. Jarvis beat Tony Hibbert in a chase to the by-line but no-one was able to get a touch on the ball after the winger had pulled it back. Completely against the run of play, Everton moved into a 21st minute lead as Jermaine Beckford headed in a cross from Osman. Just over a minute later Guedioura was inches away from levelling matters. The midfielder took a short pass from Jarvis and curled a shot just the wrong side of the far post.  But it took a tremendous flying save from Hennessey to keep out another Beckford header after Osman again supplied the centre.  A well placed angled effort from Jamie O'Hara looked to be heading inside the far post until it hit the head of Sylvain Distin and flew behind.  A brief scramble followed Jarvis's corner with first Fletcher and then Ebanks-Blake having close range efforts blocked by Phil Jagielka and Osman respectively.  Everton went two up in the 39th minute following a Leighton Baines free-kick from near the left-hand corner flag. Baines' kick hit George Elokobi and looked to be going in until Hennessey got across to claw the ball away.  But Beckford rolled the ball into the path of Neville who unleashed a tremendous effort that flew into the opposite side of the goal.  A minute later Beckford beat the offside trap but Hennessey managed to divert the ball behind with an outstretched foot. The visitors kept up the pressure and a misunderstanding between O'Hara and Elokobi gave possession to Diniyar Bilyaletdinov who sprinted towards goal before unleashing a shot from 22-yards that left Hennessey with no chance.

Half-Time: Wolves 0 Everton 3

Hamstring victim Ebanks-Blake was replaced by Michael Kightly at the start of the new half.  A Guedioura free-kick bounced to safety off the wall and shortly afterwards Bilyaletdinov was shown the yellow card following a late tackle on the Algerian.  Following a O'Hara free-kick, Jarvis drove in a cross that appeared to hit Hibbert's arm. But the referee waved play on as Everton man had little chance of avoiding the ball and he had also turned away.  On the hour mark Karl Henry drew a fine save from Tim Howard who had to dive full length to push the skipper's long range effort around the post.  Distin was close to finding his own net as he attempted to clear a Jarvis cross as Wanderers looked in vain for a foothold in the game.  Both sides made changes with Milijaš coming on for Guedioura whilst Beckford didn't look too happy as he came off to be replaced by Apostolos Vellios for the visitors.  In the 77th minute Osman dispossessed Henry and tried to work a shooting position for himself but Christophe Berra got back to play the ball off the Everton man and behind for a goal-kick. Bilyaletdinov had two chances in a few seconds to increase the Mersersider team's lead after a low cross from Victor Anichebe. The Russian shanked his first attempt and when the ball came down kindly for him he blazed it over the bar.

Saturday 02 April Newcastle  United 4 (Nolan 22, Ameobi 45, Lovenkrands 50, Gutierrez 90+3) Wolves 1 (Ebanks-Blake 58)

Is Stephen Fletcher's real name Elliott - what another miss.  A poor performance again against a poor team drops us down again to 19th.  Awful defending and poor finishing.  Should Nolan have been sent off, maybe but George should have been penalised with a pen earlier.  Only light was the return of Kights.

Three down shortly after the interval, Wolves were left with a mountain to climb at Newcastle but their only reward was a Sylvan Ebanks-Blake strike before an injury time fourth for The Magpies gave the scoreline a flattering look in their favour. As expected there was just the one change to the side that had started against Aston Villa with Ebanks-Blake coming in for the injured Kevin Doyle. Wolves kicked-off defending the end of St James' Park that held the travelling support in its upper tier.  Inside the first minute Wayne Hennessey saved at the feet of Peter Lovenkrands and Steve Harper in the United goal fielded an Ebanks-Blake header.  In the fourth minute George Elokobi was booked for a late challenge on Joey Barton on the halfway line. Barton took the free-kick himself finding Mike Williamson whose header drew a fine diving save from Hennessey.  Nenad Milijaš was yellow carded on 15 minutes after catching Barton who again took the free-kick himself lifting the ball into the box for Kevin Nolan who saw his powerful header plucked out of the air by the agile Hennessey. A clash of heads between Elokobi and Lovenkrands in the Wolves area resulted in treatment for both players but, after a short break in play, were then able to resume. Newcastle moved into a 22nd minute lead when Shola Ameobi headed the ball into the path of Nolan who sprinted between Kevin Foley and Richard Stearman before poking the ball past the advancing Hennessey. Shortly afterwards a Barton corner caused a scramble in the box and it was several seconds before the ball was eventually cleared by the Wanderers defence. A lofted pass into the box from Stearman found Matt Jarvis but Danny Simpson managed to block the winger's angled attempt at the expense of a corner. Jamie O'Hara's flag-kick was half cleared and, when the ball was returned to the danger area, Jarvis hit a low cross that was deflected into Harper's arms by a defender. On the half-hour mark Mick McCarthy moved to a 4-4-2 formation from 4-3-3 when he swapped Milijaš for Steven Fletcher. Ebanks-Blake squeezed between Williamson and Danny Simpson but the home duo got back to deny the striker before he could get his shot away. Christophe Berra appeared to be caught in the face by Ameobi and the normally placid Scot reacted angrily when he got to his feet. The referee eventually called over both captains - Karl Henry and Nolan - apparently to tell them to calm their men down.  In the 43rd minute Adam Hammill broke clear on the right and his path to goal was clear before he was pulled back by Nolan who was perhaps lucky just to be shown the yellow card.  Just on half time Ameobi doubled Newcastle's advantage as he headed Lovenkrands centre past Hennessey. The keeper managed to push the ball onto the post but it bounced into the net.

Half-Time: Newcastle 2 Wolves 0

Twice in the opening minute after the break, Newcastle could have gone further ahead. Hennessey did brilliantly to block when Barton looked odds on to score before Lovenkrands hit the outside of the near post from the tightest of angles - virtually on the by-line. But the respite for Wolves was brief as Lovenkrands made it three with a simple goal after he connected with Barton's low centre in the 50th minute.  Jonas Gutierrez was booked for a tackle on Foley and then Michael Kightly went on for his first senior football since November, 2009, when he replaced Hamill.  Danny Guthrie fouled Berra on the edge of the Newcastle 'D' but O'Hara's free-kick was too high to trouble Harper.  But the Geordie keeper was beaten in the 58th minute as Ebanks-Blake tucked away Jarvis's precision pull back.  Just two minutes later Fletcher was inches away from a second but his header from O'Hara's deep free-kick from the left went just the wrong side of the post. Substitute James Perch joined the list in the referee's book after he had fouled Kightly.  In the 72nd minute a corner from Jarvis was met by the head of Elokobi and a goal looked certain until Perch popped up to head off the line. With the minutes ticking away Stephen Ward went on in place of Elokobi.  Wolves continued to press and Jarvis curled a shot narrowly over the angle before a Kightly drive was deflected behind for a corner.  Jarvis's kick was cleared upfield and Gutierrez broke away and buried a low shot into the far corner to give the final scoreline something of an unjustified look as far as Wolves were concerned.

Unused subs: Campbell, Krul, Tavernier, Kuqi. Bookings: Nolan (43 - foul), Gutierrez (53 - foul), Perch (62 - foul), Ranger (68 - foul), Ameobi (88 - preventing free-kick from being taken).

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew:
"It was a great day for us - there were some great performances in particular from Shola Ameobi and Joey Barton.  Wolves did threaten in the second half and we had to see that period out.  "Seven points is a lot for teams in the relegation zone to make up. One win and couple of draws be enough for us."
Wolves boss Mick McCarthy:
"Newcastle are not a team who are an easy touch. You don't come up here as Wolves and expect to beat them just because we've had a bit of momentum and have been playing well.  "Does a team that has been in the bottom three as long as we have suddenly become a great team that is going to play well every week? As much as we'd like to, no it doesn't.  "We'll regroup on Monday and get ready for Everton and we'll be better.  It's a bad day in the office and we'll smart for a couple of days but we've got to crack on and get ready for the next one."
